This is something I’m really excited about. I’m launching a substack for serialized fiction—where I’m going to publish episodes of a serialized thriller novel. Just like how Charles Dickens or Alexandre Dumas serialized their novels in the newspaper
here is the clip of Lukas Gage auditioning on zoom for some hack director who didn’t realize he was unmuted, complaining about having to look at poor people’s shitty apartments. look at what aplomb and class Lukas rolls with
in all the BARBIE discourse, i don’t see anyone talking about the female audience. BARBIE is opening to $155+ million!! we are a vastly underserved audience. we’re 51% of the population. the majority male executives think we don’t matter, don’t spend, don’t need to be marketed to
this article says that HBO expressly chose to cast non-stars from the beginning cuz they knew in success they would create stars. this is *so important.* nowadays we are told we can only cast A-list. the point is: the writing is the star. they were right!
never forget the time a writer in the Sons of Anarchy writers room jumped down my throat cuz i said Bill Maher was an unfunny hack whose politics suck and who only fucks hookers and then it turned out she was like best friends with him and my enemy for the rest of time
@corn65badboy
this happened to me too — in a post office — and a stranger witnessed it as well and went with me to the police station to report it. they did nothing but blame me for wearing a short dress. thanks for publicizing this creep’s details. there must be consequences
in an interview today an anonymous studio exec said streaming doesn’t make as much as people think and that’s why they can’t pay writers. two things: 1. they’re paying execs hundreds of millions —let’s start there. 2. every streaming budget could be cut by 30% & w no quality loss
now that they’ve admitted to a reporter that they are intentionally trying to drive us to homelessness to break our union, i do believe federal intervention is necessary. whoever regulates labor unions needs to come in as watchdogs. and the FTC needs to witness monopolies at work
tv directors are really funny cuz they think they have the power of feature directors — and sometimes try to act like it. then they get a call from the studio. the temporarily embarrassed millionaires of hollywood
to be clear: neither the directors nor the actors are allowed to change a single word of WGA scripts. this is strikebreaking & a violation of our union rules. if you are on a set where you witness violations or you hear about violations, please report them. tips

i’m convinced both WGA & SAG need to go after the studios in federal court for “hollywood accounting” after this. how are they allowed to just straight up rob our members and no one does anything? what about the IRS?
when was the last major blockbuster you can remember that was made for a female audience? (i’ll wait). up to now, Hollywood did not think women were important. execs think the audience is men and boys and their moms / wives / girlfriends will see what they want to see
newcomers to LA don’t understand how good we had it for so long. there were no mosquitoes ever. it was basically balmy and 70 degrees year round. rents weren’t that bad at all (but we thought they were!)
yet another of my beefs is nowadays so much money gets spent that everything has to *look* like a million bucks. the problem is—sometimes your story needs to look sleazy, or young & raw, or 70’s—but everything looks has that same glossy high-production sheen now. no texture
Films need to rediscover Sleaze. Degenerates, lowlifes, bimbos, floozies...actors with catastrophic hair loss, actresses who look like they just rolled out of a seedy bar, profoundly unwholesome behavior from leads we're expected to root for.
That's Movie Magic, baby.
i just don’t understand how two directors can be unaware they’re filming a naked 17 year old non-actor who doesn’t know what she’s doing there or what’s expected of her in front of a dozen leering men
On the day of filming, the girl was unaware of what her scene entailed. By the time she made her way to a cramped room, she was naked, standing in front of nearly a dozen male cast and crew members including Josh and Benny Safdie.
execs see themselves in the audience & what movies they want to make. they see their own childhood obsessions. discourse online was ridiculing BARBIE lore cuz y’all didn’t understand that’s what we were playing with while y’all were playing with GI JOE. we want to see ourselves
make the movies for us. we will see them. make TV from our POV. we will watch it. give us our own prestige dramas. stop treating us like second class citizens, helper class in our own society, always observers, never authors. we are great business! we will reward you
Sam’s jury voting immediately to convict and then ordering pizza for themselves and all the reporters and eating it slowly before informing the world of their decision is iconic jury behavior. this is the stuff of movie juries
BARBIE has opened $300 million worldwide. if you take an estimated budget of $145 million & double it for P&A that puts them at $290 million to break even on the film. they’re making money on BARBIE the first weekend out. that is *astonishing* in the film business. billion $ film
studio execs monday morning: “what else do women like? makeup? cleaning? getting paid less? sexual harassment? abortions? gaslighting? emotional labor? cooking? framing ppl they don’t like? being crazy? front-facing videos? influencing? shopping?
