How nice for US soldiers & sailors serving far from home in Asia, about to take part in the annual US-S.Korea military exercises, to have their Commander-in-Chief again deride their duty as "ridiculous & expensive," siding with the nuke-armed tyrant the exercises protect against.
In a letter to me sent by Kim Jong Un, he stated, very nicely, that he would like to meet and start negotiations as soon as the joint U.S./South Korea joint exercise are over. It was a long letter, much of it complaining about the ridiculous and expensive exercises. It was.....
Former GOP House Maj Ldr Eric Cantor on
@CNN
blames "both sides" for extremism & singles out Obama for pursuing a 1-party '09 stimulus pkg.
FACT: On Obama's inauguration night, Cantor was at the dinner of Congress' GOP leaders where they decided to oppose everything he did.
Rep. Adam Schiff, asked on
@CNN
about a House Dem's profanity against Trump, notes that Trump in a tweet turned Schiff's last name into an expletive (Schitt).
"This president is not in a position to talk about language," he says, as no one has done more to coarsen politics.
There have been a total of 6.7 million jobs created since Trump took office. Where did Ivanka create her 15 million?
P.S. In the same period -- Obama's last 35 months -- nearly 8 million jobs were created, per Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's 1.3m more.
Here’s Trump claiming today that Ivanka has “created over 15 million jobs” — or more than twice the number of total jobs created in the entire country since he took office
A reminder of this Trump tweet, 6 days before Christmas:
" Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!"
He told us. Law enforcement was warned.
The shutdown cost the economy $11 billion, $3 billion of which is a permanent loss, acc'g to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
CBO projected economic growth will slow this year to 2.3%, down from 3.1% as the sugar high from tax cuts abates.
From WH pool report: Trump arrived for fundraiser at house in Orlando draped with "Trump 2020 Keep America Great" banner.
Another sign seen along his route was held by someone dressed as Elmo: "Even I'm turning blue in 2020."
Reminder: Orrin Hatch once said there was "no question” Merrick Garland could be confirmed to the Supreme Court & that Obama "could easily name Merrick Garland, who is a fine man."
Yet when Obama did just that, Hatch joined GOP's nearly year-long blockade of Garland's nomination.
Tom Cotton is embarrassing himself both by this pedestrian, culture-war line of questioning about crime, which has nothing to do with the work of a Supreme Court justice, and by his overt hostility to Jackson.

