Hand-knitted woollen Tudor childโ€™s mitten found in Finsbury which in Tudor times was covered by fields. Knitting became popular in the 1500s. It is very rare to find Tudor clothes still surviving today. Search Collections online for more Tudor items:

This month, our #BeforeAfter ๐Ÿ’ซ is dedicated to the garments of Norman Hartnell, Britain's most successful mid-20th century designer. Embroidery was replaced with hand-painted flowers 'after' WWII, due to the labour and materials-intensive nature of this decorative technique.

This is Muriel Matters who chained herself to this grille at the House of Commons in 1908. For this, she was imprisoned. Subsequently she hired an airship emblazoned with 'Votes For Women' and sailed over the House of Commons in 1909, distributing Women's Freedom League leaflets.

This gown was likely worn by Queen Victoria during a royal visit to Paris in August 1855. The silk with its distinctive floral pattern was probably made in France, worn to honour the host country. The blurred effect suggests that the warp of the cloth was printed before weaving.

This moonlit view of Trafalgar Square by Henry Pether (1800-80) is remarkable for its inclusion of street and indoor gas lighting, as well as the lit clock-face of Big Ben. Pether was best known for his moonlight pictures. This is one of several in our collection. #WinterSolstice
