MINNIE RIPERTON is my music today, on shuffle, repeat, all of that. She of the five-octave vocal range, and easily one of our greatest singers ever, who does not fully get props she deserves. She died at only 31, is Maya Rudolph’s mom, and left us with stunning music.

When with my mother yesterday she did what she has done since I was a boy, she gave me birthday card with cash in it. Even when I tell my ma I am good, don’t put cash in card, she does it any way. A mother’s love, and this April has been a blessed birthday month. I am grateful.

TODAY, May 19, is Malcolm X’s 94th birthday. He is my hero, period. He was not perfect, had many issues, but he remains one of the greatest global speakers and leaders ever. Malcolm’s autobiography transformed me forever. He taught me to be honest, to never be afraid to change.

Woke to sad news #AndreHarrell had died, at age 59. Whether coronavirus or not, what I do know is my heart aches at endless death cycle we are in. I knew Andre, since I started writing about music long ago. Last saw him in Feb. 1990s music owes HUGE DEBT to him. Rest, easy, sir.

People who think the attempted takeover of Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021 was aberration, either do not know or understand American history. This is a MUST-READ about a very similar thing that happened in 1863, IN NEW YORK CITY, long before Tulsa.

LIFE. Just two years ago, to be brutally honest, my life hit rock bottom in every way, and I was ready to give up. I will say more and write about it all one day. But I am here to tell you, anyone, if you can just hold on, dig for self-love, miracles do happen. Thankful for life.

Today, August 28, is my mother’s 79th birthday. I love her deeply, will do anything for her, in spite of very complicated relationship going back many years as an only child. She taught me much I keep close, and things that hurt I let go of. She did best she could. HAPPY BDAY MA!

REST IN PEACE AND POWER LOUIS GOSSETT, JR. He was 87, and one of my favorite actors since I was a child. An Oscar winner, I was struck by his performance in “Roots,” for which he won an Emmy. He was a true gentleman, AND one of our giants of theater, film, and tv.
