This morning our care team found lioness Zuri with an item in her nest. After closer examination, we found that the object is an incredibly rare lion's egg (Latin name: lyintou). There's only a 0.03% chance that a female lion will produce this hair covered egg in her lifetime!
OTTER PUP RESCUE: An all-paws-on-deck effort is taking place at the Zoo Hospital! An orphaned river otter was taken in by rangers at a Maryland State Park and needed immediate care. The healthy female pup is receiving around-the-clock care from our team:

OTTER PUPDATE: At 2 months old, young river otters are following mom around and tussling with siblings. To help mimic sibling playmates in this professional care setting, we’ve provided the rescued pup we’re caring for at the Zoo hospital with plush otters (1/2)
A very special chick has hatched—one that has been 10 years in the making.
In April, we shared that our longtime northern ground hornbill pair were nesting in a recycled wine barrel. After a decade together, we’re thrilled to share the arrival of North and Blue’s first chick.
One beary sleepy grizzly. 🐻💤
As the weather cools, grizzly bears Nova & Nita are starting to slow down and pack on weight—both signs of preparation for hibernation! The sisters will be viewable intermittently throughout the coming weeks until they fully bed down for winter.
A winter welcome to both snow ❄️ and a new baby 😍 today! Addra gazelle calf Jinx was born last week and has been staying nice and warm in the antelope barn while bonding with mom.
Cute pics & more info:
An adorable duo has arrived at the Zoo! Opossum sisters Moose and Salmon are our newest animal ambassadors, helping to teach guests about their species at Outposts and educational programs around the Zoo.
We’re happy to share the birth of a male blue duiker calf! 2-week-old Indigo, or “Indie” for short, has been bonding with mom Flower behind the scenes.
Blue duikers are a tiny species of antelope about the size of a house cat. Dad Karuka is still viewable in African Journey.
OTTER PUPDATE: Did you know that baby otters need swim lessons? Around 2 months old—the approximate age of the rescued pup we’re caring for at the Zoo hospital—young river otters begin the process of acclimating to life in the water. (1/2)

snacking. The rescued river otter pup we’re caring for at the Zoo hospital has weaned off of formula. Her diet now consists of small pieces of cut-up fish—herring, smelt, and capelin—prepared by our commissary keepers! 🐟
We thought you might need something uplifting in your feed today, so here’s a BABY! A female sitatunga calf was born last week to mother Ally. They have been enjoying the sunshine while spending time bonding in their behind-the-scenes yard.
It’s a springtime baby boom at the Zoo. We’ve recently welcomed Mae the sitatunga, Indigo the blue duiker, multiple prairie dog pups, and two swan cygnets! 😍
It is difficult to put into words the impact Willow the giraffe has had since she was born here in 2017. If you’ve followed us for a while, you know. Our Zoo family is truly broken as we share with you that Willow has passed on. (1/6)
ZOO TO YOU: Dik-diks like Podrick here are tiny antelope. When threatened by a predator, they will whistle through their nose, crying “dik-dik” & flee in a zig-zag pattern!

OTTER PUPDATE: Apples, carrots, and crickets, oh my! We’re beginning to offer the rescued river otter pup new foods at the Zoo hospital. Not only does a diverse diet provide her with well-rounded nutrition, it also enriches her environment. (1/2)
Embracing the unexpected! Warmer temps have allowed the chimps a rare chance to frolic in their snow-covered wonderland. 🌞❄️ It's safe to say they navigated their winter surprise with wide-eyed curiosity. 🐵✨
OTTER PUPDATE: Otterly amazing progress is continuing at the Zoo hospital. When the rescued river otter arrived at just over a month old, she was a tiny pup at only 3.5 lbs. Now approximately 4 months old, she's tripled in size—tipping the scales at a whopping 11 lbs! 🙌

Boop-A-Thon! This week we’ll be flooding your feed with some of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors, who connect with audiences in education programs on and off grounds.
MAISIE UPDATE: Baby chimp Maisie is getting around great on her own, even seen “running” indoors, but is hesitant to climb very high. She still gets bottles from her care team but is trying more solid foods. Though she's a little picky, grapes & romaine lettuce are her favorites.
Hugs for days! In case you missed it, Maisie recently met male chimp Jack, who is 3-year-old Lola's biological father. He continues to show her a lot of affection. 🥰
Who’s a good boy? Each month, our friends at Guiding Eyes For The Blind bring their puppies-in-training to the Zoo to help desensitize the dogs to different locations, sights, and smells. (1/2)
After months of rest during hibernation, grizzly sisters Nova and Nita are beginning to go out on exhibit! The seasonal adjustment is slow, so they are still spending some time in their dens each day.
Happy 10th birthday, Zuri! 🎉 From the observant, dark-eyed cub to the playful, majestic lioness she has become, we thank you for being a part of Zuri’s journey this past decade.
The 3rd endangered African penguin to hatch this season has been named after an Italian food that has a soft and fluffy texture – just like a young chick's feathers! Her name is…
MAISIE MILESTONE: Nest making is a natural behavior for chimpanzees and 2-year-old Maisie has become an excellent nest builder. She's learned this practice by watching some of the other females as they build their nightly nests—good preparation makes for good sleep!
MAISIE UPDATE: Baby chimp Maisie’s relationship with almost 2-year-old Lola has continued to develop, and Lola has become quite attached to the youngest chimp. Maisie sleeps with Lola every night and Lola is very protective of her. She has even tried to carry Maisie on her back!
OTTER PUPDATE: Peekaboo 👀 The rescued river otter pup we're caring for at the Zoo hospital loves to explore, so we have been offering her a variety of enrichment items—like this giant tube!
Rolling right along with our Maryland-themed African penguin chick names, welcome Duckpin (aka Ducky)! He's helping to 'strike' out extinction. 🎳

Oh, wait, that's just adult female chimp Asali showing her playful side with youngsters Maisie and Lola.
Endangered African penguin chicks Chessie and Ripken are learning to swim! Before juveniles enter the main colony, they have swim practice in the penguin nursery to get their sea legs, err, wings. 🐧
We're happy to announce the name of our final endangered African penguin chick this season. She's the only female of five, and already stealing hearts with her adorable waddle and curious eyes. Let's give a warm welcome to Peabody the penguin! 🐧

OTTER PUPDATE: No, you’re not seeing double. That really is 7-month-old Nora with male otter Hudson! This is a significant milestone in Nora's social journey, as she interacts with another river otter for the first time since her rescue. We’re excited to watch their bond grow!
MAISIE UPDATE: Baby chimp Maisie is currently spending time in a social group that includes adult females Bunny & Raven, and their daughters Lola & Violet. This week, the group spent time in the indoor chimp habitat together—it was Maisie’s first time exploring that space! (1/2)

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a member of our Zoo family, especially when the fight has been so extensive. We’re sorry to share that Bud the cheetah was humanely euthanized after his struggle with a gastrointestinal illness that required intensive, specialized care. (1/3)
OTTER PUPDATE: The rescued river otter pup we’re caring for at the Zoo hospital very efficiently dries herself off with a pile of towels we provide her for this natural behavior!
