If you've been thinking about ordering DOG DAYS OUT, I'd love for you to do it here directly from me. Why? Because if you order on Amazon, I'll get about a quid. If you order from me, I'll get about £8. Payment link here, and books come signed 👇🐾
OMG GUYS. I've been head hunted. It's a digital editor role. It's hybrid working - the dream - and the office isn't far from my home! And, get this, they're going to pay me £22,000 a year! A whole £1,800 LESS than I earned in my starting job in publishing a DECADE ago! 🥂🎉👍
@amymcp_writer
I'll do one of those 🚨 Personal News 🚨 announcements as soon as it's confirmed 😉 Gosh, £22k, what a treat! (In all seriousness, I sent her a very stern and detailed reply about why £22k for any editor role is abhorrent.)
I have found freelance gold:
A client wants to meet me so is paying for me to travel to their offices, holding team building day so we can get to know each other, paying day rate for my attendance + paying for my hotel.
Also, their office is in Mallorca. HASTA LUEGO UK 😎🙌🏻
I have just booked myself in to stay here on Unst, one of the northernmost holiday homes in the UK, set within a lighthouse shore station 😍 to say I cannot wait is an understatement.
#Shetland
Just had a press trip invitation that lays out all the publications already signed up to it, and the publications that have rejected pitches off the back of it. This is GOLD and would love more of this from travel PRs! Makes our jobs as freelancers so much easier 🎉
On Saturday evening my incredible mum passed away. This woman has been a rock to so many people, and was the bravest human I ever knew even throughout her several cancers. Raise your next glass of wine to her, please. 💔
Just finished
@MrAndrewCotter
's audiobook of
#OliveMabelAndMe
. Utterly gorgeous record of his life in dogs, written without a single patronising "pup" or "pooch" in its pages. Dog writing is all too often twee and childish, but this book is perfection.
My mum would have been 59 today. Despite all the rain I made her hike in, she still came with me on every trip she could. It's her final trip today as we bury her ashes in the Midlands near to where she was born. From now, I'll carry her memory with me on all new adventures ❤️
Final morning in Uganda and I'm reflecting on the spectacular
#wildlife
I've seen. It's abundant here, and it's low key. No hordes of safari trucks overlooking lions, no mad dash when the radio crackles with news of a leopard. Uganda is utterly brilliant.
I moved back into my childhood home last year to care for my mum before she died. Not long after she was gone, I decided to stay here. I've done some redecorating to make it feel more "me" and it has done the world of good. I no longer feel like a guest here. This is my place ❤️
I've just had to make an appointment to say goodbye to this one... It's such a weird, horrific thing. He is none the wiser but I am absolutely in pieces. Tonight is our final night together and it will involve all the sausages and cuddles we can muster 💔
This is awful. I booked so many wonderful trips with STA Travel – they were responsible for booking the gap year that led me to this career, actually. Gutted for all their staff.
My mum hasn't had a holiday since she was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago. Since then a shed loada shit has gone down & she's been an absolute rock.
So here we are, on our first post-cancer, post-COVID trip. By 6pm it was all gins & hot tubs. I think it's gonna be alright.
I've been in the Mara for approximately 10 hours and it has already outdone itself several times over. And I have learned how to actually take pictures I don't hate 😱
Almost exactly a year ago I joined the Oxford Vaccine Trial and got jabbed in the arm numerous times. It could have been a placebo, or the Real Thing.
Today, I found out that I got two doses of the AZ vaccine last year and am fully protected 🎊🙌🏻💉
It has been two weeks since mum passed away and I've only just been able to bring myself to open her bedroom door. The moment I did, Arty climbed right onto her bed, exactly where he slept next to her every day for the last two weeks of her life ❤️ Dogs are the best.
18 months ago my mum was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. Today, she got a clean bill of health from the doctors at Oxford's Churchill Hospital.