what about Strawberry Shortcake?
as someone who just spent 6 weeks in Paris, you are absolutely insane if you think the food supply in the US is not completely compromised by a US gov that has been sold out to big business. they don’t allow the chemicals & processes in food we allow. you can taste the difference
it’s so odd watching people on tv who have essentially middle class jobs but they live around LA so i know each of these houses cost multi millions and they all drive status cars & their kids are all like status kids. like producers can’t imagine characters living less than them
welcome to Hollywood, editor Will Welch. here’s your first lesson: your movie will absolutely never get made so you just sold your journalistic integrity and reputation down the river for nothing. it happened so fast too. congrats! you belong here
before all this, i thought that actors enjoyed not having to drive around to auditions. now that i realize they’re expected to maintain a studio in their apartments, hire their own readers, turn around dozens of takes in 24 hours w no direction…it’s appalling.
people commenting don’t seem to understand that just because an actor may be brilliant and An Actor Whose Name You Know — that does not make them a Greenlight Star when it comes to setting up shows & movies nowadays! we *want* to be able to cast brilliant actors of all levels
i believe the Tesla implosion will be ten times bigger than Enron. and today was the tipping point. (whistleblowers can reach me through the info in my bio — your info is always anonymous)
Read the CNBC Story again.
And then again.
I don’t expect much from the bulls (and I have not been disappointed!) but even Tesla’s bears are missing the finer points. $TSLA
i think people are obsessed with AI because they think it will democratize talent. “the talented have been hoarding all the ability to make stuff and the glory for long enough! now it’s our turn!” what they’re missing is — attention is the scarce commodity. capturing it is magic
there seems to be this belief in streaming productions (especially among department heads) that if they don’t spend it, they’re not proving their worth. so instead of getting crafty they get spendy — the best of the best, no matter if the audience will ever see what they order
AI video is getting insanely powerful.
Soon, you'll be able to create a Hollywood-grade movie from your pocket.
Here's the most breathtaking AI-generated videos I've seen:
but the way the business has changed, you basically have to cast God Himself now, and God has to at least have an Oscar or Emmy to “move the needle” or “be in the conversation.” so that’s why it’s incredible what HBO did with Succession—none of those ppl were huge! all great yes
turns out a guy i’ve been interacting with for months was a guy who embezzled hundreds of millions in a crypto fraud and faked his own death two years ago … good thing i’m a screenwriter lmfao
*this isn’t even the first time this has happened to me**
this attitude extends to streaming directors who are in competition with each other as to who can out spend. feature sized background sets built for a half page scene. we’re talking burning of Atlanta stuff here. the attitude is “this makes ME look good, rest of you can fuck off”
i’ve said it before but it bears repeating: background actors are important and they do incredible work. 2nd AD’s do real directing as they direct these performers, choreographing difficult crowd scenes and coaxing the right feeling in a room. these performances matter. AI sucks
i find it amusing how pretty much all of Hollywood treats writers like garbage but when even the possibility that we might go out on strike looms the entire town shuts down for six months leading up to the deadline just in anticipation—almost like we’re the most important part?
to be clear: the Deadline article full of quotes saying their strategy was to drive us out of our apartments and homes absolutely came from the very top and was an intentional plant that they thought would have a strategic effect. those quotes were carefully crafted & placed
no manager should be getting a fee out of the budget of any show. for what? for making a phone call? for not refusing to send the script to your client like some kind protection racket? managers insisting on taking EP credits & fees like a bridge troll tax should be illegal
youtube offers creators 55% percent of ad revenue. WGA & SAG are each asking for 2% of companies’ *profits.* and these clowns won’t even negotiate with us, calling us unreasonable “terrorists” (according to one agent privately)
now they have no product at all. great businessmen!
i believe casting decisions should be based on talent and name recognition/awards/resume should be left out of it. but that’s not how the business works. it’s only gotten worse as TV has emulated movies. so i’m pointing out what a jackpot HBO hit (& their budgets thank them!)
