💪It’s all in a days work for our dedicated highway maintenance crews who have been working through this holiday week to clear Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) between Reno and north Lake Tahoe.
It looked like this. Now it looks like this.
Southbound I-580 Washoe Valley NOW OPEN with chain controls thanks to the hard work of our highway maintenance staff. Northbound to open soon.
Take it slow and check road conditions before driving:
Southbound I-580 NOW CLOSED between State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway) in south Reno and Eastlake Boulevard in Washoe Valley due to high winds and ice creating dangerous driving conditions. Northbound I-580 anticipated to close soon.
AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!
Southbound I-580 in Reno was planned to be reduced to one lane through tomorrow morning.
But, crews worked hard to place 6,400 tons of new asphalt to reopen interstate lanes 15 hours AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!
More lane closures coming:
It will be a cold, but rewarding, night for these members of our admin team.
They have volunteered to staff a Mt. Rose Highway closure point, helping drivers avoid the dangerous conditions on the road ahead.
Thanks for helping keep everyone safe!
We were proud to join in important City of Fernley,

Here’s what you need to know:
NOW OPEN! All lanes of SB I-580 through central Reno have just opened after being reduced to one lane all weekend. Crews placed 7,725 tons of new asphalt and reopened interstate lanes 9 hours AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!
More interstate resurfacing work ahead:
We don’t always use snow blowers on valley highways. But, when we do, it’s to make safer highways for you!
Here we are clearing more safe shoulder space on I-580 just south of Reno after plows cleared highway lanes.
We’re digging highways out of last night’s snow.
But wind and snow continue, creating white out conditions, including on sections of I-80 in west Reno.
AVOID TRAVEL this morning if possible.
Highway closures/chain controls:
Can we all just give a BIG SHOUT OUT to our highway maintenance heroes who are working hard to keep highways clear during this major storm? 💪
(No shout outs while driving though- be safe, Nevada!)
Shout out to Chris P. and all our dedicated highway maintenance experts who are working 12-hour shifts through the holiday season to keep you

We’re here to help keep you safe, but remember to only travel if you need to. Road conditions: .
This morning, we LOWERED SPEED LIMITS on I-80 east of Sparks (Mustang-Orchard) to 65mph.
Why? Speed is a top cause of traffic deaths-and crashes at higher speeds are a concern on this growing, narrow corridor.
So, slow down. Make it safety first!
This is Trevor. Alongside fellow equipment mechanic Jesse, he worked through Christmas Day to help keep snow blowers and plows on Mt. Rose Highway running during recent holiday storms.

Following days of blizzard conditions, Mt. Rose Highway is open w/chains required.
👏It’s open thanks to our dedicated highway maintenance team who use expertise to clear the road.
When the highway's closed, they also detonate avalanches to reduce possible natural avalanches.🔽
Crews started removing rock from recent landslide on SR 208.
They'll work 24-hours many days, but several thousand cubic yards of rock must be removed.
We plan to open SR 208 to one-way traffic in future weeks. For now, it's closed Hudson Aurora to SR 339:
One of many reasons I-580 remains closed in Washoe Valley this morning.
Winds remain high, and overturned vehicles are being removed from roadside. That includes high-profile trucks prohibited from traveling the highway during high winds.
Plan for detours.
Wet and snowy roads are now turning to icy roads as colder evening temps set in.
Avoid travel if you can. If you must travel tonight, TAKE IT SLOW. And that includes slowing down to stop and turn at intersections!