We had some properly shit times along the way, not least losing her brother to a similar disease, but here we are, doing OK 💜
Finally getting around to finishing The Midnight Library by
@matthaig1
and think this is one of the most astute observations in the whole book 👏🏻 (there's a small dog curled up on my feet as I read right now and frankly, I'd rather be nowhere else)
Ladies and gents, I sent an invoice at 17:34 this evening for a substantial amount of cash. One hour and 15 minutes later, the invoice was paid, and I poured myself a stupendously strong martini 🍸 🎊 💸
Love how much this resonates. I write a newsletter on Substack with another great travel writer all about making money in our industry. You can subscribe here if you like my sass:
I'm in Stoke-on-Trent on assignment for The Telegraph today and this is happening right now. Yes, that's oat infused gin, and yes, I am going to drink it from that lovely handmade mug thank you very much 👍🏼
I have been a writer for eight years and I STILL can't spell bureaucracy. I have to Google it every time.
What word stumps you no matter how many times you write it?
So last night I won Young Travel Writer of the Year at the
@travelmediawrds
🤯 So, massive thanks to
@AndrewPurvis_
for commissioning & editing this winning story
And to
@PetiteBlondine
for this winner, too 🎉
I'm going to the Lake District for the first time in my adult life at the end of this month. Staying in Ullswater. Hit me with your tips for walks/pubs/swims/attractions, travel people ⛰️🏊♀️🐕
Promised my best friend I'd take her on holiday with my first royalty cheque from the book. Thought maybe we'd get a weekend in the Cotswolds or something. But here we are in Seville in a boujie little hotel right by the mushrooms 😍
A huge thanks to everyone who sent gorgeous messages. I had no idea how many people Milo's little face had touched over the last 12 months.
He passed peacefully on Friday, and we had our final night on the Thames in dad's narrowboat with Parma ham and beers 🥰 Rest in peace 🐾
Merriest birthday to my 92-year-old grandmother, who climbed Everest Base Camp at 60 (and was carried down due to altitude sickness) and swam every day in the Devon seas until she could no longer clamber the cliffs. Asked which of her 92 years was best. Her answer? All of them 🎉
It's with the printers!

When I was 18, STA Travel gave me...
🌍 My first solo trip
🇮🇳 My first experiences in India
✈️ The confidence to travel alone
🛳️ A new found love for adventure
📝 A start in travel writing
What a loss for travellers worldwide.

A year ago today my mum slipped away quietly in her hospital bed while my family and I were eating a curry after spending the day by her side. I feel an indescribable sadness at this loss. But also a great fortune that we had so many adventures together. Please indulge me in a 🧵
Oh hello nomination for Young Travel Writer of the Year
@travelmediawrds
😀 🎉 I think this is my second time in this shortlist, so fingers crossed this is my year and that all the others nominated suck. (SPOILER ALERT: they don't suck, which is very annoying for me.)
Had the Ring of Brodgar all to myself yesterday. Quite a special (if incredibly blustery) afternoon. There were seals in the lochs, curlews in the fields, oystercatchers on the shoreline. And just one human and her dog standing with the standing stones, thinking about the past.
Despite saying I never want to write about dogs again after
#DogFriendlyWeekends
, I've just signed the contract on
#dogfriendly
travel book number two! It's a different publisher and a different format, so now I'm looking for your most exciting/unusual dog days out. Hit me up 👇
Almost exactly a year ago my biggest B2B client had to cancel our contract because Covid had decimated their income.
They just called me out of the blue to say they'd like to restart in May 🎊🥂 This is a Good Sign for our industry, and for my mortgage lender 🙌🏻
The Wing and a Prayer installation in Ripon Cathedral is absolutely stunning. 10,000 "angels" hang above the nave. Each has the name of a loved one lost or a key worker who has been a local hero during the pandemic. Very striking and moving.
Deeply excited to be launching A Thing with the fabulous

Often when the house is quiet, I realise that means the dog must be doing something terrible like taking a shit on my pile of clean washing. But sometimes he's actually just staring at himself in the bedroom mirror in the dark. I wonder what he thinks.
Please allow me to introduce my newest member of the family: she's a 3-berth Eriba Familia 310. Almost as old as me but she still feels young at heart and has many, many miles left in her 😍 Can we have some applause for that pop-top please!
#eribatouring
Staying in an Italian hotel in London and last night the restaurant waiter suggested if I can't eat dessert, I should have the tiramisu I missed out on for breakfast. It's 7am the following morning and a tiramisu has just been delivered to my room 🤣☕
The morning after the funeral before. Safe to say we gave my mum the finest send off there could have been, with a bit of Oops Upside Your Head, Gold by Spandau Ballet and Mr Blue Sky played in the chapel 🙌 ❤️
Why having a niche in travel writing is a great business decision: I earned over £800 in 4 hours today because I was writing about my specialist topic. Plus it was an article that the editor came to me with, rather than my pitching it. 🎉
Filed a last min commission for Telegraph Travel. Probably going to frame this bit of feedback (will go nicely alongside my Telegraph reader feedback that from a bloke who said "You're just a lowly travel hack who no one needs.") ☺️
It is REAL now, people.

