Miguel Santiago says he’s “fighting for change” in Council District 14, but he’s backed by executives and the same real estate interests that are responsible for the housing crisis.
🗣️From Palestine to Mexico, all the walls have got to go!🗣️
Our campaign stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian resistance movement fighting back against their oppressors. 🇵🇸

STATEMENT:
Yesterday, the disgraced Kevin De León announced he’s running again against the wishes of the district’s residents. KDL is just one of many racist and corrupt politicians who serve the luxury developers and the rich of LA.
We’re on the ballot in March✊
✅We hit +4,000 doors
✅ Collected 1,400 signatures
✅ First grassroots, socialist campaign to qualify!
Thank you so much to the volunteers who made this possible🌟 Let’s keep the momentum, donate $10 today!
CD14 is the heart of the evictions crisis in

, and LA is the center of the nation crisis.
Honored to be interviewed by

"This campaign is proposing an alternative to the Democratic party, to all of these politicians who have failed us time and time again [...] we cannot trust them any longer and the alternative is a working class, socialist candidate." -

“The difference between Kevin de Leon and Lalo Vargas couldn’t be more stark. While one has been fomenting racial division in order to line his pockets, the other has been building solidarity and organization in neighboring communities and LA as a whole.”

WATCH:
This district can’t take another KDL or his buddies in the Democratic Party. Each race, we’re told to vote for a new Democrat- that this time it’ll be different and things will get better.
CD14 is tired of waiting. It’s time for a working class socialist fighter in City Council.
Resistance to apartheid is not a crime!🚨
We are disappointed in the feeble attempts by progressive forces across Los Angeles to parrot racist lies against Palestine and fail to acknowledge the US empire’s historic use of false propaganda to manufacture consent for war.
🧵 This Wednesday,
#LACityCouncil
voted unanimously to mandate air conditioning in all rental units. This motion reveals the power that City Council has to better the lives of working families - but more often than not, City Council prioritizes the interests of the rich.
My name is Eduardo Ezequiel Vargas, but my family calls me "Lalo". I'm a public school teacher, a tenant organizer, and a proud socialist. For decades we've elected career politicians, and all we’ve gotten in return is corruption, racism, and betrayal in our city council.
🚨ACT NOW TO SAVE THE BLOCK🚨
The Tiao Corporation seeks to build a luxury development in Cesar Chavez Ave in Boyle Heights and displace its many longstanding tenants and residents.
On Thursday,
@UNITEHERE11
and the LA community shut down the streets of LAX, the tourist capital of the country to demand the right for housing through a livable wage! ✊
Lalo for CD-14 is a grassroots campaign, ran and funded by working people like you. We aren't backed by big businesses like the establishment candidates and career politicians.
We need your help to launch our people-centered, socialist campaign!
🧵 In the first few days of Pride month, the
#LASD
aggression at the WeHo Pride festival and a right-wing rally at an elementary school in North Hollywood fueled bigotry and hatred against our local LGBTQ+ communities.
"We are the epicenter of the housing crisis with one of the largest proportions of evictions.
A city as wealthy as LA has all of the resources to house everybody but do not because of a lack of leadership from the working class themselves"
WATCH:
¡Save Brooklyn Ave, Stop the Tiao Project!🚨
We need your help to stop this massive luxury development that would kick out dozens of longstanding tenants of Boyle Heights.
➡️ Join us on 12/13 at Ramona Hall Community Center for the public hearing!
❗️Endorsement alert❗️
A fierce advocate for working families in Boyle Heights, Jonathan Echavarría is the president of the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council which serves the neighborhood's 85,000+ residents.
The Capitalist Class has two political parties that don't represent the working class. It's time for Workers to have their own Party and run their own Candidates ✊🏼

Join us to build a city for working families. We’ll be in:

His policies have proven disastrous for working families of the district. Under his leadership, CD14 has become the epicenter of the evictions crisis. Rents, homelessness, and hunger have skyrocketed meanwhile the rich have only gotten richer.
The imperialist occupation of Palestine and all oppressed nations of the world mirror the daily reality communities in Los Angeles as they resist the plague of poverty and violent police brutality.
End all U.S. aid to Israel,
#Palestine
will be free!✊

LA’s Council District 14 is currently represented by Councilmember Kevin de León, who hasn’t yet filed for re-election. Seven of the candidates lining up to take his seat have agreed to appear at LA Forward Institute’s CD-14 virtual candidate forum.