Kayleigh McEnany suggested WH reporters want to keep people from churches--just because they were peppering her with Qs about Trump's confusing order that they reopen, Jeff objected as a churchgoer to her insinuation.
When I see tweets like this, I often think of Susan Collins justifying her vote to acquit Trump by saying, "I believe that the president has learned from this case...I believe that he will be much more cautious in the future."
Buffalo protester shoved by Police could be an ANTIFA provocateur. 75 year old Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment.
@OANN
I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. Could be a set up?
Amid reports Jordan is close to becoming House speaker, re-upping my column on why that would be a travesty. While McCarthy played along as Trump spun up his MAGA militia to attack on Jan. 6, Jordan plotted along with the insurrectionist in chief./1
Trump's White House fetes for new SCOTUS justices, with partisan invitees, are NOT normal.
Past presidents typically avoided them, in a nod to judiciary branch's independence. Justices' were sworn in at the Court.
The late Justice John Paul Stevens wrote about this:
The Dallas News story kills it with a line on Ted Cruz -- He went to Cancun “...not long enough for a sunburn, but plenty of time to get blistered.”
Good one
@toddgillman
Evidence that FBI "investigation" of Kavanaugh allegations was not: Man respected in both parties, who says he was an eyewitness, tells senator respected in both parties, who then goes to FBI chief. Nothing happens, given limits set by WH & Senate GOP.
Thinking about Trump's frequent lie that he inherited a mess from the Obama-Biden administration.
They left him the longest period of job growth in US history, after inheriting a true mess -- the worst recession since the Depression.
What Biden's inheriting? Now that's a mess.
A secretive Kushner-led project that enlists companies to bring medical equipment to the US has provided 10s of millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies to the largest medical-supply companies with little public accounting or check on price gouging.
I have new fury & disdain for those who won't wear masks or keep distance: My baby sister has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Only her husband can visit & he lives in terror, when he's not at the hospital, of coming into contact with people--So many unmasked!
WEAR MASKS PLEASE
From WH pool report at his IN rally:
Trump told the crowd to take a look at the "thousands and thousands of people" who were outside and couldn't get in, and said they were lucky. Pool did not see any people waiting outside the coliseum to get in.
In that "dark period," Trump bought ads in 1989 seeking death penalty for 5 boys of color, 14-16, accused of Central Park rape. In '02 when DNA & a rapist's confession led to their release, he opposed it. In Oct '16 he still said they're guilty.
Has Trump apologized? No!
....Super Predator was the term associated with the 1994 Crime Bill that Sleepy Joe Biden was so heavily involved in passing. That was a dark period in American History, but has Sleepy Joe apologized? No!
This notion that Steele’s memos triggered the FBI investigation of the Trump campaign persists, even after a whole team WSJ reporters, me included, found that it’s just not true.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse: Do you think that Kavanaugh, when he was a Bill Clinton investigator on Ken Starr's team, would have let a 3rd witness to Clinton-Lewinski encounters escape investigation, as Mark Judge has escaped?
"Not in a million years."
For Trump, Obama is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't:
In this mtg with lawmakers on guns, Trump tells Sens. Toomey & Manchin they cldn't pass their 2013 background check bill because Obama didn't give support. They said Obama did help. Trump: "Well, there's your problem."
Trump is tweeting. Before he wished a "HAPPY" Memorial Day, he fired off 4 tweets threatening to yank the GOP Convention from NC unless its Dem gov--"still in Shutdown mood"--"immediately" guarantees "many thousands of enthusiastic Republicans" can fill Charlotte's arena in Aug.
When did the Secret Service start obstructing journalists’ reporting? I covered & traveled with three presidents & not once did the secret service interfere.
Jared Kushner did not answer my question and the secret service informs me, while obscuring my phone, that despite identifying as WH press, there is a “time and a place” for questions.
It is unclear when and where that is.
"Why are you lying about it, sir?"
That's what WH transcript of Trump's remarks today TWICE records reporters asking:
1-to his repeated claim IG report "exonerated" him (it had no'g to do w/Russia probe)
2-to his blaming splitting families at border to Dems & a nonexistent law
Sen. Lisa Murkowski on Trump today:
“I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage."
"He hasn’t been focused on what is going on with COVID. He’s either been golfing or ..." 1/
Another thing I never expected to hear from a US president:
CBS: "Your biggest foe globally right now?"
TRUMP: "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now you wouldn't think of the European Union but they're a foe."
This is supposed to be a briefing on a pandemic and Trump has gone off on a tangent about polls that he says show how happy veterans are with the VA under his administration.
Has anyone told Trump that yesterday a man--clearly influenced by this sort of anti-CNN, anti-press attack--was arrested as he planned a REAL attack at CNN-HQ to, as he put it, "gun you all down"?
ATTN:
@PressSec
Even Crazy Jim Acosta of Fake News CNN agrees: “Trump World and WH sources dancing in end zone: Trump wins again...Schumer and Dems caved...gambled and lost.” Thank you for your honesty Jim!
Little-noted this wk: While McCarthy was all budget-cutting bravado in debt-limit talks with Biden, the House Appropriations panel canceled votes on 4 bills that must fill in gory details of the cuts the GOP is demanding. Divided Rs didn't have the votes.
Robt Redfield, the CDC director named by Trump, in the '80s worked with a group that "maintained that AIDS was 'God's judgment' against homosexuals, spread in an America weakened by single-parent households and loss of family values."
Sickening. I've been in that office, in the years I covered Congress, for help from the parliamentarians understanding some bit of Senate procedure.
Ransacked, shattered window.
So many Capitol attackers are on video. They can be found, and charged with federal crimes.
Trump, proven inciter of violence, just emailed followers: "ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE IN 24 HOURS!"--at Tues hrg on whether he's violated his gag order. "I COULD BE THROWN IN JAIL AT THAT VERY MOMENT!"
He issues an SOS: "We need a HUGE outpouring of support before the day is over..."
Manifesto: "Hispanic invasion of TX"
Trump tweets:

