During the last round of trollgate, people said that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I’m too ugly. So I’d just like to commemorate the occasion with these 3 selfies... 📸😉👋🏻
Here’s a sample of the nasty comments I’ve received lately. This is why I speak up. This is why I’m writing an ENTIRE book about disabilities. Because people with facial differences are worthy human beings.
I like my smile and I like my face. I just wish society did too... ❤️♿️
I see that Adele is trending because people are saying how gorgeous she is since she lost weight. Y’all, we’ve been over this...
Your weight doesn’t determine your beauty. Your appearance doesn’t determine your beauty. The number on the scale doesn’t make you worthy or unworthy.
When Twitter slides into your DMs to congratulate you on making their “19 of 2019” list, you’re overjoyed.
When this gift shows up on your doorstep weeks later, you’re REALLY overjoyed. And many other giddy emotions!
Thank you so much,
@Twitter
! Great way to end the year!!
Last Saturday, I posted 3 random photos of myself. I’ve spent the last week smiling as I read your messages. Now I want to see YOUR beautiful self! Can we start a huge thread of
#MyBestSelfie
? Share a recent selfie along with a sentence about what you love about yourself. ❤️🥰💋
Why do I post photos of myself? To normalize disability. Maybe if more people saw disabled people, they would see us as actual human beings. Maybe they wouldn’t mock us with horrible names. Just a thought...

I got to write about the TikTok prank for
@Refinery29
today: “Disabled people aren’t here for your ridicule. We’re not punchlines. We’re people. It’s my hope that more people (and platforms, too) join us in this fight. We need you all. Disabled or not.”
I want people to see me. Not for some narcissistic reason, but for a very practical one: Society is never going to change its ableist views unless we normalize disabilities. And for that to happen, people actually need to see disabled people...

Good morning!! I woke up to 26K followers, an interview request from the BBC and an email from a book publisher!!
IS THIS REAL LIFE?? I mean, I know it’s real life because I’ve got an op-ed deadline today, but...wow!!! 🎉🥰💋
📚 I GOT A BOOK DEAL 📚
I’ll be writing my first book “BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE” for
@HachetteUS
— about my favorite things like relationships, pop culture and selfies...all through the lens of disability. It’s the book I wish I had growing up!
What was once just a dream is a reality!
What a powerful moment tonight to hear
@JoeBiden
mention disabilities in his speech. After four years of being mocked (by Trump himself) or ignored, the disability community is being recognized.
Thank you for talking about this on air,
@jaketapper
!!
In honor of yet another troll saying that I shouldn’t post photos of myself, here are TWO cute selfies!! Feeling fine AF right now, y’all...
#MyBestSelfie
😘🔥💋
I signed with a literary agent today!!
For years, people have asked me if I’m going to write a book and I’d always reply “someday.” I’m so excited to share that my book journey to someday officially begins today! Here’s to writing the book I wish I’d had when I was younger... ✍🏻
It’s been another trip around the sun and now I’m 41... ☀️☀️
Had a low-key birthday today! Played Yahtzee, watched a cheesy holiday movie and finished the day with my mom’s classic meatloaf and some sweet presents!
P.S. Meatloaf not pictured because I ate it right away LOL...
Just wanted to thank everyone who let me know that they reported TikTok accounts for using my photo to scare people. We need to normalize seeing people who don’t look like us. We need to teach the next generation that facial differences should be celebrated, not feared or mocked.
Umm, hello, hi, hey!! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
Welcome, new followers!!! This tweet is certainly doing well and I thank you for stopping by! I’m a freelance writer covering relationships, disabilities and pop culture. You can subscribe to my blog if you’re so inclined...
I originally had a different selfie planned for tonight.
But I’m not feeling very happy or smiley right now. This week has been hard and it finally caught up with me.
So I took this photo because we shouldn’t be afraid to show the sad moments too...

