This is actually quite scary and I would really encourage people to consider doing what @MForstater called "levelling up"- take a brave step and voice your thoughts by sharing articles online, emailing your MP and signing petitions, speaking to people you know. Don't be silent.

This poor 19 year old lad "has recently broadened his horizons" and wants to date men. Goes on TV dating show. Presenter says "We've got a lovely man for you" and brings him to his date who is... a woman with short hair. In front of the world. Cruel and humiliating.

Finally: lots of news reports that are taken perfectly seriously are collections of anecdotes just like this- especially #MeToo style reporting on sexual abuses. Drink spiking, 'sex for rent', 'stealthing', non-consensual choking- all reported in similar ways in recent years

Similarly, the existence of sites like r/detrans and increasing numbers of high profile detransitioners doesn't tell us how common detransition is, but it does demonstrate that people are certainly wrong to say it is a "fairy story" (thanks Deirdre McCloskey)

Exploratory work like this is useful. It lets us know about phenomena we might want to investigate more formally if we want more info. Using exploratory research, we can say 'this sometimes happens', but we can't reliably say more than that.