@generalslug
way too empowered. i grew up with tons of dogs and love them deeply but the dog entitlement in cities is off the charts (this doesn’t happen in rural areas by the way). there’s something super ick about the way people treat dogs like children in cultural centers
most of the producer fees are useless. there are usually a few key people doing the producing (and it’s obvious who they are) and then there are a bunch of people drawing fees. the useless “producers” tend to love to do stuff like calling reps to tell on everyone else. reps =gods
what’s also amazing is that the Succession package was based on a somewhat known writer + big director and that’s it! no fucking IP. no A-list stars (HBO did the casting after greenlight). and Armstrong almost didn’t sell to them based on his previous show getting lost there
thinking once again about how there’s this weird resentment towards writers in Hollywood because everyone seems to think they would be doing the writing if they only had time
Murphy is set to leave Netflix at the end of his five-year overall deal, which was understood to be worth around $300M. Deadline has confirmed that he’s in talks with Disney, although no deal is yet signed
@LisaCullen
i heard this too, about six months ago. they were booking their european vacations for this month cuz they were so sure the strike was gonna happen
in 1970, CEO pay was 11 times higher than their lowest hourly worker
today CEO pay is 400 times higher than their lowest hourly worker
they’ve driven our wages down while literally robbing us. workers used to be able to live off our wages. now greedy robber-barons live off us
i met this guy on val and, we have been together for months, we did everything together and then i found out hes 45. my heart hurts i wont ever be the same. im never sleep calling with another eboy again. heres proof:
Several studio sources tell THR the new

if you are food insecure, there is no reason not to apply for EBT (food stamps). do not let pride stand in your way. an entire industry is suddenly out of work, and this does not reflect on you. do not let right wing propaganda get in your head. EBT stimulates the economy
WRITERS OF TWITTER:
I am learning that more and more people in our industry are food insecure. If you need help in these difficult times here are a few ways you can get food (1/...)
in 2007, i had a day job answering phones at an architecture firm in Beverly Hills. i was miserable and i wanted to be a paid writer *so badly.* when the WGA went out, i started driving down to Fox’s Pico gate on my precious lunch hour every day to picket with the writers.
hot take: i actually know what the budget of Succession is, and it’s not even close to the top tier of most expensive shows. it’s actually pretty cheap, for what they’re producing! think about it: each ep is basically a tight play. what costs are the locations and above the line
Shane Salerno, the WGA member who treated the Netflix picket line to a coffee truck, has been menschy to writers for a long time. He not only writes movies like the Avatar movies but he also manages writers like
@donwinslow
thru The Story Factory. he stands up for & loves writers
what’s amazing about
@DrewFromTV
’s insanely generous gesture is that it’s one of those old school hollywood moves. like he wasn’t afraid of the fact that it was uncapped, this might go for five months or more. it was a way to feed thousands of hungry ppl (without applications)
there are certain facts about hollywood that you just can’t think too much about or you’ll go literally insane. hacks work constantly. the worst writers you know get hired over and over and you’ll be like “has anyone seen or read their work?! am i the only one?” nothing is fair
i think writers are going to be experiencing the come down and the re-entry feeling for weeks after this life-altering experience. be extremely kind to yourself. no beating up on yourself. no shoulds. no comparing yourself to others. no negative voice in your head. WE DID IT
it’s absolutely true that very high level studio execs are with us. it goes without saying. it’s only the psychos at the very very top who are doing this. we love the studio execs we work with, who love filmmaking and who work with us and help us. you know who you are ❤️🥰🎥🔜
i’ll never forget when an exec told me privately that the amount i was getting paid was literally the amount the execs were blowing on private jets to locations for no particular reason
You gotta feel pretty dumb if you could have given the writers what they wanted for the cost of a few private jet rides for your executives. But you refused and accidentally kicked-off a nationwide labor solidarity movement.
