It’s October - year 5 of
#31DaysOfFemaleHorror
! Every day I’ll share a dark/spooky book by a female or NB writer. Day 1: my feminist horror stories, Things We Say in the Dark, 99p all month! It’s been broadcast on radio, optioned for TV, and performed in an abandoned cinema 🖤
My wife has just been challenged for being in the “wrong” (female) toilet. This never used to happen to her.
I want to say to “gender critical” people:
You are damaging trans people, and that’s bad enough.
BUT YOU ARE ALSO DAMAGING THE PEOPLE YOU CLAIM TO BE PROTECTING.
If your salaried job entails paying freelancers’ invoices, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make sure those invoices are paid before you bugger off on your Christmas break. This is the most expensive time of the year for us, we did that work for a reason, please pay us on time
I can’t stop staring at this bizarre photo. Drinking from an empty cup. A blanket with her own face on it. Tortilla wraps masquerading as pancakes. Mouthwash beside the bed.
When people are confronted and questioned in toilets, they’re then trapped in a small space with someone acting aggressively towards them. My wife is a strong woman but even she feels intimidated by this. STOP IT. STOP IT NOW.
As you can see, my wife is a butch babe. She’s been butch-presenting for many years, but says it’s only very recently that these challenges have started. It’s making her anxious and it’s getting worse. No fucking joke, she wears this badge now.
Have now sent four reminders for a payment I’ve been owed since the end of January

And to those just joining the thread: please don’t feel you have to engage with bigots if you don’t want to. We can just let their questions (which, p.s., have already been answered several times) sit there and stink like the farts they are
Well, it’s been fun arguing with TERFs (haha no it’s hasn’t), but I have actual work to do today so I’m muting this thread now. Thank you for the many messages of support ❤️
Here she is! My book of feminist horror stories, out Halloween 2019. This is the hardest thing I ever wrote (and, I hope, the best) and I’m so proud to share it with you!
I don’t know why folk bother with flat earth conspiracy theories when it’s blatantly obvious that harpy eagles and sun bears are all just men in costumes
Can Londoners please stop writing books/films where other Londoners go to Scotland because it’s “far away” and “empty”, to “get away from it all”, “be alone”, “be far from everything”, “be in silence with nothing else”. SCOTLAND HAS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE jesus effing christ
My wife and I have been working on a new project: Baby Bennett-Logan, due in September!
This is the first and last update/picture I’ll share here. Not because I don’t want to, but - (1/3)
And she's out! My witchy, queer, medieval novel is officially published. I started this book 6 years ago and a lot (like a LOT) has happened since then, so it's a great feeling to be on the next step of the journey with Lux, Else, the mummers, and the rest of the medieval weirdos
Shout-out to the 3 men I was on an Angela Carter panel with who spent the whole event lamenting that Carter was shockingly unappreciated in her lifetime, then when asked which contemporary female writers they read, couldn’t name a single one (including me, sitting beside them) 🙃
Just got an acceptance for a story that's been rejected nine times. Keep sending those stories out! (Also: publishing a book doesn't mean you'll never get your work rejected again. The hustle just goes up a step.)
I am 34 today! Five years ago I was an unpublished writer, but on the plus side I had just met a super-badass woman. Today that woman is my wife, and my 4th book is out soon. Roll on the next five years 🖤🎂🥂🎉🖤
UPDATE: Annie and I are kicking off spooky season with the successful (and slightly late) arrival of Baby Bennett-Logan! Just got home from the hospital - mums and baby all doing well ❤️

Any fantasy & sci-fi writers looking for character names, I’m telling you: Scottish towns. Tarbrax. Quothquan. Darvel. Mauchline. Drongan. Eldrick. Ratho. Drumelzier. Elsrickle. Kelso. Altass. Muie. These are all real and, as you can see, absolute solid gold, you’re welcome

Today, getting coffee:
BARISTA: I know you, are you Kirsty?
ME: Y... maybe?
BARISTA: Kirsty Logan?
ME: Y... es? *thinking ‘oh shit what did I do and can I blame someone else’*
BARISTA: I like your books.
ME: 🥰
Pals, I’ve never been ‘recognised’ before. I feel fancy!
Pals today I went to an outdoor heated pool, and I had the pool all to myself, and it rained, and I just floated and let the soft rain fall on me, and then I went for coffee and pastéis de nata with Mama Logan, and then I went to the library and borrowed a big stack of new novels
Today I found my dress for the Things We Say in the Dark launch, and I feel like it’s the right choice because a random woman in the dressing room said “oh you look like you’re in a Tim Burton film!”
If you've ever thought that you would write a book if only you had the time – no one has the time. You have to make the time. Books are written like this, piece by piece, word by word, in the gaps of our days.
7 years ago today I had a first date with a funny, smart, soft butch babe I met online. She says she knew we’d be together the first time she saw me (I took a bit longer to realise, at least an hour). Through many good and bad times - and hairdos - I love her more than ever ❤️
My wife and I took the baby for a walk in the park with our donor and there was a perfect double rainbow arcing right across the sky and of course there’s no such thing ‘a sign’, but if there was, and if it wanted to say all was well with our lil queer family, well there it is
Fuuuuuuuck. I did it. Pals, I have a full first draft of this novel. After 14 months and 100,000 words, I DID IT. IT IS DONE. FUCKIN YAS. Ok now I need a break before the many (many) rounds of edits. BRB going to eat pastries and stare out to sea
Three years today married to the light of my life, the joy in my world: this smart, kind, strong, gorgeous, unexpected, funny woman. Never knew it was possible to love anyone this much.
I’m so happy that I can finally tell you: on Halloween 2019,
@HarvillSecker
will be publishing my next book, ‘Things We Say in the Dark’, a collection of dark feminist horror stories 🖤🖤
Infertility and pregnancy are difficult topics for many people, and the last thing I want is to cause those feelings in anyone else. So this is the last you’ll hear about it - unless I say otherwise, please assume mums and baby are all doing well! ❤️ (3/3)
Me: I think I wrote something good yesterday!
Also me: Is it shit though
Me: I think it’s good maybe?
Also me: Is it shit though
Me: It’s good! I wrote a good thing! It’s good damn it!
Also me: Iiiiiiiis it shit though