😱😴
I recently asked my mom to take photos of me in my wheelchair for Disability Pride Month. I haven’t always been comfortable in my body because I’m not used to seeing people like me, but that’s changing! Disabled body representation is the future and I’m here for it.
Are you?
Totally channeling Selena Gomez with these “Rare” lyrics...
🎶Oh, why don't you recognize I'm so rare?
Didn't you know I'm hard to find?🎶
There aren’t many people with my disability (Freeman–Sheldon syndrome), so I’m rare. Literally!!

OMG, y’all...
@KamalaHarris
@AOC
@sarahcpr
...ME?!?
I’m so beyond honored (and feeling a little unworthy!) to be included in this round-up of women who changed 2020.
The power radiating off this article is FIERCE and I’m here for it. THANK YOU
@shtelchi
...
I went to counseling today (because no shame!) and my therapist perfectly put into words what I’m thinking when I post a selfie...
“This is my face. It’s always going to be my face. And I’m not going to hide it.”
This is my new mantra, y’all...

Never in my entire life have I experienced the kind of bullying that I have in the last 4 years alone.
The fact that this time period corresponds with Trump’s presidency is no coincidence. His rhetoric and his mocking a disabled reporter has normalized this ableist vitriol...
Attention! I’m starting a new tradition: Every time I have an interview that requires a snazzy chic outfit, I’m having my sister snap a photo!!
Here’s the outfit I wore last Thursday! Cool button-down shirt in a pop of pink to accentuate my blushing cheeks!
#MyBestSelfie
(kinda)
So it’s “my body, my choice” when it comes to wearing a mask or getting the vaccine, but NOT when it comes to reproductive rights and women having control over their own bodies...
Completely disgusted by the Texas abortion ban. Once again, I hate it here...
I ordered
@tacobell
for lunch.
Delivery guy: Are you a journalist?
Me: Yes! I used to be a columnist for my hometown paper
Him: Didn’t you recently have a post..?
Wowwww! Recognized by the
@DoorDash
delivery guy bringing me my tacos!!! I guess “stars” really are just like us!
#NewProfilePic
I rarely post photos showing my wheelchair and that makes me a bit sad since my wheelchair is part of me.
That’s why I’ve chosen this photo. The yellow flowers may have swayed me too, but I love how my entire wheelchair is on full display!

I’ve been exhausted all day and it shows in this photo!
This might not be
#MyBestSelfie
, but it’s REAL. Real is beautiful. Real is vulnerability. Real is about telling the world “This. Is. Me.”
I LOVE REAL. And tonight, I really love my super cozy bed. Sweet dreams, friends!
I got this comment last year about how my life would be better if I had a “normal face.” In the last year, I...
✨Signed with a book agent
✨Wrote for The Washington Post
✨Surpassed 100K followers
SPOILER ALERT: I did all that without a “normal face.” My life is pretty good.
Today is the last day of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. We hear about it on the news, but the people we lose aren’t just numbers. They’re people with lives and stories.
This is my father. His name was Brian Blake and he died from suicide in 2003. His life mattered. ❤️❤️
Another photo of a blobfish. Again. Groundbreaking.
Dear trolls: Calling me a blobfish isn’t the big bad insult you think it is. Nice try, though... 😉👍🏻🐟
From now on, whenever trolls ask me “What are you?”... I’ve got the perfect answer...
I’m the author of the forthcoming book BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, which comes out exactly six months from today from
@HachetteBooks
!!
Link in bio to pre-order, friends!!! Stay sassy... 👋🏻😉
And just for fun, here are 5 super random facts about me...
✅ I’m incredibly awkward. I mean, my blog is called So About What I Said, which explains it all.
✅ I can recite all 50 states in alphabetical order. How’s that for a pick-up line? See, I told you I’m awkward AF...
I snapped this selfie tonight and I’m smiling for a very important reason. This election was a huge win for marginalized people who have spent the last four years afraid and feeling like they don’t belong.
We belong. This selfie is for all of us...

