Every day I am in awe of international students. Doing a PhD in your native language and home country is hard. Doing it in a non-native language, in a different country and different culture is so much harder. You are not stupid. You are legends.

I'm always hugely impressed by people who present in their non-native language. You might doubt yourselves but you are legends. 🏆 It's hard enough in your native language but doing in a second language is exceptional.

Saying to a new PhD student find the gap in the literature is a big ask.
It's like saying look for something that isn't there. How can you ever be sure you've found a gap? Maybe you just haven't looked long enough.
Some guidance from the supervisor could help a lot.

If you are supervising an international student who is trying to write in their non-native language - tell them how awesome they are. They often feel incompetent, frustrated and even stupid. In reality they're really smart - just doing something very complicated. Tell them.

Don't compare your work output this week with other weeks. These are not normal times so don't expect your normal output.
Things will take longer.
There are most disruptions and distractions.
It's hard to focus.
So give yourself a break. Be kind to yourself.

#PhDSupervision
: Being a good researcher does not automatically mean you are a good supervisor. There's more to supervision that just getting the research done. Teaching how to develop a research question, to critique the literature, how to analyse data and write well.
The worst thing you write is better than the best thing you didn't write.
Just get something down on paper. Then you can improve on it. Keeping it all in your head is no good. You need to write it down.
