UK Opera companies, can I please ask you to consider setting up processes to hear singers who might not be on your radar? Singers who do not have agents, are over 40, whose careers have been interrupted. Why is the business of discovering talent only open to young singers?

Spoke to someone from @DWP today and to say it was soul destroying is an understatement. Why does @GOVUK make it harder for people who are already on their knees? The Liverpudlian chap I spoke to was completely incomprehensible and dismissive. I cried as soon as the call ended!

I’m not sure why ACE have an issue with opera. The belief that opera is elitist is entirely ill-informed. Do we think art is elitist, or literature? Dance? Theatre? This working class gal stands up for opera, in ALL it’s wonderful manifestations 🫶🏼

I am so thankful I had a family who, despite being poor, made sure I was given every opportunity to have a career in music. I feel for talented kids who can’t pursue careers due to financial hardship. We must always support and nurture talents from deprived backgrounds.

I wonder if 17 yr old working class Cheryl from a single parent family, with no money, would choose a career in the arts in 2023. Somehow in 1992 it was more feasible, inclusive and viable to have a career as an opera singer. 30 years later and we’ve really regressed. Dire.

If you can’t have a career as a singer without bullying other singers you shouldn’t sing. There’s no room in the arts for bullies. It should be a place to feel free, happy, supported and uplifted when sharing your talents - not put down, anxious, attacked and isolated. Fact.

Well done to everyone involved in @ScottishOpera #Gondoliers It was an INCREDIBLE production with an amazing team. To put together a tour during a pandemic was immense and so many people were responsible for what was an incredible show. We ALL felt safe. Love you all 💗💗

Why oh why are we still punishing the poor in the arts by asking for exorbitant audition/administration fees? We are literally excluding some of our most talented creatives. Those that can pay should and those that can’t should have access to help in order to have a fair chance.

Not tolerating bad behaviour from anyone in my profession anymore. There’s no need for it and quite frankly, I’m way too long in the tooth to put up with bullying personalities. If people can’t be kind and compassionate they’re NOT gonna feature in my next chapter 🫶🏼🫶🏼🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️

The young people who are leaving school this year and about to study music/drama/etc, I wonder what they’re feeling. 32 years ago I embarked on a career that felt full of potential opportunities. These days a career in the arts feels risky and it breaks my heart.

Same spot 39 years apart @StGilesHighKirk Singing on the television with Falkirk Children’s Theatre in 1984 and listening to @creemusic yesterday. My Mum dressed me in bright red for the Christmas recording (with matching ribbons) to make sure I’d be noticed. 🙈
