New working paper by @dlmillimet and me: "Fixed Effects and Causal Inference." More data is better, right? Well, not when "more data" means adding more rounds of data to a panel data set, it turns out. 1/

Two schools of thought about what to do with rejection comments: 1) Do nothing, you'll get a different reviewer draw next time, or 2) Fix what you can fix, you might draw (some of) the same reviewers. I went from the former to the latter during my career; it definitely pays off.

This is Maxie. She passed away at 15 in March, long after we adopted her from the Orange County, NC shelter in 2008. She was incredibly smart and fiercely independent and would only want to snuggle when we woke up and before we went to bed. She was my first dog and I miss her.

I taught her during math camp, we realized we lived in the same building, and six months later we were engaged. That was 21 years ago this August. Since then we’ve had three dogs, one child, and we lived in two countries and three states—and I’d do it all over again with her.

One important difference between Econ and Ag Econ—in the former, the fact you got paid as an RA means you are unlikely to be a coauthor. In the latter, probably inspired by the colleges of life sciences Ag Econ depts live in, RAs often become coauthors.

The dissertation topic(s) should only last one until about midway through the tenure track. For tenure at an R1, most departments will want a candidate to have worked on a new research topic by the time they go up for tenure. Hamermesh says to “become an expert on 1.5 topics.”