#WGAstrong
MY FLIGHT WAS JUST CANCELED SIX HOURS BEFORE LEAVING FOR A HARD TO GET TO PLACE! THE ONLY OPTIONS I CAN BOOK NOW COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EACH! I want the FAA and the US DOT to take these criminals’ licenses away. They are not qualified to operate in the US
@JerryLMaine
@sagaftra
@frandrescher
SAG is not on strike. I am on strike, you moron. tweeting is not a violation of my strike! even if tweeting could violate a strike (it can’t — striking is withholding labor from employers), this tweet is in support of actors who are not huge stars but who still deserve to be cast
like if i went to the IRS and said “i have a number of partners i owe profit-sharing to, but i’m hiding the profit payments from them in a series of complex shell companies and fake transactions to hide those profits.” 🤡 the IRS would not be happy about that! that’s called fraud
“I’m worried about that pipeline,” says a former studio executive. “You get to a ‘White Lotus’ because HBO nurtured Mike White and ‘Enlightened.’ You get to an ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ because A24 nurtured the Daniels.”
so HBO started with an interesting premise & a good female writer/director (Amy Seimetz) & then allowed Levinson & The Weeknd to decide she was making the show “too female” & fired her after 80% had been shot, rewrote it into a literal DARVO dramatization starring Depp’s daughter
@mattzollerseitz
i have no insight but i wonder if it’s about how actresses fear plucking / changing eyebrow shape will change their eyebrows to the point they won’t grow back / will never look the same?
the “millionaires” out on the picket lines are fighting for their fellow workers who don’t have the leverage to get the big deals they do. they’re fighting for the future of the profession for all their fellow artists, for there to even be professional actors & writers soon
to me, the WGA’s number one priority is tying our fortunes to success. meaning, when a show or movie does well, we share meaningfully in that success. this is real residuals tied to transparent ratings on all platforms (not flat fees!). streaming is not new media. it’s not new!
i feel so disturbed by this. this is a long examination of the case against Adnan Syed by a leftist death-penalty lawyer who finds clear evidence Syed killed Hae Min Lee & has been wrongfully exonerated. True Crime has gotten a murderer released
@BenWilsonTweets
this is called being an asshole and a scab, strikebreaking and giving the finger to striking workers. you are one hundred percent not qualified to write one word professionally which is why you are relegated to narrating business case studies on a podcast or whatever you do
in the past 24 hours:
—i learned my mom, who is basically all i have in the world, has Stage IV pancreatic cancer
—called my dad to let him know & heard weird noises in the background. “where ARE you?!”
he’s been in ICU with covid for a week and no one even told me
“your script just needs to be undeniable” is laughable horseshit. Star Wars was denied many times! none other than Francis Ford Coppola is self-financing his film *right now* because everyone in town denied making his next movie
IP puts them in charge. it makes the execs who were smart enough to buy IP rights the “authors” of the picture (rather than the pesky difficult artists) the more they can minimize artists & maximize their control (ie making IP rights the “author” of the picture), the more control
IP obsession has killed the mid-budget movie, it’s killed the movie star, and it’s coming for the rest of the industry.
@JacobOller
writes about the venture capital philosophy poisoning Hollywood:
wouldn’t any normal grown man be repulsed to stand in front of a naked 17 year old girl? much less film her in some kind of simulated sex scene no one prepared her for? these people are disgusting 🤢
Elon is a slow motion SBF. the SBF story feels more dramatic for a few reasons:
- the collapse happened over a couple days
- SBF literally stole customer $ (instead of pumping $TSLA off of fraudulent numbers & stories or selling them cars that literally kill them)
and …
it’s so funny to me that all these tv writers are getting exposed as frauds who make up these 19th century style elaborately fake personal backstories they roll into town with and spin out in order to land … a writing job on a tv show? this is out of Henry James! class mobility!
@ChristySMann
yes. it’s clear the public doesn’t understand that Actor They’ve Heard Of doesn’t equal Greenlight Star (for the purposes of setting up shows!)
