Do I actually want to be a psychiatrist or did I just love the team I worked with, receive constructive feedback, and learn so much about an interesting field?
I feel like this is going to be a monthly problem for me 😅
I was fortunate to present the results of my surgery program director survey at the
@ACOS_MSS
conference. Single accreditation & pass/fail Step 1/Level 1 have changed the landscape of residency applications, especially for DO students applying to surgery. Here's what we found 🧵
I presented an interesting case of a distal interlocking screw retained in a cephalomedullary nail at

We are honored to have Dr. Boockvar, one of the neurosurgeons featured on Netflix's Lenox Hill, joining us as the
@ACOS_MSS
keynote speaker! He is speaking about grit, mindfulness, and handling stress as a surgeon.
That's a wrap on
@ACOS_MSS
at
@TCOM_UNTHSC
. None of it would have been possible without these people right here! They represented our chapter incredibly and put in a tremendous amount of work this past year. Lucky to have them as friends, classmates, and future colleagues 💕
Can't wait to get started!
@SamInScrubs
and I have an amazing team of students behind us– all incredibly dedicated to DO student success in surgery. The future of
@ACOS_MSS
is bright!
What an honor for TCOM
@ACOS_MSS
to be nominated for Most Improved Student Organization at

! We expanded our membership and presence at
@TCOM_UNTHSC
and were selected to host the national conference later this month! So proud of our entire team!
When I first got interested in ortho in college (~8 years ago), it was around 12%! As an applicant, I can see myself (female and a DO) represented in many of the programs & I can't wait to be that role model for someone else. There's work to do but change is definitely happening.
So excited for Chicago! Who else is going?? This year we are really trying to emphasize and encourage opportunities to network with surgeons who are part of the College (per student feedback) so you definitely don't want to miss this conference!
It's time to mark your calendars for the Fall ACOS-MSS Student Conference! The conference will take place on Friday, September 22nd and Saturday, September 23rd at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. Registration is limited, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible!
Got the email that my abstract "Comparison of dominant and non-dominant knee kinetics in healthy controls versus anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction" was accepted for presentation at
@MSOSOrtho
! Can't wait!
We have some pretty exciting news… We had just under 1000 abstracts submitted to our conference! Again, thank you to EVERYONE who submitted an abstract! We look forward to reading them all

Even harder to tell if you're competitive with pass/fail Step 1. Match rate might drop significantly from students over-indexing a connection at a certain program or completing aways at programs we don't yet realize are a "reach." Completely agree good/honest mentors are vital.
Are you even a rotating medical student if your entire phone camera roll isn't filled with random pictures of open fractures, pressure ulcers, incisions, necrotic fingers, x-rays, etc.? 😅
the person sitting next to me on this flight probably thinks I'm going through it but no just crying tears of joy for
@TCOM_UNTHSC
class of 2022! I will never not be a sucker for an envelope opening reaction video lol 😭
Thankful for
@DGlaucomflecken
speaking at

today. Gotta rule out opthalmology because eyeballs are gross and I can't spell opthalmology without spell check 😂

It was so great to see so many students attending the
@ACOS_MSS
board prep panel tonight and asking such good questions. I hope we eased some of your anxiety regarding Step 1/Level 1. Y'all got this! 💪
Check out this thread:
Only 19 out 300+ surgery PD respondents said they won't match a DO student. Majority of PDs of both formerly-AOA accredited and non-AOA programs said they recommend or require DO students to take Step 1 (even if P/F only) & Step 2.
Lots of great research in the Sports Medicine category at
@MSOSOrtho
! Enjoyed presenting my research comparing knee biomechanics in the dominant and non-dominant limb following ACL reconstruction. Looking forward to hearing from residents and program directors next.

Finally, when asked for the most important metrics when determining whom to interview, formerly AOA surgical programs significantly preferred students who audition at their program. Non-AOA surgical programs significantly preferred the MSPE and clerkship grades.
I had the opportunity to be a guest on my classmate's podcast (featuring the cutest dogs!) to chat about pass/fail Step 1 and the result of a surgery program director survey I worked on. Check it out!
Takeaways:
1️⃣ DO students applying to surgical specialties should almost certainly take both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2CK despite pass/fail Step 1 in order to be considered competitive.
My responsibilities as Comm Chair:
- Manage all social media accounts (Yes, I'm responding to my own tweet lol)
- Engage with students, residents, attendings, and other organizations on social media
- Design graphics to advertise events and resources for members (I made this ⬇️)
Reminder: Applications for the ACOS-MSS Exec Board are due by March 10th. Application information is on the ACOS-MSS Facebook page (linked in our bio). Feel free to reach out to current officers with questions! Current officer emails can be found here:

The

Hopped on my classmate's YouTube channel to talk about making the most of 3rd year elective rotations. Check it out and let me know what other advice you'd give! Thanks for having me, Germain!
Great thread! I'd also add that any research is better than no research! Take advantage of every opportunity to conduct quality research even if it's not orthopedic.
Important: Research 📚
When asking orthopedic surgeons about what I could do to stand out as an applicant, most said research
Doing research rotations, presenting at conferences, and publishing are all great things for your application

I am looking forward to the opportunity to learn from these incredible mentors and soak up every bit of advice I can. See you in Vegas!

Conclusion: Despite single accreditation, there are still significant differences between formerly AOA and non-AOA programs and DO students should take these changes into account to improve DO success in the surgical match.

@StudentAOAO
Connect with current residents from your school who matched into ortho in the past 3 years. They can give you the best advice on research, mentors, programs, etc. *specific to your school*. Have a variety of mentors + ≥1 DO mentor. The process is very different as a DO student.

Plus, there will be a huge increase in applicants to competitive specialties. Without a Step 1 score, every 3rd year med student is technically "competitive" and that's when all the subjective measures Dr. Ahmed mentioned will come into play.
Serving as the ACOS-MSS Communications Chair has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in medical school. I can't recommend this organization enough to DO students interested surgery. We have big things planned & are looking for motivated students to join the team.

Voluntary, anonymous Qualtrics survey sent to all program directors in 10 surgical specialties. 19.2% response rate (actually great for these types of surveys, average is about 10%). Of note, we excluded 19 programs which stated they do not interview DOs.

With regards to USMLE Step 2CK, we found that the majority of both formerly AOA and non-AOA surgical programs recommend or require Step 2CK. Interestingly, the majority of formerly AOA surgical programs required it.

I wish they had put a limit on each type (research, volunteer, work, etc.) instead of 10 total. I think applicants will appear less well-rounded because they'll want to list the things that pertain most to the specialty they're applying.

Have a PD or mentor in the field review your application & give you honest feedback. Look at the NRMP's Charting Outcomes in the Match & compare your app to matched applicants. Rotate at a program as a 3rd year (if you can) & ask how you compare to applicants they've interviewed.
