Our report on childcare policy is out today!
We're arguing that childcare policy suffers from a major problem: nobody is really clear about what it's actually for.

🖊️NEW CIVITAS REPORT🖊️
Back to basics: what is childcare policy for?👶🧩
This report, foreworded by
@miriam_cates
, argues that in order to improve childcare policy in the UK, we first need to go back to basics and agree on what it is that it’s actually trying to achieve.
Absolutely hate this trend for crass, disgusting and unfunny birthday cards. Who even sends these? I would be genuinely upset to receive something like this on my birthday from someone who supposedly liked me. Instant ick.
I’ve written for the
@Telegraph
on the latest case of a women’s sporting competition being won by a male. It’s the obvious take on it, but I think it’s important that newspaper columns respond with the obvious take again and again each time this happens:
For the last 5 years I've been semi-convinced that my work isn't PhD standard and I'm at risk of being found out- what a relief that it is now TOO LATE for that as I have passed my viva 🥳
Imagine you're a female college student (maybe even a 'busty' one) and this is your professor. How would this make you feel? Would you feel that your intellectual contributions were valued in this class or that you're seen as the equal of your male classmates?

Road Dahl absolutely murdered by 21st century safetyism. Anything vivid, shocking, exciting has to be watered down and made insipid. A fundamental lack of trust of the reader- we can't mention guns or hair-pulling even in a negative way in case it puts ideas in your head
📚 Hundreds of changes have been made to the original text of Roald Dahl's books after sensitivity readers were hired to scrutinise the text with words such as 'fat' removed
Having a C section: an experience only a woman can have
Being no longer fertile because you're post-menopausal: an experience only a woman can have
Not having a uterus any more because you had a hysterectomy: and experience only a woman can have
Happy to help!
Any male person who seeks to lead a rape crisis centre when the job was advertised for women only is prioritising their own validation over the needs of service users and is therefore unsuitable for the role. As a service user I'd feel gaslit before even entering the door.
Why I'm a monarchist: imagine if the ceremonial head of state was Liz Truss, a person probably almost everyone in the country hadn't heard of five years ago and whom few respect all that much. Arbitrary, sterile, silly. A nation should have gravitas.
The whole crux of 'girl mode' is essentially saying "it is impossible that there is anything more to you than what I imagine you to be". Can you imagine a more privileged or more dehumanising way of looking at another class of people?
Actor Eddie Izzard: "I'm gender fluid... I'm doing stand-up in girl mode... but my dramatic acting is probably going to be in boy mode".

The problem is not gay men having kids. The problem is Owen Jones spending years lecturing women about how it's bigoted to recognise sex but then clearly demonstrating he knows full well what a woman is when he wants something from us.
You can track the passing of the seasons by this natural phenomenon:
Every few months a new male twitter personality will make this _exact_ tweet, ignore all the women in the replies explaining why he's wrong, & usually follow with a tweet complaining that he's getting piled on.
The trans row on here is infinitely depressing. I can’t understand why other people asserting rights or identities compromises or diminishes anyone else’s.
This thread talks about "normalising healthy positive sex". But a healthy attitude to sex involves accepting that it isn't a one-sided service you get on demand, that it requires relationships in which there is mutual desire and respect. "A right to sex" is not healthy.
We should be moving toward a right to sex. People should be able to have sex when they feel they want to, and we need to develop services that meet people’s needs without attaching the baggage of shame or criminalization.
So let’s talk about sex.
I've just written this card to send to Kevin Price & would suggest others do similar. Not only will sending cards and flowers show support to him, but it also shows Clare College that they can't make the problem go away by quietly firing him- people are watching.
RT: Let's fill the porters lodge with flowers for Kevin, as a message to staff and students that love and tolerance can defeat bigotry and hate 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 Kevin Price c/o Porters Lodge, Clare College, Trinity Ln, Cambridge CB2 1TL

