To put things into perspective, so far students have missed two weeks of learning time. 10days. Parents pull their children out for a 2week holiday all the time & don’t bat an eyelid. Yes, every day matters but let us keep things in perspective when lives are at risk, please. 🦠

I’d finished my 1st year of HOD, done my absolute best in a mess of a department & taught 1/3 of Y11. Walked into school & the first thing that was said to me was ‘We’ll have a meeting about these results’. Rest of holiday? Ruined. If you’re SLT this year, please just THINK. 🙏🏻

When I'm SLT, I will send each staff member a SPECIFIC thank you. I'll remember who took over Y11 groups, who picked up the pieces after agency staff, who did interventions. It's not because these are special things but because they can get you down. So I'll notice& I'll thank 👏

It’s that time of year when many will go for internal jobs. Twice I’ve been rejected internally & going back in the next day is (in my experience) horrible. Like REALLY horrible. So here’s plea to keep an eye out for those people. A 🍫 or 🧃 left on a desk can mean the world ❤️‍🩹

When I was an NQT in July 2015, the school told me OFSTED were imminent. We spent the next 3yrs being told they were coming. I left in July'18 & guess what? 3 years later? Still no visit. I often think about how all-consuming this focus was (& no doubt remains). It's mad.

When we teach about the informal sector, I often suspect that students don’t fully appreciate the significance of it. This graph from @TheEconomist this week will be a helpful addition to slot into #geographyteacher lessons!

I’ve LOVED teaching ‘The Almighty Dollar’ as a topic to our Y7s and their end of topic assessments are just 👌🏻 Some of the knowledge displayed in these poster presentations ( very different to ‘just’ a poster!) is amazing- very proud! 💵🌎🗺

Yes I know it’s not all about exams & answering Qs HOWEVER: if, like me, a big concern is that students will just completely miss the point of the Q, this simple tool does work well. Pick out all the ‘tricky’ wording of the spec & discuss what knowledge to apply #GeographyTeacher

Thank you to whichever fantastic #geographyteacher introduced me to this idea! ‘Backwards description’ task for locating the tropical rainforests 🌱 Building a sense of scale & of course, basic locational knowledge 👌🏻

This is an example of one of my #geographyteacher resources that is used multiple times a year, every year (all Y8, all Y11). A simple yet excellent video giving an overview of river landscapes. What is the equivalent for other topics? 👀 Video:

Sorry- when was the last time these scientists went near a school? What about the fact that 2m apart is simply impossible? What about the fact that attendance PLUMMETED before official closures anyway? What about the MH impacts of feeling more at risk by mixing? Angered by this!

I’m enjoying blowing minds by teaching our Y7s about map projections to end the year- they’re loving it! Using the timeless MappingTheWorld resources of @OxfamEducation . 🌎🗺🤯 #geographyteacher & #primaryrocks lessons & sheets shared here:

This year I have led or supported 21 fieldwork days across 7 schools. My main reflection? It's impossible to nuture a love of fieldwork in both staff or students with the current GCSE assessment. It reduces this rich element of our discipline to hoop jumping & box ticking.

Ladies & gents, sign me up to your pub quiz teams! My brain is brimming with (admittedly, niche) knowledge but you never know, there could be a round on TAs. 🎓👩🏻‍💻🎉