Trump is in Elkhart, Ind., for this political rally, boasting of his job creation. Well, Elkhart was at 20% unemployment when Obama took office, under 4% when he left. That's the kind of picture that Trump inherited v. the one his predecessor did.
Miles Taylor was for 2+ yrs Chf of Staff at Homeland Security Dept & saw Trump close up-as video shows.
1st-hand account of Trump: "terrifying...actively doing damage to our security." Wanted to w/hold aid for CA wildfires because CA doesn't vote for him.
Many thousands of people work for our government. With that said, a former DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE named Miles Taylor, who I do not know (never heard of him), said he left & is on the open arms Fake News circuit. Said to be a real “stiff”. They will take anyone against us!
It's been nearly a year since Trump at news conference told DACA beneficiaries not to worry--“We’re going to show great heart” toward "these incredible kids."
7 months later he ordered an end to the program by March & set demands as his price for backing an alternative.
Big win for Republicans as Democrats cave on Shutdown. Now I want a big win for everyone, including Republicans, Democrats and DACA, but especially for our Great Military and Border Security. Should be able to get there. See you at the negotiating table!
Trump is making fun of Christine Blasey Ford's testimony before 1000s of people at a political rally in Mississippi -- denigrating her claims she only had 1 beer, doesn't know who drove her to party or home, on and on.
So much for his earlier claim she was a good witness.
Hours later I'm still blown away by the Nat'l Assn of Manufacturers--a GOP-friendly group if there ever was one--calling on Pence & Trump cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office "to preserve democracy."
"The outgoing president incited violence..." 1/
"Record Jobs numbers"? WRONG AGAIN.
In Trump's first 16 months, 2.966 million new jobs have been created.
In Obama's last 16 months, 3.452 million new jobs were created.
Real facts courtesy of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The U.S. has an increased economic value of more than 7 Trillion Dollars since the Election. May be the best economy in the history of our country. Record Jobs numbers. Nice!
BREAKING: The White House is withdrawing the nomination of Elaine McCusker, who questioned the legality of freezing military aid to Ukraine, to be DoD's permanent comptroller.
When I was called the C-word by NYT or WSJ readers, I'd email back that I first heard the word from a HS boyfriend's father--when he was beating his wife on Xmas Eve in front of their 6 kids--"And that," I'd add, "is what kind of person uses the C-word."
I want to thank everyone who has emailed and tweeted at me, calling me a c—- it has made me rethink your candidate, and more seriously study their policies. I appreciate you all, very much.
Trump's last tweet before bed & his first this a.m.--blaming the media as "true enemy of the people"--after a week that saw a would-be bomber target Dems, a white racist kill a black couple & an anti-Semite, anti-immigrant madman kill 11 Jews.
No other president would do this.
There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news. The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People, must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly. That will do much to put out the flame...
This phrase in the
@washingtonpost
story today on John Kelly's exit as WH chief of staff stopped me cold:
Trump, it said, "HAS NO PLANS TO HUMILIATE KELLY, OFFICIALS SAID."
Think about that.
Trump, posing on the White House balcony with new Justice Amy Coney Barrett, is an unprecedented bit of staging. Unprecedented because the 3 branches of government traditionally maintained the appearance of separation of powers, and of the independence of the judiciary.
Reacting to Trump press conference, Dr. Irwin Redlener, director of the Nat'l Ctr for Disaster Preparedness, says, "The information was fine, only about two months late...More happy talk from the president and the team around him is not helping."

Kayleigh McEnany's offensive insinuation that WH reporters oppose people going to places of worship--just because they had Qs about safety & Trump's authority--underscores that Trump's "order" to reopen churches is a political move.
Trump again claims "massive" trade deal w/China--“largest contract ever"--yet China hasn't acknowledged any deal. Incredibly, he also says China will buy "$50B worth of agricultural products”--a 5-fold increase! Don't count on it.
"The Pretend Trade Deal"
I've now lived through 4 of these sagas in 37 yrs: GOP passes huge tax cuts, vowing they'll pay for themselves thru growth. They don't. Deficits rise.
Why do people keep buying this promise? Go ahead, cut taxes. But don't deny the math.
last fall: Treasury Secretary Mnuchin says “Not only will this tax plan pay for itself but it will pay down debt,” boosting revenue/cutting deficits through growth, reduced corporate tax avoidance
this fall: Treasury reports 2018 deficit up 17%, corporate tax payments down 31%
I've covered tax legislation off and on since the late '80s. NEVER, ever has a freshman member of Congress gotten so much attention for their idea. This fixation with
@AOC
is something.
I haven't seen a sight like that since I walked out of the Wall Street Journal's bureau in downtown DC very late on the night of 9/11 ... and I'd hoped to never see it again.
Imagine if, like Mamie Till, a parent of a murdered school kid had an open casket. As Till said, "I wanted the world to see what they did to my boy."
Do Americans need to see what an assault weapon does to a (small) body before we act?

