How rude! I finally get a shout out and reporters can’t hear Alexis or take down the quote due to the background interruption. Oh well. Back to celebrating the best Superbowl Sunday ever!
So 354 Nebraska High Schools get to start their extra curricular Winter activities tomorrow.
Not Lancaster County, our City leadership has decided that 14 schools will not be allowed to participate.
No data linking HS sports to spread.
#letthemplay
Another day passes with an empty gym in Lincoln. 350 High Schools prepare for the start of their winter seasons while Lancaster County athletes wonder if they will get the chance to represent their schools with the goal to hang banners! Goals & Activities = Mental Wellness
#LTP
Parents, don’t let your club programs minimize HS summer activities. These are valuable for your child’s development. Leadership, different voices and ideas, new roles and situations, peer relationships, confidence and most importantly fun. These experiences also don’t cost $2K!
It’s been 25 years since I’ve been this emotional vested in an NCAA tournament game!
Go Huskers! Accomplish what I couldn’t get. Let’s get that first NCAA win!

This defensive play puts players at risk. You can’t have an easier block call. Slid underneath, not parallel, late and you would think a 3x All Big Ten player would get protected at some point.
Lincoln Community/Area schools, you either fight this postponement now or wave the flag on a winter season. They have given no specific Covid metrics to return Dec 7. They will then delay until after Xmas. Our athletes and teams are already at a huge disadvantage with delay.
Please relocate Boys and Girls State Basketball as well. Lincoln no longer has the leadership capable of benefiting from the economic positives of High School sports.
UPDATED NSAA State Football Information
Please read the entire press release & stay tuned to the NSAA website next week for more information.
#nebpreps
I am so happy for all our HS students who are involved in a winter activity. Set goals, have fun, lift-up a teammate and cherish the memories!
This decision to return also comes with a responsibility for all us to be leaders in our communities around Covid safety policies.
Hey College Head Coaches, do the game a favor and stop whining and begging officials to go to the monitor every time one of your players gets bumped in the nose. It’s a physical game. Flagrant fouls are easy to spot and the review process to taking away from the game.
To NCAA Committee: looking for a great story line for the play-in games in Dayton? Nebraska winning their first NCAA game would be it. Put them in the dance, they are 1 of the best 68 teams in country.
Parents keep working with your school leadership on pushing this directive from Lancaster County Health Dept.
Starting tomorrow HS students can be full participants in PE class during day but can’t play basketball with same safety measures after school.
#letthemplay
Here are the facts. Lancaster County is 3% lower than the States positivity rate. The majority of our hospital capacity isn’t being utilized by county residents. It’s irrational to punish all of our HS students.
Come on School leaders, fight for your students!
#letthemplay
Incompetent Lancaster County Leadership!
Bureaucratic think-tanks decide to suspend the most controlled and managed activities in our city. Lets punish HS students with no supportive data of spread. What metrics need to be hit to resume on Dec 7th? You have no idea or plan.
Winter sports practices will begin Monday and the
#nebpreps
state football title games will be the following week at Memorial Stadium.
In Lancaster County, those practices will be a no-go. And the
@nsaahome
faces reconsidering its options for the games:
Round two of a
@pinnbank
championship walk with the Markowski’s.
Oh and if you missed this story in January they are a pretty competitive family. Here is that story again...
Please provide the incidence specific to HS sports? A “few clusters” won’t suffice. You can’t view thru myopic lense of positive tests when the mental and emotional health of our adolescents should be number one criteria. FYI Players have been working indoors for several months
Youth sports have moved indoors where risk of spread is much higher than outdoors. Any gathering of 10 or more individuals presents a high likelihood of exposure, so our strategy is to prevent transmission by limiting gatherings of people who could unwittingly infect others.
Here are the Governor’s new DHM’s. Leave HS sports alone. These are controlled/monitored and haven’t been linked to spread. This includes protocols for attendance based on actually COVID metrics not bureaucrat’s feelings.
#letthemplay
I’m not minimizing this virus and understand the importance of protecting our vulnerable populations. Our hospitals are certainly having to shift focus and resources but data doesn’t lie. Thru Nov 9th Nebraska has only increased hospital utilization 4.4% over prior 3 year avg.
Let me explain what this means. This is the warning shot from the NSAA that they can no longer work with Lincoln Leadership. The next move is a multi- year agreement to move State boys and girls basketball to Omaha. This would crush already reeling Lincoln businesses.
Wow! Thanks Metro for a common sense approach to leadership.
@MayorLeirion
Do you see how this works? Allow HS students to maintain their activities & structure while limiting the risk of community spread by limiting fans. The data doesn’t support transfer of Covid in youth.
The Metro Conference — the state's largest conference with 19 high schools in the Omaha area — announced COVID-19 protocols today that will limit attendance to members of a participant's household for sporting events this winter
Positive trend on NE Covid hospitalization data.
11/13 918 Patients
11/20 Peak of 981
11/28 911
This is still in orange category and under 25% of our total statewide bed capacity
For those of you who need data. Our HS students have a 10.6/100,000 chance of being hospitalized.
It would be great to see the data that says tennis is safer than basketball. There has been a basketball tournament in Lincoln/Omaha every weekend since the first week of July. COVID is not being transmitted between youth. All safety protocols have been implemented and proven.
On Tuesday, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird apologized and said her daughter will no longer play tennis while a ban on most youth sports continues in Lancaster County.
Very confusing DHM but Pat Lopez specifically references (13:10) Indoor youth sports being reevaluated prior to original Dec 7th DHM date. This doesn’t appear to be linked into new DHM or December 18th date
Bring back HS sports immediately!
Coaches some club advice. It’s about the kids. Make it a great experience for them. No one cares about your club record or your personal W/L record at Nationals.
Congratulations to Alexis Markowski on being nominated for potential selection to the 2021 McDonald's All American basketball game!! A very prestigious award to be considered for. Proud of you!!
This is why
@MayorLeirion
has a recall out. This shows an incredible lack of judgement. You have all indoor sports suspended in your county including the only county in Nebraska not allowing HS sports and you think it’s acceptable for your child to play in tennis tournament?
Unbelievable! Especially when her quote in the today’s paper was “she and her family can relate to the frustration of no games or practice” while her daughter played today! I will attach her quote
#LetThemPlay
Proud of this group! Started the journey in March and ended with a Top 15 finish in the S40 League. I have a lot young ladies I’m rooting for next winter and into college careers.

