UPDATED STORY: Police end University of Utah student pro-Palestine rally with riot gear and 17 arrests

Days before Lauren McCluskey was killed, the officer assigned to her case showed off the explicit photos of her — evidence in her extortion case — to a male co-worker and bragged about getting to look at them whenever he wanted.
They allege that campus police could have prevented their daughter’s murder — and that the school’s president was irresponsible in insisting otherwise.
The angels stood quietly while protesters yelled “pedophile” and “groomer” and pushed signs quoting the Book of Mormon toward their faces.
“You’re going against God,” one man spat. Another told them to “stop protecting the homos” at BYU.
UPDATED: A Utah student with Down syndrome was left out of a photo of her school’s cheerleading squad
“Morgyn is very intelligent,” the girl's sister told
@sltrib
. “She knew what happened. She was sad, and she was hurt.”
I have determined the definitively best mascot for an SLC MLB team...
The Cutthroats.
It sounds scary to opponents. And it's a great nod to native Utah trout! Plus, think of how cool the uniforms would be.

@Ut_Wildlife
? How do we make this happen?
The angel costumes worn by allies at an LGBTQ event for BYU students Saturday had the same type of wings that blocked anti-gay protesters during the 1999 trial for Matthew Shepard’s killers in Wyoming.

I find it deeply troubling that a Utah lawmaker said he "would love to label The Salt Lake Tribune as a vexatious requester" for asking for PUBLIC records.
Regardless of whether someone finds records requests annoying, they are necessary to hold public officials accountable.
A lot of people have been asking about
@UUtah
using the Utes name for sports teams.
Here's a new piece from Luke Duncan, chairman of the tribe's business committee. He says the school has "our full support" to continue using the name respectfully.
My editor has decided to take this story out from behind the paywall!
We want students to be able to read this & feel it's a public service piece!
So give this a click:
Their Utah Co. school removed all pride flags. These LGBTQ+ kids are fighting back.
BREAKING: The police chief at Utah State University has resigned in the face of intense scrutiny for comments he made about sexual assault to the football team that became public this week.
Sen. Kamala Harris has arrived in Utah, where she’ll take a quick tour of the state and then spend the next few days preparing to square off in the vice presidential debate here.
I covered her visit to This is the Place Heritage Park today.
The library
@BYU
is named for a man who wouldn't allow his granddaughter to be “engaged to a colored boy"
The law school is for a man who wanted blood from Black donors segregated
The chem bldg is for a man who called Black rights “communist deception"
Rep. Kera Birkeland, the state lawmaker who wrote Utah's anti-trans athlete bill, appears to have violated the provisions of her measure.
On Wednesday, she revealed protected info about the decisions made in trans girls' cases before state commission.
In case you were wondering what
@UTStateCapitol
thinks of reporters ...
... this is where they push the snow plow piles. 🙃
Photos from the Trib's Rick Egan.
The Ute Tribe’s kids have been failed by the public school system more so than any other students in Utah.
Read that again.
Today — after a year of work —
@sltrib
has published my work looking at these massive inequities. It's called "Failing the Utes."
Here’s the crowd’s reaction when Commissioner Tanner Ainge declared he wouldn’t support so many people in the boardroom not social distancing. He made a motion to adjourn and hear the proposal another day.
“This is the exact opposite of what we need to be doing,” Ainge said.
THREAD: For months, I’ve been reporting for this article —requesting records, interviewing former staff + talking to students kind enough to trust me w/ their stories.
What came from that is this dive into
@UUtah
’s police dept. showing a sexist culture.
She’s 13, transgender and stopped swimming because of Utah’s law against athletes like her.
Grateful this young athlete was willing to share her story with me. And take a look at
@Tenhogs
's stunning photos.
He adds: “We had hoped to have an adult conversation with the University of Utah … regrettably, the administration has chosen a path of defensiveness, denial and no accountability."
Utah school board member Natalie Cline questioned a high school athlete’s gender.
The girl's school district is now providing extra security for her because of the firestorm that has followed.
Responding to frequent COVID-19 outbreaks, some Utah high schools ended up closing and reopening and closing so many times that students were out of the classroom and learning online for more than 40% of fall semester.
The teacher told students they weren't body-shamed @ homecoming — and compared it to him telling his wife what outfits look bad on her.
“If saying that a dress doesn’t look right on someone is body-shaming, then I’ve been body-shaming my wife for years."
How much is spent on DEI administration at Utah’s public colleges and universities?
I broke down the numbers.
The big takeaway: It's less than half of a percent of the operating budget at any public institution of higher education in the state.
The news conference ends. Here's one last statement from Jill McCluskey on the police rushing her daughter to fill out a statement and ignoring her concerns about harassment and possible domestic violence ...
“They were minimizing her and trying to get her to go away."
A Utah substitute told 5th graders that ‘homosexuality is wrong.' She was escorted out of school after 3 students spoke up.
Father
@LouisVanAmstel
applauded kids for stepping up, but “it’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible" what the sub said to his son.
@sltrib
This one broke my heart. I wrote an obituary of Kris Irvin, one of the coolest people I've ever had the opportunity to know.
Kris was a quirky queer Latter-day Saint who challenged the faith to be more accepting of transgender members.
Ciera Galbraith, a BYU senior who is bisexual, said she came out last week because she thought it was safe. “Now people are scared. People are really sacred.”
UPDATED: Utah schools reject Gov. Cox’s claim that they require employees to sign ‘diversity statements’
@SchottHappens
and I dug into examples that Cox's office provided (and searched college websites). But they don't align with what the guv first said.
Two Black men were once lynched in Salt Lake City: Thomas Coleman in 1866 and William "Sam Joe" Harvey in 1883.
This is what we know about their stories.
🧵 (TW: Thread includes details of racist violence.)
Gov. Spencer Cox signed Utah's anti-DEI bill.
Many of the prohibitions in it are things the governor has previously heralded while in office ...
-diversity trainings for staff
-signing statements on inclusion
-scholarships for students of color
Utah doctors and nurses say they were not prepared for what they saw when they walked into New York hospitals last week.
“It’s awful. It’s just awful," said Dixie Harris, an Intermountain physician.
She paused: “I didn’t know it was this awful.”
Lemiley Lane, one of the few Native American students at Bountiful High, was so happy that she cried when she found out she’d no longer be graduating as a “Brave.”
“I just got so emotional,” she said. “We got our voice heard. They finally understood us.”
Students are doing a “die-in” now where they’re lying on the ground in silence.
One student started reading “The Family Proclamation” in the quiet. And the group immediately drowned him out with shouts of “gay rights!”
FULL STORY: Two of Utah’s largest universities — the University of Utah and Utah State — will require students who attend classes in person to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
UPDATED: UVU becomes 4th public college in Utah to require students get the COVID-19 vaccine.
It's the largest university in the state with 41,000 students.
Here are some of the signs. A lot of them also include church scriptures. And the group is using BYU’s slogan, but changing it to say: “Rise and shout — the queers are out!”
I've spent years reporting on Utah's trans sports law, including on the commission formed, athletes impacted.
During this legislative session, Utah's House speaker mischaracterized my work + accused me of writing something I did not.
I'm glad
@laurengustus
is speaking up.

@LaurenGustus
: Even as it’s increasingly difficult for us to report on how Utah lawmakers are serving the people who elected them, I would put this year’s coverage up against any in recent memory. 1/5
Even after 6 years, it’s still exciting to have a story on the front page of
@sltrib
.
I worked so hard on this piece about the 1st football team in Hildale — once a stronghold of the polygamous FLDS. And it has incredible photos from
@trenthead
.
Check it out online tomorrow!
