We're a grassroots, community organisation committed to spreading awareness of the damage COVID is doing around the world and to combat COVID misinformation.
Queensland Chief Health Officer, Dr John Gerrard, has co-authored an observational study on Long Covid which purports to find that people are no more likely to have ongoing symptoms after COVID than after the flu. Is it true? Let's look at the facts...🧵
Today is International Long Covid Awareness Day. Pandemic Resistance Inc. is committed to recognition of the experiences of those with Long Covid and aim to spread awareness of the risks so that fewer join the ranks of those suffering. We stand with you today, and everyday.
This week we were live at three locations around Brisbane, drawing attention to hospital acquired COVID infection in Queensland hospitals. Everyone deserves safe access to health care. That's why we're launching our Safe Access to Healthcare campaign 1/2
Clean the air, use respirator masks, test regularly, encourage and support people to stay home when sick, get vaccinated for flu and covid. And please, get Queensland a new CHO.
On a day that was supposed to be about raising awareness of the largely hidden suffering of those with LC, the media instead parroted Gerrard’s talking points under inflammatory headlines without even having seen the study, and apparently without much thought at all…
As CHO, Gerrard has pursued a pro-infection strategy, encouraging Queenslanders to get infected in the futile pursuit of building a ‘wall of immunity’. Queensland Health continues to encourage us to wash our hands in response to an airborne virus.
Looking back on Queensland CHO Dr John Gerrard’s statements about C-VID, it is startling how wrong he has been.
His advice has been wildly optimistic and at odds with the emerging science.
Watch to the end to hear what experts think of his views.

The best way to prevent Long Covid is to prevent Covid in the first place. There is no Long Covid, without Covid. New billboard live around Australia this week.
#PreventLongCovid
#LongCovidAwareness
When
@ama_qld
called for masks to be used in Qld hospitals ahead of the latest wave, Gerrard said this would be 'disproportionate'. Then a month later he was apparently surprised when the massive wave inevitably occurred.
"[QLD CHO] Dr John Gerrard said the sudden rise in Covid hospitalisations was unexpected."
Really? Amid a global wave driven by immune-evasive variants, with a large chunk of the QLD population not boosted, and no masks in healthcare?
A child could have predicted this.
Our 4-week billboard campaign is running across Australia this week. Up first, this introduction to long covid. The primer on our website is designed for those just discovering the risk of long & repeat covid. Fight misinformation, spread awareness.
#LongCovidAwareness
They quote the Chief Health Officer of Queensland without noting his inherent conflict of interest. He is directly and personally responsible for public health measures that could control the spread of COVID. There are few to none.
They then excluded another 8-9% from both cohorts with 'unrelated symptoms'. Long Covid has been associated with over 200 symptoms, and they left it up to the participants to self-report if their new condition was related. Were these truly unrelated symptoms?
Participants were surveyed 12 weeks from their PCR test. The WHO definition of Long Covid defines LC as the continuation or development of new symptoms three months after the initial infection. Ergo, the study didn't even look at Long Covid at all.
Gerrard's study found that 16.3% reported ongoing symptoms 12 months out from their infection, with 3.6% reporting moderate to severe functional impairment. Whether from COVID or flu, that’s a massive portion of the population suffering from preventable illness.
The study was conducted by text message, likely excluding some elderly & disadvantaged pts. They did not conduct any physical examinations, medical records reviews, or any other investigations into the participant's health. The study asked the participants just 3 substantive Qs.
It cannot be a stretch to think that a person in such a position could conduct a study with a preconceived result to cast doubt and relieve them of responsibility for the harms directly caused by their decisions.
Australians catch covid much more frequently than they do the flu, meaning its overall impact is more severe. That COVID causes post-viral complications at least as frequently as the flu is a reason to do more to prevent airborne illness, not to dismiss it.
While the study is not yet published, or peer-reviewed, the abstract contains scant detail, and the conference is not until next month, a press release was put out specifically embargoing the story until March 15, which was
#LongCovidAwarenessDay
.
In April 2023, the Qld government announced, with considerable media attention, that vaccination had made long-term COVID symptoms less severe/no more severe than the flu. The study did no such thing, but they got the headlines.
Dr Gerard evidently doesn’t think so given he apparently didn’t declare any conflict of interests to
@ESCMID
. It also seems premature to rush to the media with a definitive conclusion when the study is yet to be presented or published and so cannot be effectively critiqued.
Best week ever for our billboards - seen by 14,000 people across 64 locations. We're halfway through our first national campaign. This week our focus was on the simple steps we can all take to break the chains of transmission - details on our website😉
#InfectionIsNotInevitable
Numerous other studies have found considerable evidence that Covid causes significant harm. Three experts provided commentary on the study, pointing out some of these concerns, but these were drowned out by the sensational headlines.
It’s logical those who were suffering ongoing symptoms were more likely to participate. Relatively low sample size 3,142 of the 19,758 diagnosed over only a 2wk period. Potentially there were patients too sick to engage & some who did not survive their infections. Selection bias.
The study did not identify whether or not the participants had been hospitalised as a result of their infections, nor any other risk factors, pre-existing conditions or individual baselines. Self-reported, survey style studies are inherently problematic.
Seroprevalence studies suggest that 48.9% of Queenslanders had COVID by 18 June 2022. That would mean that around 1/2 of the study participants in the non-covid arm had likely also had covid.
An amazing first week for our national
#LongCovidAwareness
campaign. Our billboard played 635 times, across 35 locations, reaching over 9,000 people. Three more weeks to go. New message debuting Monday.
It will be interesting to see how they controlled for COVID in the non-covid cohorts. By early 2023, seroprevalence indicated 71% had covid in the prior 3-6 mths. It's highly likely that the participants had also had COVID on top of their flu infection.
Now it looks like they've had another go - this time surveying 5,112 patients, 12 months after positive PCR. The only information available is a short conference abstract that does not outline detailed methodology or study limitations.
The author's 2023 study selected 19,758 people who had tested positive via PCR for either COVID or Flu during the period 12-25 June 2022. About 1/3 of them couldn't be contacted via text message, leaving 12,932, of which 26% consented, giving a sample size of 3,420.
And that's a wrap on Week 3. Everyone is at risk of Long Covid, but there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones. A timely message in a week where children with Long Covid made the mainstream news. Our final billboard of this campaign coming soon.
This week we've launched our Safe Access to Healthcare campaign. Head to to let us know how hospitals around Australia are handling covid safety and prevention of hospital acquired covid infections.
As the study has not yet been published, we can’t critique it. It doesn’t appear to be a follow up study as the sample size has increased since 2023. It does look like they may have asked more than 5 questions this time, incl asking about specific symptoms.
Week three of our billboard campaign is active across Australia this week. Everyone is potentially at risk of developing Long Covid, even children. There are simple steps that you can take to protect yourself and those around you.

