12,000 years ago, all of Toronto was covered in a mile-high glacier. Over time, the earth warmed and the glacier began to melt. For centuries, fast-rushing glacial water carved out enormous valleys, leaving Toronto with the largest ravine system of any city in the world.

You *gotta* explore your city. A few years ago, I moved to Toronto. Growing up in the suburbs, coming to Toronto was always exciting—stadiums and skyscrapers, family and festivals—but living here turned out to be pretty dispiriting. Toronto felt like a place without a history.

Many things are meaningful because they are effortful: hand written thank you notes, in-person visits, a home cooked meal. If you make them more efficient (form-filled thank you, Zoom call, Uber Eats), they become less special. Roughly: "If it's frictionless, it's meaningless."

Most of life's work is maintenance. You build something once, but you clean, manage, and repair it for life. Maintenance is the never-ending fight against entropy, and it's masterfully discussed by @STS_News and @RussellProf in their book "The Innovation Delusion".

But as I began to explore by bike & by foot, I realized what makes this city special. It’s a city of ravines, waterways, and urban ecology. The colonial history is just a blip—Toronto's history stretches back to the last ice age and the arrival of humans over 10,000 years ago.

My main takeaway from this summer is this: life becomes more meaningful when you understand the unique history of the place you live. It’s an amazing thing to be rooted in geology & ecology. I felt alienated in my city, but millennia-old ravines & rivers gave me a sense of place.

The past two years, I've participated in @joininteract . Interact is a Fellowship that brings ultra-ambitious, mega-brilliant, super-creative young people from around the world (and, somehow, me) to San Francisco for 3 days. I'm always heckin' inspired by the people I meet there.