Today’s work space: my favourite table at Langside Library. I’m on my 6th book and I don’t have an office, or even a desk - I write at my kitchen table, in cafes or at the library. I also researched all my books in libraries. Love you,
@GlasgowLib
! ❤️

She feels she needs to wear a badge NOW. She didn’t a year ago. This so-called “debate” is having real-world consequences for both trans and cis women
If you never ended a disappointing house party by listening to some dickhead play Wonderwall/Iris/Hallelujah on acoustic guitar, did you really truly experience the 90s
"Fairy tales and folk tales are darker, stranger, messier and more satisfying than people might remember. They're not just about being pretty or winning princes; they're about loss and betrayal, regret and confusion, joy and fulfilment. They're about us."
These haunting medium format slides with images of an unknown woman walking into the sea were found in a Virginia thrift store by photographer Meagan Abell in 2015.
My 2020 resolutions were:
1. Be at home more.
2. Spend more time with my wife.
3. Do fewer events.
Feel like I’m in a film where a bad genie grants your wishes but in a horrible way
@Leeds_Demon
Sexual assault in prisons is not ok. Unfortunately it mostly happens man-on-man or woman-on-woman (and queer and trans people are more likely to be victims). But yes, we should all be fighting for the rights of prisoners, whether they’re cisgender or transgender

My stepsister makes this incredible jewellery from foraged flowers, mushrooms and poisons. I got this necklace and have had compliments every single time I’ve worn it. If you fancy something witchy, treat yourself:
I'm offering a free mentoring/editing session (worth £150) to a trans/genderqueer/non-binary writer. Writers anywhere in the world can apply. You have until midnight on Sunday 14th April. Please share!
WOW - I am deeply honoured to be among this excellent company! I needed to write Things We Say in the Dark even though I thought no one would want a queer, feminist horror story collection. It means the world to me that my strange little stories have had so much love! 🖤🖤🖤

because it took us several years, including 3 miscarriages and a failed IVF, to get here. In that time, seeing friends’ pregnancy/baby updates was bittersweet: joy for them, pain and frustration that we couldn’t have the same. (2/3)
Ever spotted a writer you like but didn’t want to bother them? SAY HI. For the first time ever, I just got recognised in public by a reader and it absolutely made my day. Thank you so much, stranger (and Gracekeepers fan) in the yellow coat. You cheered me right up ❤️
Hey remember a year ago when a big fancy Hollywood company optioned Things We Say in the Dark for TV? They renewed the option for another year. It’s a distant dream - but a TV show of creepy fruit babies, abandoned theme parks and women wearing dollhouses still a possibility! 🤞🏻
Am I sad because it’s raining or am I sad because of my period or am I sad because I had two big glasses of red wine last night or am I sad because I didn’t write anything today or am I sad because of the moon or something: a memoir
The saddest thing I ever read was that as a child JM Barrie went into his grieving mother’s room; she said ‘is that you?’; he replied ‘no, it’s just me’
Happy spooky season, pals! It’s my favourite time of year, so here’s my favourite thing:

So nervous and excited about this! My memoir is now in the hands of a very few carefully-chosen readers (this one is
@nellstevens
'). I put my whole self into this book and I hope it finds it way in the world
Today I went to a frozen loch so my wife could record me reading a queer reimagining of a Scottish winter goddess myth; now I’m having an afternoon lie-down and reading a book about why women love true crime. Truly living my best and most on-brand life today
Happy 40th birthday to the light of my life, my sparkler in the night, the kindest funniest sweetest smartest person I’ve ever known: my wife, Annie Bennett-Logan ❤️
Order tights from
@SnagTights
and they’ll gift another pair to an NHS frontline worker! I wear a lot of skirts and dresses and trust me, these are the BEST - gorgeous colours, fit all sizes (seriously) and don’t fall down. I have 7 pairs and will never buy another brand ❤️
Five years ago my first book came out, & it was queer & weird, & it won
@PolariPrize
&
@SabotageReviews
awards, & a story was just adapted into a play, & it’s still in print & in bookshops & selling copies. OK that’s it, just wanted to tell you as I forget to be proud sometimes
Horror pals! Your thoughts, please: proofs of my book of feminist horror stories, Things We Say in the Dark, will soon be available. Any horror-loving folk (writers, reviewers, filmmakers, media folk) who you think might like a copy?
6AM taxi chat
Taxi driver: And what do you do?
Me: I’m a writer.
TD: Oh, like Stephen Spielsberg! I love his books.
Me: Stephen King?
TD: Yes, great books. Flowers in the Attic was the best.
Me: Virginia Andrews?
TD (slowly, pityingly): It’s by Stephen Spielsberg.
Me: 😢
My badass queen of a wife got a huge promotion to a new job where she can help even more children with special needs. I am so very proud of her and all her hard work and did I mention she is a fucking QUEEN
❤️❤️❤️
