I was taught in undergrad that science operates in a separate sphere from our socioeconomic contexts. As I learn about capitalism’s reach, I realize how untrue this is. From research to (individualized) healthcare, science has also been shaped by wider capitalist interests.

Went to a 5 star hotel for family dinner. Couldn’t find a place in any restaurant. Checked price at one of the restaurants. Was shocked to find that Buffet was Rs 5000 per head. Fully packed and several people were waiting. None of them was elite. Are we a poor country!

Today our maid started crying cause she had no roti for her kids, she has 5 kids and she used to eat from dastarkhuwan sponsored by a foundation near our place. Due to Eid that dastarkhuwan got discontinued for 6 days till Eid ends.

From experience: the “public libraries” that exist in Karachi aren’t anywhere close to the libraries in Toronto. From the types of books they hold, the services they provide, & how accessible they are — many times, you genuinely need libgen/online free resources to find books.

For instance, teaching only the Malthusian “population control” theory in my evolutionary biology course and not exploring the socioeconomic contexts of resource hoarding by wealthy elite, is not some “random choice”. At a Canadian institution, this is deliberate.

Wealthy countries were once considering waiving all of Ukraine’s debts, yet now are giving bare minimum charity in response to the flood crises in Pakistan. True climate justice would include forgiving all of Pakistan’s debt to imperialist orgs like the IMF & World Bank.

Sanctions deprive Syrians of medicine, produce, & industrial supplies needed for rebuilding. Recognizing their role in bleeding the Syrian economy is not excusing corruption. Limiting the devastating effects of sanctions to just “access to aid”, as Salma is doing, is harmful.

Those pushing the false narrative that sanctions are depriving Syria of international aid won’t tell you that WHO’s office in Syria had a budget of ~ $115 million which was spent on bribing government officials and whats left was focused on Damascus only, not other parts of Syria

The class divide in medicine was something I understood existed but didn’t fully grasp until I got in myself. While my peers are planning fun vacations for future holidays, I already feel like I can’t breathe with the debt I’m about to take on & I haven’t even paid my tuition yet

In South Asia, honour killings are endemic to Hindu communities too; thus, painting it as exclusively rooted in ‘abrahamic’ religions is erroneous. Honour killings stem from patriarchal views on women’s sexuality/familial roles, & yes, can be reinforced by religious institutions.

Been hearing ppl say that MAID is a "result of a broken system". Wanted to emphasize that this isn't the case: capitalist systems have never been designed to improve the lives of the impoverished. Thus, encouraging suicide is in-line with a system built on violent exploitation.

This is an incredibly reductive & insensitive understanding of mental health. Pharmaceutical companies, driven by profit, often hinder the care/treatment provided for mental health issues, but that doesn’t mean the alternative is immediately “exercise/diet”, esp for 80% of cases.

Once, I told my dr I was feeling dizzy/exhausted all the time & wanted a blood test - he said I was “just tired bc of uni” & didn’t order one. Went to another doc for the test; it turned out my iron lvls were so low I needed infusions. 🫶🏼