Imagine being "deeply upset" not because Target supposedly allows sexual harassment to occur in their stores but because someone talked about it and you don't think that should be allowed
@HJoyceGender
Perfectly illustrates why setting up LGB Alliance was necessary. Stonewall can't claim to represent lesbians when they haven't uttered a peep on the harassment of an academic for expressing her views on what it means to be a lesbian
Didn't get a video but there's a guy outside yelling at the security guards with a megaphone "you don't get paid enough to take the abuse I'm gonna give you" and "if you work here I'm going to abuse you, get used to it"

One thing I hate about this language is the inaccuracy. If you've not had a baby and don't plan to you aren't a 'birthing person'. You don't even know that you're fertile. They claim its about accuracy, but it isn't- it clearly just functions as a dehumanising synonym for women
The obvious take being: it is cheating to bring a male body to a female cycling event, plain and simple, just as it would be to bring a motorbike, and it is a travesty and an insult that this keeps being allowed to happen.
If surgeries like this didn’t exist in real life you could totally invent them as a central aspect of a dystopian horror, set in a world where it’s desirable for women to have their facial features cut off and transformed into a generic mask
Having separate finances from your spouse really puts it in black and white: women pay to have children, and our current social setup expects them to just personally absorb the cost, whether they can afford to or not.
Last month U of Penn told female swimmers to use the university's mental health services 'to cope' with being edged out by a male in their swim team. Now doctors saying that a female patient should be sedated with anti-anxiety meds to 'cope' with a man on a female ward 🤯

'Girl' is not a 'mode' that middle aged males can put on like a coat.
It is the real life childhood of billions of real life people, whose rich experiences and identities are their own, not an empty slate ready to be projected upon by the male imagination.
Unlike prison, lifetime driving bans are free, unarguably a punishment that fits the crime, and unarguably a socially productive response in that they prevent further deaths. We can give out a basically unlimited number of them and should do so much more readily.
Man jumps a red light and mows down 10-year-old schoolgirl while she was cycling home and then leaves her for dead sentenced to 'community order', three figure fine and one year driving ban!
You're a 16 year old girl, your little brother starts saying he's a girl too and that *he wants your name* so you will have to change yours to something else, and your parents AGREE 🤯
This is Norman Bates level creepy, straight out of a psychological horror film
By far the most disconcerting part of having my uterus lifted out of my body during a c-section was knowing for a brief time, JK Rowling no longer considered me a woman.
To lose one crowdfunded judicial review against
@fairplaywomen
over whether sex should be recorded on the census may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose the exact same case *twice*- that looks like an unconscionable waste of taxpayer money and resources.
The ONS wasted over one hundred thousand pounds to fight and lose in court. Its beyond belief that the Scottish Government are now putting Scottish tax payers money at risk. This is a reckless political act and a failure of all the public institutions involved /10
A court in Canada is currently deciding a case in which a ball-owning person has sued 14? beauticians for saying that ball waxing is not a service they provide.