Very fair questions by Clark Grell. No one is minimizing Covid. We’re just asking why our HS athletes are carrying the burden of no participation when their peers across the state can play. State hospitalization data is down. Less than 50% of Lincoln patients are from county.
High school basketball in Nebraska begins play this week, but not in Lancaster County. Without hard evidence from local government and health leaders on their decision,
@LJSSportsGrell
suggests more transparency.

Last summer practice for Nebraska HS Lasers before heading to North Tartan Meltdown in Minneapolis and Battle of the Best in Ames, IA. U13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 Gold National teams went a combined 34-9 in first July recruiting period.

Parents, I encourage you to call out this CYA type of leadership. They obviously have no idea how much time & sacrifice our HS kids put into the chance to compete for their schools. A “few clusters” was enough to make a decision that affects our children on so many levels.
While COVID-19 transmission is widespread in the community,
@LNKhealth
has identified clusters of cases associated with youth sports, including volleyball, baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. This includes both school sponsored athletics and private teams.
Thanks
@THEnebpreps
and
@rybread120
for the great article on my family. Basketball has delivered a lot to our family. My wife

In 1999 Rhode Island cost us an NCAA bid when Lamar Odom hit a 3 at buzzer to upset and steal Auto bid in A10. Now they might lose and allow Davidson to take a bid away from NU. I still think NU is right there despite what “experts” say.
Half of Nebraska’s Preseason Top 10 can’t play or practice basketball. Coach Ryan Psota mentions how frustrating it is for the HS athletes when schools 15-20 miles away are allowed to participate.

Just a quick update on State hospitalization data. Trend is still very positive. Down 134 patients from peak on 11/20 of 987. Hopefully, trend continues for front line healthcare workers and hospital staff.
Congrats to Alexis & Grace on recent offer from Nebraska-Omaha. This duo has been fun to coach. Aau teammates since 5th grade. Big things ahead for both of them!
That’s a wrap. Unbelievable summer for this group! Competed against the best programs, became a team, grew as young ladies, laughed, cried, and created friendships for a life time. Best of luck in all your sports in 2018-19.
Great game by Grace Cave 25 points in leading UNO to conference win vs NDSU. Looks to be settling in as lead PG for the Mavericks as a Freshman.
@NELasersHoops
Lessons Learned @ NIKE TOC for 2021 & 23
-10-4 in top division vs great Comp
-If you’re not recruiting our Laser’s you’re missing out on kids that know how to play and win
-A prerequisite to play on the “shoe circuits” is curling up in a zone when they can’t get stops
There were no cluster of COVID cases among the Lancaster Co. HS varsity football teams this fall. No county team was sidelined because of COVID. The 4 games involving county schools canceled because of COVID were because of COVID issues with the opponents, all outside the county.
It appears to be the time for individual highlight videos. This isn’t something I believe in or promote. However, I did spend some time today putting this team one together for my daughters

