Anyone struggling with homeschooling should know that, despite having a PhD in Literature and having published 12 books, I only learned what a fronted adverbial was when my 8 year old's teacher said he doesn't use enough of them in his written work.

31 years ago today I learned that my Dad died by suicide. He was 35, I was 13. It was, as you'd expect, the most horrendous Xmas and for years afterwards I absolutely hated this whole season. So, thinking of anyone who is counting the minutes today until it's all over x

My son has Tourette’s. His stomach tics cause him actual pain, doubling him over every 10 seconds, often for hours. The #Glastonbury set by @LewisCapaldi is so important b/c it makes disability visible, & I’m so moved by his courage to stay on that stage and the folk who cheered

Had horrible, skewering anxiety today so turned to writing out of desperation. Managed to lower anxiety from 8 to 4. Realised what it is about writing that aids anxiety - writing is an act of hope. Creating in any form, regardless of medium or genre, is hope in action.

I don't think Twitter is collapsing? It's a valuable resource. For some people it's their only community. I know that, during lockdown, it was massively important, and I think we'll need online communities even more in the future. We need to protect that. I'm not going anywhere.

If you’re a writer at any stage seeking to develop your work, may I urge you to look into @moniackmhor ? I’ve had the most wonderful week teaching here. Students flew in from all over, as it’s incredibly well connected. Such a nurturing place.

Happy Mother's Day to my mum, who had me at 17, raised me alone, dealt w/ all manner of blistering prejudice, poverty & abuse & still managed to provide a shining example of integrity, courage, faith, diligence & love, all whilst keeping me fed, dressed, sheltered, & hopeful.
