Most Welsh Twitter storms are overreactions to a nobody saying something stupid. This is different. Erasing Welsh placenames is wrong and should be illegal. It's vandalism on a fragile heritage and culture and the anger is justified.
Last train out of Swansea too full for even guard to fit on. People being offered taxis to get off and let others on. Wales has 5% of UK population and 1% of rail infrastructure spending.
It's taking forever but my map of first-hand accounts of the Welsh Not is taking shape. When it's done, you'll be able to click on the points and read a memory of how the WN was used in that place.
Nationalism is a divisive and dangerous ideology. Now, more than ever, our United Kingdom needs to stay united. Here’s my piece in today’s Western Mail, setting out why we must make the case for progressive British patriotism, with passion and conviction.
After months of a political wrangling, a rare moment of unity in Welsh twitter as everyone joins together in shock on learning that the climate change minister's brother is Aphex Twin.
One major step towards strengthening Cymraeg would be to change student funding. Reintroduce much cheaper fees for Welsh students who stay in Wales. Reduce the financial support for Welsh students who go to English universities. Welsh Government is currently funding a braindrain.
Many people were angry about the 1983 law that required the wearing of seatbelts. As this letters shows, the arguments against them seem silly now. People will get used to 20 mph and perhaps then the oppostion might start campaigning on something that actually matters.
Out in October. This book explores the exclusion of Welsh from C19th schools and the consequences of this for children, communities and the linguistic future of Wales.
The United Kingdom is a state made up of four different nations, each with their own (overlapping) culture. In its very character, the UK is multicultural. If multiculturalism has failed so has the UK.
My 16 year old daughter is voting today. We should be proud that Wales is extending democracy at a time when the UK goverment is seeking to restrict it through introducing voter ID.
In its self-confidence in nationality, heritage, language & diversity, international football is the Wales we'd like to exist. In its economic struggles, lack of direction, unionism, marginalization of Cymraeg & the north, international rugby is the Wales that actually exists.
Very sad to hear of the passing of Chris Williams, one of the foremost historians of Wales. He edited Richard Burton's diaries & published groundbreaking work on the Labour Party & other topics. He had a huge professional & personal influence on a generation of Welsh scholars.
Already Labour figures are blaming minor parties for not standing aside, while not saying anything about Labour standing in Plaid, LibDem, and Green seats. The sense of entitlement....
Whether you want Welsh independence or not, a rise in support for it in Wales can only be good. As Scotland and N Ireland have shown, threatening the union brings concessions and better treatment from Westminster.
Rather than erase his history, the debate around Picton's statute has done wonders to bring his story to people's attention. The fact that so few knew about him before this debate shows how bad statues are at teaching people history.
It's disappointing to see a member of

central committee explaining away Wales' role in Empire by arguing people were following WM orders. If we can't take responsibility for our past, we'll never take responsibility for our future.
And what about the regional list votes?
The Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party is continuing to perform strongly, according to the poll.
It could be on course to take seats in the very institution it wants to close.
A sweet letter from an American girl in 1916 wanting to know what the Welsh flag was and whether she could have one. She knew Wales was a country and did not want a British flag.
Professor

looks at how Wales’ relationship with England has shaped both the nation's development, and how Wales sees itself.

"It may surprise many people to learn that the Welsh, like the Irish, cling to their nationality, are resolved to maintain it, and as nationality, not as a province of England, demand recognition."
Manchester Evening News 1889.
Arfon, Ceredigion, Ynys Mon, Carmarthen E, Dwyfor Meirionnydd vote Plaid. Brecon and Radnor vote LibDem. Everywhere else vote Labour. Protect Wales and keep the Conservatives out.

Watching Michael Sheen on Pointless. My wife appears to be in love with him. She's certainly far happier for him winning than for anything I've ever done.
Welsh Labour blame the UK government for the state Wales is in and act they like can't do anything. The Welsh Conservatives blame the Welsh Government and pretend Westminster has no influence. No one takes responsibility. Then they wonder why people have no faith in politicians.
At the 2021 census, there were only 4 local authority areas in England where no one recorded their main language as Welsh: Darlington, Isles of Scilly, West Devon, and the City of London.
On this day in 1997, Wales voted for devolution and became a democratic political unit for the first time in its long history. The material and economic impacts of this have been limited but the cultural, symbolic and psychological change has been immense.
This video tries to hijack Welsh football to make a case for her bid to be PM & claims the Conservatives represent the country's values. In reality the Canton End at the match shown sang "F*** the Tories".
While I have no problem with the principle of a military museum, a rare green space in a multicultural community that has endured more than a century of racism is not the right place for it. I hope Cardiff council do the right thing and reject the application today.
We've made it into Europe in the football, now let's vote in a way that keeps Wales there in every other sphere. Being an independent football nation won't mean much if we decimate our economy and our culture by supporting Brexit.

collect the Britons evacuated from Wuhan as they arrive in UK at RAF Brize Norton on way to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral where they will be quarantined for 14 days.
For decades the Conservative Party put the interests of business before the interests of the wider population. Now they have given up representing either. Never in modern British history have we been governed so badly.
The chief inspector for schools in Wales complaining in 1898 about how little children know about Welsh history. 125 years later we're still discussing the same issue.
Recording some Welsh history podcasts today. Bite-sized discussions of Wales' past with other historians. Big thanks to the BBC for wanting to increase knowledge of Welsh history.
Today we crown an old man & are a society that can only look backwards for hope. We are asked to pay homage & dissenters are being arrested. The government has abandoned its duty of care towards the young & poor. The coronation is a last gasp of a failing system.
Happy Birthday to my daughter Bethan who is 16 today. She's stuck inside but has made herself a giant cake to celebrate. I would tag her but, like all good teenagers, she's blocked her parents.
Sensing a mood shift in last couple of days. Many soft monarchists (the majority of UK population) are starting to feel the media, cancellations, sycophancy & police actions are over the top. This month could secure the future of the monarchy but it could also damage it fatally.

The Welsh Government has built up a lot of goodwill over Covid but it's in danger of blowing it all with a slow drip of announcements and policy changes that aren't being explained or justified.
As the UK government decides not to devolve its shared prosperity fund, we again see the gap between what it says and what it does. It says it will save the union but is simultaneously taking a hammer to it. You don't fight concerns about centralisation with more centralisation.