Astonishingly, the twitter account here is the only news outlet covering this case??
? So SG must be compelled to drive to and enter your personal residence, must be compelled to do so by State?
JY - yes State should compel, race/religion/culture is against LGBT
? SG's religious belief's are irrelevant, SG should have to go to your personal residence?
JY - yes
I don't think surgeons should get any points for starting to express doubts after years of reckless experimentation on vulnerable patients, during which critics have been trying to raise the alarm and been silenced. This is going to be a huge scandal, and heads should roll
Two remarkably accomplished experts in the field of gender medicine - a surgeon and a psychologist - display bravery, brilliance & independence in their interviews with me. I think a lot of light was shed, and I'm very proud to publish it on Common Sense.
Textbook example of how men reply to women using their first name on twitter in order to patronise and undermine them. (read the context to see just how misogynist it is in this case!!)
Seen lots of criticisms of this article along the lines that it's based on a small, unrepresentative sample- and responses that this concern is hypocritical if not also applied to small, unrepresentative studies that you happen to agree with. 🧵
And actually, I nearly did just leave it, which I think shows how effective the strategy is. The language and imagery of remembrance makes it very difficult to challenge any of the factual or moral claims that are package up with it, even if the challenge is totally warranted.
Why do I care? Why can't I just do the polite thing and ignore it? I care because people are being misled and this is being used to push anti-feminist policies, such as self-identification of sex, which would be disastrous for women's rights.
Today we remember everyone who has lost their lives to transphobic violence. Labour is committed to trans equality and a society free from hatred and discrimination.
#TDoR2020
Notice the similarity to JK Rowling last summer? If a woman or girl with sufficiently high profile uses it to voice opinions, a flock of men will appear who take pleasure in publicly fantasising about raping her into silence It happens so reliably it's almost like a law of nature
It's said a lot but I am still somewhat stunned we are having to argue this and that I feel stressed sending this tweet. If you'd told me as a little girl that in 2021 a male who visibly has a penis would be competing in the women's Olympic weightlifting I'd have laughed at you.
What's omitted from almost all
#TDoR2020
statements from UK politicians, councils, universities, hospitals & police depts is that the majority of the 350 murders of trans people in 2020 happened in Latin America, mostly Brazil. In the UK there were zero.
Today is Trans Day of Remembrance, a day for us to mark the lives lost to anti-transgender violence. We must all commit to fighting transphobia & anti-trans violence, and to protecting the dignity and safety of every person who identifies as trans or gender nonconforming.
#TDOR
If you want women to have the freedom to associate with other women- and I do- then it’s only fair for men to be allowed the same.
Personally I am fine with there being a handful of member’s clubs that won’t admit me on grounds of sex. Not everything has to be open to everyone!
But I thought he was going to change it from within.....someday.....🫤
Its very simple. If you are a member of the Garrick Club, demand a vote now about letting women in to end this embarassment or resign out of shame you were part of it yourself....