#WhatAreYouRisking
While there are some therapies available to help manage Long Covid symptoms, doctors don’t yet know how cure it. You don’t want Long Covid.

PS - keep an eye out today in Perth😉
That's a wrap on another amazing week for our national
#LongCovidAwareness
billboards. We rounded out the campaign with a focus on the costs of failing to mitigate covid transmission. We're tallying the stats and will release our final campaign roundup shortly.
We are in the final week of our
#LongCovidAwareness
campaign. After looking at what Long Covid is, how you can prevent it, and the risks to everyone, this week we consider the personal, social, community & economic costs of failing to take action to reduce COVID transmission.
Check out our pinned tweet and head to our website to tell us about your experiences at hospitals around the country. Your responses will help us develop the next stage of our campaign to encourage health care facilities to adequately protect patients, staff and visitors 2/2
Our Long Covid awareness campaign kicked off yesterday with boards active across Australia. With yesterday's focus on
#LongCovidAwarenessDay
& the tests we ran in the lead up, we've already reached over 25,000 people who may not have otherwise engaged with covid-related content
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously contributed to our fundraising campaign. This marks the start of our 4-week national campaign to raise awareness of Long Covid, rolling out nationally from Monday. 80 total artworks, 16 sizes, 250+ test runs, already 11,000 reached.
After trying for 4 weeks to get our billboards playing in Tassie, we've finally succeeded on the second last day of the campaign! 29 plays today at Eastlands.
#LongCovidAwareness
The results are in! A massive thank you to everyone who contributed, whether it was a donation, your time, knowledge, skills, or simply supporting and sharing our efforts across your networks. Let's do it again! Our winter campaign will be announced shortly.
It’s the reverse point to another I made a while back, that stopping yourself becoming infected is not just an individual act. By interrupting chains of transmission, you’re potentially preventing thousands of other infections. Your individual action *is* collective action. /2
We are on rotation today at the cnr of Depot Rd & Braun St, Deagon until 2pm. If you are able to head out and see it, we'd love it if you could post a pic and use the hashtag

At the moment we're trying out different digital boards to test availability, reliability & cost as we build towards our national campaign. This week we were at Deagon, Lawnton and Petrie Terrace. Eventually we hope to be able to tell you ahead of time where you can see them.
We're scheduled to run between 10am-2pm, Sat 17 Feb, at the cnr of Depot Rd & Braun St, Deagon, but we're on rotation with other advertisers so we can't guarantee it will play when you're there. It's also a tri-sided board, so it might play on the sides you're not looking at!
Would you look at that! What did we just say about the costs of covid including health care staff shortages due to the failure to address the spread of airborne illness?
Sorry ACT and Tas - we tried, but we didn't get any plays. NT - you don't have any digital boards we can hire. We also had a board failure in NSW. This is why it’s impossible for us to guarantee that you’ll see a certain billboard at a certain time. We'll try again next week.
