What it sounds like to find a mega on Foula after too many days of no new migrants and too much rain. Remember kids, profanity is a sign of intelligence.

Absolute joy to find this flock today. Set out aiming to target likely fields knowing there were historical wintering flocks up the road at Port Mulgrave. First stubble field, telling fiance this is habitat we're looking for, lift bins, three birds in view. Magic!
Over a decade since hearing my first
@LDV_NNR
Spotted Crake, I finally saw one of the three singing birds on Bank Island last night. Transmitter attached to understand how they use the area and how long they stay for after the first few days of intense singing.
@YorkBirding
Right when it looked like our first day on Clare Island would end up American passerine free, this beaut showed up in the trees opposite our bnb. Before that it looked like we were settling for a rosefinch.
Feel like I'm in a huge minority, but not at all excited to see the return of Birdfair, especially in its current format that hugely promises unnecessary travel and subsequent carbon emissions. Sad that lessons couldn't be learned.
Couple of brilliant days on
@FI_Obs
, goldcrests, chiffs and robins everywhere. Not a bad supporting cast of Pech, Lancy, Brown shrike, 2 bluetails, stej chat, rt pipit, pallas's warbler, firecrest, etc. Surely as good as birding gets in UK. Pech pic by

First afternoon on Scilly and team find of an absolute beauty of a Pallid Swift over our heads. Actually managed some in focus finders pics.

3!!! Pallid swifts still showing insanely well over Saltwick Bay. Park along track to Whitby Holiday Park and walk. Someone bring me a spare memory card please?!?

Maybe we should start saying well done to people who have resisted the urge to travel for birds, rather than those who do. Might help my willpower somewhat.
Fair to say the Wheldrake collared pratincole is distant, but it's still an
@LDV_NNR
mind blowing mega!

Foula 5-12th October, low on numbers, high on quality, always good scenery. 1 northern harrier, 2 Hornemann's, 4 Greenland redpoll, Grey plover (+little bunt and corncrake I didn't see) - no ybw, no robins seen.
119 dunlin in a single flock along the floodbanks at North Duffield this afternoon. Amazing given we're 30 miles inland. Also a merlin, 11 corn buntings and 140 pf geese.

I generally try and avoid all the hyperbole around a twitch, and how amazing whatever the latest rarity is. BUT the Ross's gull w
is mind-bendingly awesome, undoubtedly one of the best birds I've ever seen.
Weather at Kettleness becoming borderline unbirdable, but the bushes are filling up with goldcrests and chiffchaffs. This rosefinch appeared out of a huge flock of goldfinch and brambling.

Feels like it's been a while since I've been on the East coast for a fall - totally awesome at Whitby today with
@chrisgomersall1
. 2 YBW, 3 Lap Bunts, Ring Ouzel, 2 Short-eared Owls, Jack Snipe and common migrants everywhere. Just brilliant.
13 shorelark in clifftop stubble at Overdale Wyke between Lythe and Goldsborough, Whitby. Maybe easiest accessed walking from Sandsend Quarries although a bit of a trek.
49 species in an hr on North Duffield Carrs this am. Highlights 1 drk scaup, goosander, 5 pf geese, 450 pintail, 174 pochard and a chiffchaff. These snipe showed the full colour range in front of the hide.

This Spotted Crake was singing constantly on Bank Island for at least 90 minutes last night. Easily audible from my garden 0.3 miles away, although we did walk down to get a better recording.
@JABBIRDART
A cold and grey evening on North Duffield Ings was greatly improved by 73 black-tailed godwit dropping in, joining 3 already present, 43 curlew, 20 ruff and seven oystercatcher.
So back home and rested after a phenomenal 8 days at
@FI_Obs
. An incredible list of rare birds seen and a few found (whatever *the warbler* turns out to be). But what will stick with me most is cliffs alive with migrants day after day. Absolutely phonomenal spectacle.
Good days birding. After a slow start with just the Scaup flock at North Duffield, hirundine passage picked up in pm and a call from
@LDV_NNR
resulted in 3rd!!! garden Osprey of the spring, and peaked this evening finding sum plum Slav Grebe at Bank Island
Odd Autumn. High cloud and still overnight. 111 ringed. 45 redwing, 8 blackbirds, 3 song thrush, 34 chiff ( 5 tristis) 12 blackcap, first yellow browsed or Autumn and a Bluethroat.
Walking the local footpaths this morning for an early dotterel. Surprised to see big flocks of corn buntings still, whilst others are singing in territory. 47 in this flock (trust me).

Just had our 500th common scoter flock added to the spreadsheet! Thanks for all the data

people, and if you haven't added your record yet, please do!
Amazing night watching the aurora in the garden when a Spotted Crake started to sing on Bank Island at 1am. First for me in

this spring.

EGRET MIGRATION DAY! Not seen an egret round North Duffield all winter, but today there was 10(!) Little egrets and a Great White. No pics, so here's some other white birds from this evening.
@LDV_NNR
@YorkBirding
Misty sunrises are very nice, but surely we're owed a few rainy mornings with southerlies by now? 2 gw egret left Wheldrake early, plus lrp heard.

Beautiful dusk on the ings. Bewick's swan still at Ellerton with 52 whoopers. Huge roost of gulls, but no sign of Franklins. Peregrine chasing up the lapwing for a last evening meal very evocative.

A few more pics of the Pallid Swifts at Whitby today. I know there's a million other pics of Pallid Swifts out there, but a really exciting find on patch.
First hints of light and we're listening for passerines early out of roost. Please donate generously to our bird race cause, the wonderful wildlife rehabber

North Duffield buzzing with departing redwing as the moon rises. Cut through by water rail screeching. Single distant asio owl sp earlier, probably short-eared.