Wrote a 2,000 word feature for a new-to-me title this month and just had this feedback from the editor and frankly I think I'll take the rest of today off to pat myself on the back 🎊🥂🤣
I just sent my first pitch in MONTHS and it feels so good to have ideas again. 🙌🏻 Feels like my brain has been stagnant with this sedentary lifestyle. I think I'm finding my groove again 🎊
I've been knocked out by post-surgery pain AND norovirus this week and just found THIS in my inbox:
#TalkingTravelWriting
has been nominated for an
@teamIPSE
#IPSEAwards
in the Freelancer Project category! Can't wait to get dolled up with
@worldlyadventur
for the ceremony!
This doesn't look like much to you, but to me, this 1970s serving hatch is where I will watch telly while I'm cooking in my NEW HOME I JUST BOUGHT WHAAATTTTTTTT 😱🏠🔑
My last 24 hours perfect sums up the paradoxes in travel writing: I stayed in a four-star, lux hotel in Knightsbridge last night and had a spectacular afternoon tea there today. Now, I am in a Holiday Inn Express off a busy motorway and had crisps for dinner. 👍
Posted this on Instagram and an ex-boyfriend got in touch to say "you look like you've lost weight 👌"
I haven't lost a kilogram, mate, but I have gained so much muscle I could deadlift you and drop you in the Thames so there's that 🤷♀️🤣💪
For the last 24 hrs, my inbox has been at its busiest since March.
I've also been setting up an *international* press trip for this summer, which seems ludicrous but exciting.
We're on the home straight,
#travel
colleagues! Let's keep people safe with our coverage, please 🙌🏻
She's out! My second
#DogFriendly
travel book is officially on the shelves from today. It's got hundreds of brilliant ideas for things to do with your dog across the UK and Ireland. Find it in your local bookshop or online today 👇
TRAVEL WRITERS who pay their own way and don't rely on comped travel/stays (or at least have done in the past)... I would love to commission you for a
@TTWnewsletter
piece. Please get in touch if you think this might be you!
I finally, properly moved into my late mum's home (my childhood home) this weekend and it feels odd but good to the guardian of this house that contains both mine and my brother's entire lives ❤️ also, there's a fridge just for wine and my huge print of a local hillfort looks 👌
I moved out of London at the beginning of January, and initially it felt like failure. Morning dog walks like this, though, remind me what a damn triumph it was to leave and find the right mental space for me. My mind has never been healthier
There's nothing quite like ending the week with a phone call from a paper to say a piece you wrote has been syndicated and you're going to get some extra £££ 🍻🙌🏻
I am staying in the most ludicrous hotel suite. Two floors, extensive free bar, gigantic bathtub... This is exactly what I was writing about in last week's newsletter: rooms like this are best experienced with somebody. Luckily,
@Stephens_GA
is on her way to help with the gin 🍸
TRAVEL WRITERS: How do you go about finding multiple story ideas for one trip and getting multiple commissions? Something I get asked a lot and while I have thoughts, I would love to gather some tips from other pros!
By the end of this month, I'll have *personally* sold over 1,000 copies of my own book since it was released in May 😱 I can't quite believe that. I'm very keen to know how it's going in the actual bookshops! 🤔
Took my last urine sample to the Oxford Vaccine Centre today and it's confirmed: I'm going to be taking part in the
#covid19
vaccine trials! Took the opportunity to explore some bluebell woods near the hospital with the dog too 🐾 we'll be spending some more time here, it seems!
Read a late-night email from editor last night as "there were quite a few queries on your pieces" and went to sleep feeling a bit shit.
Just re-read email so I could reply and it says "there were *so few* queries on your pieces" 🤦♀️ Damn my subconscious imposter syndrome.
Today
@loveEXPLORING
turns exactly one year old. It's astonishing to me that I was a one-woman team a year ago and now we are a team of three, with loads of brilliant freelancers and over 55,000 users a month. 😀