@JonDolliver
When everyone was saying you “can’t” you and your team said you “can”! Leadership is not always easy and the NSAA deserves recognition for supporting and believing in our schools and HS athletes! Well Done. 👏👏
Notice the Mayor doesn’t list postponement of HS sports on her Tweet. They know there is no data to support decision and did it anyway in the face of Gov Ricketts’s new DHM’s. Once again, what metrics need to be reached to return Dec 7th?
To reduce the spread & relieve the burden on our hospitals and healthcare workers, the local DHM now includes:
➡️Reduced hours in bars & restaurants
➡️Postponement of youth sports
➡️Gatherings capped at 10 people or 25% of capacity
➡️Pedal pubs/party buses may not operate
Multi-sport athlete, small town competitor. Parents made huge sacrifice to drive her to Lincoln for workouts and better competition. Very few get full ride scholarships. Congrats!
When Grace was in 4th grade I asked her what sport she wanted to play "on the side", and she said basketball. Little did I know the impact this decision would make on her life. So, after many visits she made another great decision. GO MAVS! 2021 COMMIT!
Here we go! This Lasers 2023 group is loaded with young talent.

Sometimes leaders have to pull others along. Winning is not easy. I believe it is a skill no different than passing and shooting. MJ understood this and created this culture for the Bulls run in 90’s.
I’m fairly positive limiting 14 HS’s in only Lancaster County while allowing 354 other Nebraska schools to engage in winter sports didn’t move the

. You appear to be well read on Covid data so probably already knew there is minimal spread and risk of hospitalization at HS age.

Wanted to extend a Thank You to Coach Miles. His energy and passion helped energize a program that was in bad shape. He was a few breaks away from getting our program back to what we had in the 90’s. I’m sure he’ll attack the next chapter with the same enthusiasm.
Just an FYI. WWII had over 70 million deaths. Lincoln is currently at 73 which is a .45% mortality rate. State hospital data is trending down over last week. Our healthcare workers have done a great job. They will be the first to tell you to keep kids in schools and activities.
@markowski_andy
Sometimes public health/safety outweigh personal benefits. There is a pandemic going on-listen to local healthcare workers. I’d sure hate to see how you have handled sacrifices during WWII when the public went without lots of things to benefit the fight.
@MayorLeirion
& Dir Pat Lopez
Let’s not overcomplicate this.
-Get Lancaster County back in alignment with new Governor DHMs
-Let our HS students start their winter activities just like their peers in 354 schools across state
-Wait until Dec to set fan restrictions at events
Appreciate
@MasonHAsher
taking time to evaluate 2021 and a few 2023 Nebraska Lasers. Talented group who will only get better each game they play this weekend. It’s long days evaluating in a gym, but the girls appreciate the recognition.

Amazing stat on KU basketball. Only been swept in conference games 3x in 20 years. Our group in 98-99 brought the brooms to Allen Fieldhouse and got it done!
Mens CBB NCAA Tourney needs to expand to 96 teams. Would still be less % of teams than CFB Bowls. Top 32 seeds get byes. Next 32 host at home sites. Final 64 play at neutral sites in traditional NCAA format. Dissolve the NIT.
CSM is getting a winner! In an era where scoring defines players, Clare was willing to do everything else to help her team win. I’m happy her skills were recognized and rewarded. Everyone at CSM will benefit having Clare in the program.
We are so excited to add another GREAT person and player to our

Congrats to all the NE Laser teams that finished the 2017-18 winter season with a championship! 4th Gold, 5th Gold, 5th Purple, 6th Gold, 7th Gold. This was done with over 90% starting soccer, volleyball and softball. True multi-sport philosophy.
This has been the biggest difference since NU joined the Big 10. They no longer get the benefit of the 50/50 calls. They always got the better whistle in the Big 8/12.