So many people have this arrogant, childish bogeyman view that nazism is something external and other rather than the expression of some universal, deeply ugly human urges that must be resisted everywhere and in all of us, not just condemned in caricatured bad guys

Dylan loves the idea of being able to supply a tampon to a woman in a pinch bc it enables "forced teaming". You owe me gratitude for something intimate & now have less right to boundaries. It's not about being "nice"- otherwise why a tampon and not paracetamol, epipen...
"The bigger problem is that you feel me carrying a tampon around is a threat to you and your womanhood. How is someone doing something nice so repulsive to you?”
@Aella_Girl
Worst: it doesn't even cross their mind to think about lots of things women think about
Best: it doesn't even cross their mind to think about lots of things women think about
Of course, any murder is a tragedy, no less so because it happens in Brazil. However, I find it incredibly disingenuous, not to mention strange, for the Mayor of London to imply that there is an epidemic of fatal transphobic violence in the UK, when this is not the case.
My favourite way to explain how sex is bimodal is to show a totally unrelated picture of a colour gradient and say “see? It’s like that”, in case whoever I was talking to just didn’t know what a gradient was.
@dareiff
@johnroderick
A fun challenge would have been "see if you can figure it out yourself, I'll give you a hint if you're stuck" where the kid was enjoying herself and it took maybe 20 minutes, not SIX HOURS of crying and frustration and just wanting to be helped
@satiricole
Sexual trauma as something scheming, duplicitous women "capitalise on". Honestly, that is the most disgusting, rape-apologist trope and to hear it from a 'feminist' professor is so demoralising.
Really interesting section in the new Sally Rooney book. First time I've seen a novel deal with the complex feelings many women have about their kind, affectionate male friends and lovers watching grim porn.
@MorbidPsych
This reviewer is not only bananas but also categorically wrong. Sex doesn't just "refer to genitals": it's which developmental scheme your entire body follows, and a vital variable in almost any study on animals (including humans, since we are animals)
The gaslightIng of Hubbard's inclusion as a 'badass woman' is a slap in the face to the other weightlifting competitors, to the exceptional female athletes in this video, and to women everywhere
What seems not to have been explicitly stated anywhere is that yes, this article is just a collection of anecdotes- *and that's completely fine*. Qualitative research like this is very useful, as long as you are careful about what conclusions you draw from it.
"The strongest predictor of transgender population across 331 local authorities, as measured by the census, is the % of ppl whose main language is not English."
Astonishing piece showing the very real costs to data integrity when data-collecting orgs are captured by ideologues
Actually, if I was proposing audacious new legislation like self ID, I'd think it was my responsibility to stress-test it by thinking through possible negative consequences. Asking people to do this is not "prejudice", it's not "extreme and hypothetical", it's the bare minimum
This brilliant point from
@OwenJones84
sums up the approach of so many anti-trans activists I encounter on here:
"The nature of prejudice is to seek out the extreme and the hypothetical and use it to tar an entire minority in order to lay the foundations for discrimination".
If I was the head of a sexual violence charity and I made comments that were seen as deeply insensitive and ignorant by thousands of people the charity was supposed to represent, I'd probably resign or at least reflect seriously on feedback, rather than simply doubling down.
Since it also featured this statistic I feel obliged to point out that it is totally baseless- thankfully, because if it was true that would be awful. I don't think it does anyone any favours to share alarming false statistics like this.
It’s like we got bored after all these centuries of being able to walk around without the primal fear of being eaten by bears or wolves so decided to introduce a brand new predatory animal that might tear you limb from limb if you go outside the house
@satiricole
God forbid women's reflections on their own experiences lead them towards their own political opinions. If these clash with the opinions of the listener that means she's "weaponising trauma". Ladies, please only discuss your trauma according to this pre-approved template!
It would be fair to conclude from this survey, in combination with detailed anecdotal reports, that this is a phenomenon that *does happen*- we can rule out the hypothesis that this never happens or happens only to one or two people.
When I asked lesbians to get in touch about their experience on dating apps I was overwhelmed with responses.
@hinge

I'm no fan of cancel culture but I do really believe that proudly and ignorantly declaring your opposition to the most basic women's rights should make a young male MP not electable

Interesting acknowledgement in principle that some pronouns a person could supply are clearly silly and unreasonable. I thought all genders identities, gender expressions and pronouns were supposed to be super valid and should never be undermined
This is actually quite scary and I would really encourage people to consider doing what
@MForstater
called "levelling up"- take a brave step and voice your thoughts by sharing articles online, emailing your MP and signing petitions, speaking to people you know. Don't be silent.

It's so grim, there absolutely is a vindictive pleasure in joking about women whose births don't go to plan. Ha ha ha, you thought your body was yours, you thought you could have boundaries, you were physically and emotionally humiliated and put in your place, serves you right.
This poor 19 year old lad "has recently broadened his horizons" and wants to date men. Goes on TV dating show. Presenter says "We've got a lovely man for you" and brings him to his date who is... a woman with short hair. In front of the world. Cruel and humiliating.
Honestly this is painful.
1. She's a girl, nobody ever shouted "show us your dick" to her.
2. He's gay, but hasn't had the balls yet to act on it, he's using her as a stepping stone.
3. They are a straight couple.
4. Channel 4 should be ashamed.
I'm in today's

