He was still working full time at 82 as a cardiologist at
@Cornell
. He was a gentle and brilliant soul who died like he lived, a doctor through and through.
When patients get described as “VIP”s it insinuates that other patients are not very important people. Since we try to give our very best to everyone I suggest we eradicate term “VIP” from the healthcare dictionary.
To the men of medicine,
Do any of you get letters to “Mr” instead of “Dr”?
Women physicians have this happen so much, not sure if it will make me more or less annoyed if the answer is yes.
My oldest turns 14 tomorrow. She has requested that I MAKE her a cake. Wish me luck, guys 😫. I blocked off 3 hours on my calendar, longer than revision ACL
I’ve done it…. I’ve survived the first year of divorce.
I’m stronger
I’m happier
I’m healthier
I’m a better doctor
I’m a better mom
I’m a better friend
And I’m proud to say I’m even friends with my ex

today I learned the question “where are you from” is defined as a micro aggression in the teacher/student relationship. I understand the intent to protect, But I’m sad about barriers against people getting to know one another. Relationships are a foundation of

My washing machine broke. In a fit of reason I researched the issue, ordered a part, installed it, and it worked. This ortho thing is finally paying off.

Burnout correlates with exposure to “angry public”. My first day back after 6 week medical leave my first 2 patients’ families were so mad at me for being unavailable during my time off. This makes me so sad as I reintegrate into work.

I am a Jew raised on the east coast. Lots of us interrupt by finishing sentences and adding noise while others are talking to denote agreement and support. Turns out this is super annoying to lots of people raised in different cultures. I am working on this 😬😬
Today is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement for the Jewish people. My 9 year old has it a little bit backwards. She is marching around the house demanding a lot of apologies, mostly from her brother.

thurs. knocked out with chills and myalgias. My partners leaned in to take care of my patients. Residents... supportive culture in your partners trumps almost everything else about choosing your first (and any) job as a physician.
My dad was also an orthopaedic surgeon. We had lots of rules in our house. But the one that we knew NEVER to break was:
We were 100% FORBIDDEN from riding motorcycles. Now that I have followed in dad’s ortho footsteps my kids will say the same

9 year old son declared at dinner that a Shirley temple is an excellent drink choice no matter what age you are, and whether you are a boy or a girl or non-binary.

best quote of the day.
Me: here is an ankle brace for your sprained ankle
Camper: my parents will fedex me a better one
Oh, the humility I’m getting delivered 😬
I am awake at night these days worrying about the toxicity of the healthcare environment. When doctors are treated like interchangeable cogs in a wheel bad things happen to patients.

Wow. So sad to read this. I’m a doctor, just doing my best. Sorry for whatever has happened in your life that has prompted you to feel this way. I’m just trying my best, often putting patients before myself and family. Please know we are human too. 😢
After you get vaccinated MASK and SOCIAL distance. One of my partners just tested + for

a month post vaccine. 95% is great but not perfect. It’s not over.
Love that I can walk into the preop area

Male ortho chief resident: May I take my vacation next week on short notice to take care of my 5 month old?
Me: yes. That will be exhausting and awesome
@drnimamehran
: highlight EXHAUSTING
Male surgeons are parents too.
8 year old son: mama, are Canadians usually from Canada?
Me: yes
Him: what about the ones that make you laugh?
Me: do you mean comedians?
Husband: you need to field this
Me: too busy tweeting about it already
Had one of those days in the OR with a fantastic resident. He loves to learn so much, he reminds me why I chose this career so many years ago.

Husband keeps asking Alexa questions but she won’t answer because he is calling her Siri. Kids have been witnessing for quite a while but won’t help him.
No big deal and I’m not bragging at all about my zoom this morning

13 year old daughter yelling with panic: we have a PROBLEM
Me: (ready to call 911) what is the emergency?
Her: my little sister’s face unlocks my iPhone
I have been paired with the same medical assistant for many years. Today he introduced me to his wife
Me: he is the best. I’m so lucky. He is so great to our patients. And he is always on top of everything.
Her (points at him): are we talking about the same man?
🤣🤣
. Glad to hear that
@NaanDerthaal
has been studying to be redeployed as an ICU intern. In all seriousness, he buried some real education in this piece.
I’m putting together a session for physicians about collegiality in placing and receiving consults. It benefits our patients, our partners and us. Who votes for the title to be “don’t be a jack*ss”??
Surgery case order. For me, hardest case on first. Then downhill for all of us the rest of the day. I’m convinced this makes me the best surgeon I can be for all of my patients. Change my mind if you think there’s a better way to go…

My son is writing about me in his school application as a woman in orthopaedics. His main concern is whether to spell it orthopedics or orthopaedics. I use the a ☺️☺️
We have new OR hats. There is some kind of ruffle involved
Me: these new hats are kind of weird
OR charge nurse: everything is kind of weird these days

The women of orthopaedics are celebrating by coming together. There are stories to tell. I wish they were happy. They are not. But we are telling them together. STAY TUNED
I was over a half hour late to clinic today (traffic with fires in LA 😢). My team communicated with my patients and no one was mad at me when I arrived. Everything hinges on a supportive team.

Most important lessons from my time on Maui this week:
1. I’m gong to install an outdoor shower at home
And
2. A short vacation without any work and no kids is more important than I thought it was.
Friend via text: my knee hurts and it’s swollen. Should I get a cortisone shot? My Lyft driver recommended it.
Me: maybe start with an xr? And a doctor? (And by friend I mean family member whom I love dearly)
8 year old son: mom, if you could choose to be president of Nike and make a lot or money or be you and fight to help doctors what would you choose?
Me: help the doctors
Him: good choice. Then they can help other people too.

Obesity in kids is a risk factor for…. EVERYTHING bad in orthopaedics. We need to find the words to help these kids without fat shaming.