Meanwhile, in the Senate, leader McConnell vowed the Obama stimulus bill would get no GOP votes there (it got 3), tho 800k Americans lost jobs that Jan '09.
In sum, it was Rs who made the '09 stimulus pkg a 1-party bill, not Obama.
TPP. Paris Accord. Now the Iran nuclear deal. For decades, in fact much of US history, a hallmark of democracy was that presidents changed but the US honored its deals. Change them, yes, once in a while. But not break them.
Trump has called into question American's good faith.
For Barrett, as for Kavanaugh & Gorsuch, the question of their judicial independence from Trump was/is a legitimate one given his many suggestions they'll rule as he wants. That their 1st act as justices was to agree to a WH fete with a partisan crowd only heightens the concerns.
@CNN
FACT 2: Partly to attract GOP support, Obama held down the cost of the stimulus bill--now widely seen as too small for the Great Recession--and included about 40% tax cuts, not spending.
But GOP leaders had decided at that dinner to oppose everything.
Matthew is right. Frank Luntz was advising Newt Gingrich 30 years ago, with polling and focus groups to determine which words Gingrich should use to rile up voters. He proudly shared his divisive vocabulary with us reporters covering Congress then.
Frank Luntz complaining about "divisiveness" is akin to Typhoid Mary complaining about the spread of infections. Why the media gives him a platform is unreal. He is a huge cause of the vitriol that exists in America.
Column: It’s indicative of an improved climate for Dems that they can look to NC for a possible Senate win to keep the majority. Cheri Beasley, ex-chief justice of NC Supreme Court, would be the only Black woman in the Senate.
For those suggesting Democrats should try to save House Republicans from this speaker morass, my column says not "no,"

Yet again, as he's done at past rallies, Trump tells his KY crowd that a huge throng -- 25,000 to 35,000 people -- are outside because they couldn't get in the packed house, & there are "movie screens" set up so they can watch the rally.
None of that is true.
"So I guess they said she was threatened," Trump says to his MI rally about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer--as if he doesn't believe the FBI case against 13 men for plotting to abduct her.
Crowd chants "Lock her up!"
Yup--their gov was targeted & they want HER locked up.
Law & order.
Larry Kudlow is lying here. There's no other way to describe it. A guy with his background in biz & govt--he was at the WH budget office once, for god's sake--knows that annual federal deficits are going UP. Rapidly.
Kudlow to FBN: "The deficit...is coming down. And it’s coming down rapidly."
This isn't accurate.
On a 12-month basis, the deficit as a share of GDP rose to 3.8% in May from 3.2% one year earlier.
Trump's purported concessions are the damnedest thing--he's offering things that wouldn't even be necessary had he not rejected/killed the very programs:
--DACA protections for dreamers
--Protected status for refugees
--ability to apply for US asylum in your own country

"Both sides" analyses like Cantor's that don't address the GOP's very real problems will not fix it.

More from CBO: The president who promised he'd erase deficits will run for reelection with deficits having risen every year of his term, to a projected > $1 Trillion in FY 20 from $587 billion (under Obama annual deficits declined after the first global recession year).

More than "several" --8 women in teens to mid-20s, incl'g a state senator, allege Herbster sexually groped them. He reached under the senator's skirt.
Trump's complaint? That Herbster wasn't fighting back hard enough vs his accusers.
The 2 men indeed have a lot in common.
Trump is going to a rally tonight with NE gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster, who has been accused of sexually assaulting several women.
The two have a lot in common.

For 5 yrs people have pushed to rename that Selma bridge, where Lewis was clubbed & bled, for him. Pettus was a Confederate general and Grand Dragon of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. No brainer, Alabama.
It would be fitting to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge after John Lewis the conscience of Congress. He once told me how the Kennedy brothers did not agree to the Oval Office meeting with Dr. King before the ‘63 March until afterward because they feared it would be violent.