, talking about why removing the words "male" and "female" from biology (in favour of "sperm-producing" and "egg-producing") is a bad idea:
@ellegist
A partial answer to this can be making more use of inviting people to go to things with you that you want to do anyway (and vice versa), rather than feeling the need to both set aside an evening to specifically hang out with each other
If your partner leaves her job to look after your children, then your salary isn't just yours, it morally belongs to both of you. If you're married, then it legally as well as morally belongs to both of you. You aren't "paying for her"
Finally: lots of news reports that are taken perfectly seriously are collections of anecdotes just like this- especially
#MeToo
style reporting on sexual abuses. Drink spiking, 'sex for rent', 'stealthing', non-consensual choking- all reported in similar ways in recent years
As a current student myself, the idea of a bunch of self-righteous overprivileged children getting a member of college staff fired over his labour party activism makes me cringe very very hard
@sarahditum
First rule of terfhood: you don't get to say whether you're a terf or not based on 'facts' about 'your own behaviour, opinions or beliefs'. Once a certain number of accusations have been made, the label's stuck on you and you're a terf now, sorry
@boodleoops
A movement that allows males to say "it makes me the worst kind of sad, a sadness you could never understand, if you point out that my bad behaviour is typical of my sex 🥺" could not have been better designed to exploit female socialisation for antifeminist ends
You can check these numbers going back to 2007 on Trans Murder Monitoring:
If you do, you'll see that the chance of being murdered as a trans person in the UK has been consistently below the population average of slightly over one per hundred thousand.
Can you be born in the wrong body?
My latest article for
@unherd
, in which I read a new book on primates and find it disappointingly credulous on gender souls:
One of the most irritating tendencies on the left right now is to insist that certain issues are "not a debate" when this is simply counterfactual- they are current issues of live political debate. You can take part, or not, but you can't simply declare the argument already won
@millihill
@ZeteticEl
I feel like a large reason people go along with all the 'pregnant people' stuff is they implicitly think nobody will _really_ get confused, everybody _really_ knows which sex gets pregnant. Looks like that was overoptimistic 😬
My latest for

Sorry but wtf are they smoking?
"Unaltered males can compete as females. Don't assume they have an advantage simply because they are male" 🥴
Somehow even worse than the evidence-blind fudge we had before based on T levels- at least that conceded that male advantage exists!
NEW - new IOC trans guidelines
1) Remove need for trans women to lower T
2) "No presumption that athletes should have an advantage due to their transgender status"
But 3) sports can restrict athletes if peer-reviewed science shows "disproportionate advantage” exists & for safety

If he's not interested enough in meeting you to be willing to find a day when he is not working and is able to leave the house (??) then not worth your time, creepiness aside
Good move. Showing porn to children is a form of CSA and pornhub knowingly profit from showing porn to children while doing nothing to prevent it. Their business model is literally based on child abuse- not to mention the children (and abused adults) actually featured in videos
High praise for FRANCE who may very soon be blocking Pornhub in the country for violating the law by abusing children as consumers.

Medication that makes the poster appear more female = "bimbo pills". Please recognise this unsubtle, unabashed misogyny for what it is, and please say something
Bit of a blackpill that this is a newly emerged behaviour that most people believe is extremely irritating, and there is no reason at all that anyone *needs* to do it, and yet the consensus seems to be that that’s just the way things are now
Pleased to feature in the latest issue of

We can't free-ride on women anymore, argues

I cannot *believe* the level of narcissism it would take to be in Hubbard's position and think 'yes, this is fair, I earned this'
Similarly, the existence of sites like r/detrans and increasing numbers of high profile detransitioners doesn't tell us how common detransition is, but it does demonstrate that people are certainly wrong to say it is a "fairy story" (thanks Deirdre McCloskey)
Exploratory work like this is useful. It lets us know about phenomena we might want to investigate more formally if we want more info. Using exploratory research, we can say 'this sometimes happens', but we can't reliably say more than that.

@AudreySuffolk
This really bothered me when JKR released her essay in 2020- all the "nuanced" responses saying oh well she's been abused so it's understandable but she's still wrong. Insights women have as a result of abuse aren't incorrect by default!
Female sports are for celebrating extraordinary female sporting talent & performance (red shaded area). The fact that ordinary male athletes show similar results (blue shaded area) does not make setting then against extraordinary females fair
I really feel like public figures who have made a career out of being feminists need to be pressed on whether or not they approve of this, and other similarly stark videos
