I took 13,017 main belt asteroids and put them into our LSST Solar System survey simulator that my LINCC Frameworks Incubator team is developing. In < 18 minutes the code went through 10 years of simulated LSST observations and figured out which ones would be detected!!!!!!

ComCam is back on @VRubinObs Simonyi telescope. Initial (engineering) on-sky observations are scheduled for July 2024. Though covering <5% of the area of the main camera, ComCam is still sizable: approximately 40' x 40' field of view spread over 9 CCDs and 144 megapixels.

Guess who's back, back again? ComCam's back, tell a friend🎶 Our summit team reinstalled the commissioning camera (ComCam) onto the telescope to continue tests! ComCam isn't taking images right now, but is instead acting as a balancing mass for the telescope during these tests.

Replicating Toomre & Toomre was my science fair project in high school. 10th grade, IIRC. Coded it up in C++ on a DECstation (ULTRIX) at @SrceHr . Mentored by the one and only @DejanVinkovic . Fun times! And guess what: every single figure from that paper reproduced perfectly!

While providing comments to a student, I was reminded that films of the Toomre & Toomre galaxy merger simulations from the 1970s are available online.

We need an automated follow-up observation marketplace. A system where an observation request is submitted and automatically matched to an available resource based on the properties of a request and the "price" (in some form of credits) the requestor is willing to pay and the

After many years of my team's focus on products and algos for Rubin's solar system mission (💪), the time has come to integrate the work into the larger system (💪💪). So I spent a few hours today, figuring out the LSST middleware... This is a visualization of the experience.

@PSETI_Center @Astro_Wright Jason, I respect your work and I'm sure your intentions are good. But to rig a CoC to blacklist a scientist from a conference because of their choice of collaborator seems wrong. It doesn't feel like deterrence of bad behavior, it feels like exacting vengeance on someone (junior)

Partially successful compromise of SSH via xz. It failed because the attacker(s) became impatient and careless. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg. As practiced today, many (most?) OSS projects have a huge cybersecurity problem.

A great article by @SquigglyVolcano in @NatGeo about @VRubinObs and the impact it will have on our understanding of the Solar System. Importantly, Rubin's Solar System discoveries and measurements will be open and available within days. All this (and more) coming next year!

Good example how the lack of discovery (detection) does not imply lack of value (information); can be the opposite! Publish non-detections.

@SquigglyVolcano My guess is this was a "mislinkage". This is when two sightings of two different objects (or a real object + some image processing artifacts) are misidentified as the same one. CNEOS' scout () is a good resource. If you click on 'Observation File