While on vacation this summer, my mom was constantly telling me to hurry up because I stopped to take selfies on the streets of Manhattan and basically anywhere we went. Now those photos are part of a viral tweet. Here’s another
#MyBestSelfie
from my Big Apple adventure! 🗽👩🏻🦰📸
So many disabled people have become used to our appearance being mocked, but here’s the thing: This isn’t something we should ever have to get used to.
My hope for a brighter, less ableist future is the reason I continue to be so visible and vocal on social media.
#MyBestSelfie
It’s
#FaceEqualityWeek
, so let’s talk about facial differences! I don’t have a “normal” face & people like me are taught that our faces are shameful. But I refuse to be embarrassed or hide who I am. People like me deserve to BE SEEN. We don’t need to change. Society does. ♿️👊🏻
✅ My dream is to be a co-host on
@TheView
!!
@MeghanMcCain
✅ I also want to be the first disabled
@BacheloretteABC
because it’s shameful that there hasn’t been one yet!! I volunteer as tribute!!
✅ I’m obsessed with bagels — plain, extra cream cheese!!
🎉 MY VIRAL TWEET TURNS ONE 🎉
✅ One year ago today, I posted a tweet that changed my life forever...
✅ One year of self-discovery
✅ One year of life-changing conversations
✅ One year of magic
✅ One year of SELFIES
Thank you for coming on this adventure with me!! ❤️✨
Here’s the thing: When people mock how I look, they’re not just insulting me. They’re insulting all disabled people. We’re constantly told that we’re repulsive and ugly and not good enough to be seen. This is me pushing back against that toxic, ableist narrative!

🎂 Oooh, good Lordy, I’m FORTY... 🎂
Yessss, friends, the big birthday has finally arrived and I’m a bit speechless!! I’m sure I’ll be reflecting later, but for now, I’ll enjoy posing with my birthday balloons like all the cool social media influencers are doing these days! 🎈💝
Thank you SO much for all the love tonight, friends!!!
You know, when that troll wrote “LOOK AT YOU,” I think they were really saying that they want to see more of my pretty face!! So...here I am in all my fierce, tough, disabled, hot glow!!
You’re welcome...

10 years ago, I was hospitalized for depression and I’ve been thinking about the significance of this anniversary all week. Honestly, I was dreading it quite a bit because it seems so monumental.
Here I am during that time. It was hard to smile through so much sadness... 😥💔
My father died from suicide 17 years ago today. There were times I was so angry with the world, but looking at these family photos just makes me miss him right now. I love you so much, Dad. You were the greatest...thank you for everything you taught me. 💔💔💔
If you’re outraged over Trump dropping the F-bomb on the radio, then wait until you hear about the 213K people who have died because of his incompetence...
OK, you asked and I listened. Here’s a selfie I snapped in July! It was a beautifully sunny Midwest day and I was victorious at the DMV, which explains my equally sunny smile and cheerful disposition!

I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be rolling down the virtual runway on September 14th for New York Fashion Week!! Thanks to
@RunwayOfDreams1
, which works to promote inclusion in the fashion industry, I can’t wait for y’all to see the cool clothes from
@ZapposAdaptive
!! 👚👖♿️
Did y’all see the
@chicagotribune
yesterday?? If so, then you probably saw me in my New York Fashion Week outfit. Huge thanks to
@nschoenberg
and
@StaceyWescott1
!! I’m beyond proud of the disability representation we’re seeing right now and honored to be a part of it all... ♿️❤️
This is the very first photo on my camera roll and it’s one that I’ll never delete. It’s fitting because it’s the beginning and where my story began!! My mom was my best friend from day
#1
, so today, on my birthday, I’d just like to say: THANK YOU, MOM. For everything... ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
Recognize this shirt? I had to get a little meta today and wear the shirt I wore in my viral tweet.
I don’t post selfies to be vain. I post selfies to unapologetically take up space and demand to be seen as a disabled woman. In a society that doesn’t want me to...
#MyBestSelfie
I still can’t believe I got to model in New York Fashion Week and wear this awesome outfit from
@ZapposAdaptive
!! Thank you to

Look at this week’s FAN ART FRIDAY, y’all...
Such a beautiful drawing from an artist on Instagram!! She said that she tried to capture my “radiant magic” and I’d say she definitely succeeded — my classic green shirt included. So amazing! 🎨💚
Short hair, I soooo care!
Feeling like a new woman — and literally like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders! Now the only thing that’s wild and unruly is my personality.
And, YES, I got a haircut. Don’t come for me...