Tenants in Los Angeles need AC units, but we also need a permanent ban on evictions that the City Council has the power to implement. As your council member, I would fight to ensure that housing is treated as a human right in every aspect.
As a tenant organizer, I know the strength and resilience that tenants hold in their collective power to demand better living conditions. By building a tenant mvmt across LA, we pressure local elected officials to enact renter protections, rent control, right to counsel, and more
That’s why I’m running- because CD-14 needs a tenant organizer, not a career politician in City Council✊
We can’t compete with the big money candidates without you! Donate $20 today!
It’s critical that we show out and make our voices heard in support of our friends, family, and LGBTQ+ community.
Join me this Sunday as we carry the legacy of the Fight Back movement - when we organize, we win!

We’re so excited to show the district why we need a socialist in City Council!

One major theme was how quickly our local and federal governments sponsor militarization and violence, instead of funding people’s needs. ➡️ Did you know that the state of California spends $609 million each year on military weapons to Israel?

CD-14 has the highest number of evictions in Los Angeles. This city does not protect our housing rights and leaves tenants and families to fend for themselves. 🧵⤵️
NEW DATA TRANSPARENCY TOOL 🚨
CITY OF LA EVICTION NOTICES MAP & ANALYSIS
From Feb to July 2023, 39,677 eviction notices were filed in the City of LA. We hope this map & analysis informs policy makers & the public about our City’s housing/eviction crisis.
TODAY at 5PM we're screening FOUR candidates running for LA City Council District 14 for the

Mi nombre es Eduardo Ezequiel Vargas, pero mi familia me dice "Lalo". Soy maestro de escuela pública, organizador de sindicato de inquilinos, y soy orgullosamente socialista.
Budgets do more than reflect our values - they materially affect the conditions of working people who tangibly feel the impact of where our money is going every day. [Continued]
Public safety is achievable only once we prioritize meeting the needs of our most oppressed communities instead of endlessly criminalizing poverty and stripping back public resources. [End thread]
If a proclaimed progressive cannot stand for justice in Palestine, how can they possibly stand for justice for poor and oppressed people here in Los Angeles?
#votesocialist
@MayorOfLA
Police do not prevent crime.
Investments into social programs, housing, healthcare, education, and long-term community enrichment prevent crime.
Racist fearmongering and smearing of the Palestinian struggle will not stop our campaign from standing w/Palestine. When the African National Congress took up arms against the South African apartheid regime, US politicians labeled them as “terrorists”.
#HurricaneHilary
is the direct result of the climate crisis. From
#MauiFires
#CanadaFires
to the floodings in CA this year to the record-breaking heat waves across the world, these are not natural disasters.
This development would rip the cultural and economic fabric of Boyle Heights, opening more parts to gentrification and displacement of its historic community. The commercial and residential tenants of this block stand united against this project.
Our fight for a People’s budget in LA City Council is inextricably linked with Palestinian liberation- fund people’s needs, not the war machine!✊
#FreePalestine
The
@latimes
broke news today that
#LACityCouncil
Curren Price is facing federal charges.
My campaign stands in direct opposition to the Council’s insistence on operating within the status quo.

A quarter of our city budget is spent towards a department notorious for its violent malpractice, widespread corruption, and blatant racism against our black and brown communities.
[Continued]
The billions being poured into the LAPD must be spent instead on providing concrete solutions to the housing crisis, improving a crumbling education system, revitalizing public transportation - things that working class families actually need. [Cont.]
The US govt wants to fund more wars while a third of our childcare centers are set to shut down and hundreds of thousands remain unhoused on the streets!

We also call for administrative officials at Saticoy Elementary School to condemn the hate crime committed against a transgender teacher whose Pride flag was burned in his office.
We condemn these attacks against activists, youth, and community members facing a rise in violent actions and rhetoric. Over 540 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in legislatures across the country targeting our rights& liberties, particularly of transgender individuals.
As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and an organizer for the democratic rights of all oppressed peoples, I pledge to continue fighting the fear mongering and hateful tactics of right-wing supremacists.
🗣️We call on all CD14 candidates to oppose this project!
Join us at the Public Hearing Meeting to make a public comment in opposition!

The hotel industry is one of many sectors in which we see how immense wealth is distributed to the very few while the workers who make it all possible scrap by.
"My

officials are exploring the availability of emergency shelter locations for 1000s of unhoused people, but we fear these efforts are too little too late. We demand the immediate opening of all public buildings for emergency shelter— including all empty hotel and motel units.
We call for a thorough investigation and disciplinary action into the LA Sheriff's Department for the aggressive use of violence in the arrests of volunteers at WeHo Pride on Sunday June 4th.
We also call out mainstream media’s lies and manipulation. Those same networks and spokespersons who lied about the war in Iraq are lying about Palestine and the plight of the people of Gaza.