If y’all insist on music at your privileged protest, read the lyrics before choosing a song.
"Born in the USA" is about a Vietnam vet coming home & being forgotten by the country he risked his life for. It’s not about how much you’re suffering because you can’t get Starbucks.
Got paid for the op-ed that sparked my viral tweet. If I hadn’t written it, trolls wouldn’t have come for me. So I guess what I’m trying to say is...
THANK YOU, trolls! Laughing all the way to the bank — and still posting photos of myself. Living well really is the best revenge!
I often wonder if my confidence is just me trying to overcompensate for my disability. Am I really comfortable with it? I sometimes look in the mirror and wish I just looked “normal.”
Then I’ll notice my red hair and can’t help but smile a little brighter.

In her confirmation opening statement, Amy Coney Barrett talked about her children’s talents — except the youngest son, who “has Down syndrome and is the unanimous favorite.”
What about his talents? His attributes? Disabled people deserve to be seen for their own merits...
If you’ve ever read my blog, you know how obsessed I am with PEZ dispensers! I have an entire collection and thanks to toy maker Mark, I can add a new one to that collection! My very own...

interview: A sleek black button-up shirt for an effortlessly put-together look! And a thorough blow drying gave my hair extra oomph too! 👩🏻🦰🙌🏻✨
Trump leaving the Rose Garden without taking questions is incredibly symbolic. He’s literally turning his back on the country and it’s all too telling. Again. How much worse do things have to get before we all agree that he’s unfit to lead??
#TrumpPressConference
I’ve officially signed the contract with
@HachetteBooks
for my first book “BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.”
It was extra special to share this moment with my mom and sister. And at our kitchen table, where I’ve written nearly every blog post and op-ed.
Words are escaping me — ironic, I know!
How nice that Jack Nicklaus has “learned to look past” racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism and the deaths of nearly 230K Americans...
And by nice, I mean privileged...
What do we have here? Why, it’s MELISSA BLAKE ON A CAKE... 🎂
My birthday dream has officially come true, friends! Here I am in all my delicious glory — you know it’s a party when you’re on the cake! Huge thanks to my mom
@sharonblake5
and sister for the best birthday ever... 🎉
Sometimes I wonder if I should stop posting so many selfies. But then I’m reminded of our reality in 2020: Women have to fight to be seen and heard. These selfies are for every single woman who continues to fight every day. We demand to be seen and heard.

This sunny surprise arrived all the way from Australia! The wonderful artist Ivy specializes in stained glass creations and made me into a beautiful sun catcher!! Such a thoughtful gift and I can’t thank her enough! Here’s to brighter days ahead and catching all the light... ✨💫
Women are forever being sold an image of “perfect” beauty. We’re taught to be critical about how we look.
As a disabled woman, I’ve lived my entire life chasing those standards.
But perfection doesn’t exist and realizing that has been the most liberating feeling in the world.
Tonight, I’d just like to give a very special shout-out to the person who told me that I could get a “normal” face for $10,000.
Please. My face is priceless. It’s real and it’s spectacular...

I’m seeing some of y’all complaining about how the

If you’re following along at home, we’ve now officially reached the point in American history where Antifa is a “terrorist organization,” but the KKK and Proud Boys are “very fine people.” I’m so disgusted and you should be too...
Yayyyy, I’m officially a badass cartoon character thanks to this week’s fan art from an illustrator on Instagram!! And I absolutely love that I’m standing with my walker!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

🎉My blog turns 11 today so I give you...BLOG ANNIVERSARY SHOOT🎉
People have photo shoots for weddings, engagements, births. Some even have them for their pets. I may not be married or have kids, but that doesn’t make my own milestone any less important & I want to CELEBRATE.
How do I feel tonight? I’m exhausted — both literally and in my soul.
I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s sickening to see how many people were just fine voting for racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism and the needless deaths of 233K Americans...
