Always add 10% to estimates for Indians so you can give them the discount when they inevitably request it. Trust me on this.

Sounds like you should do it yourself then. $140 is barely worth answering the phone for, let alone setting up your account, acquiring part, scheduling install, and then billing it out. To be fair though, can’t really expect customers to understand this.

I’m just gonna say it: I think you are certifiably insane if you think it’s a good idea to acquire a trade business with no experience in the industry yourself. Doesn’t mean you won’t be successful obviously. But you are nuts for thinking it’s likely to go well.

Look I know it’s a difficult concept to grasp but your “per square foot pricing” is irrelevant when it comes to most remodel work. Especially smaller products. Best example? I’m not tiling your 6x5 bathroom for $450 brah. Get real.

Telling kids to “get into the trades” without any additional context or personal experience is the same as: “You should go to college” advice. Both require nuance. There are a lot of bad routes to take in the trades. A huge number of tradesman make $25-$30/hr.

Why your plumber is charging you $140/hr (or more) to work on your 🏠: 1. He spent 4-6 years doing shit work (pun intended) for $25-$30/hr 2. You didn’t. & most importantly 3. 80% of homeowners are psychotic and you probably fall into that category.

How much can you really expect of an employee making $25 to $30/hr in trades? Thats barely enough to afford rent in most places (if that). Maybe $5-$7 more than if they were working entry level job at large corp. Yet customers (homeowners) expect the world. It’s a tough biz.

The only reason to do a “minimum service charge” type of job is the potential for upsells/recurring work. If a customer “just needs something done really quick” and balks at the idea of paying $150, it’s a dead end and of no benefit. Not personal, just business.

@mikej36 People who balk at $140 for a small job are not going to be return customers of any value. Those who value the service understand $140 is not that much money. If that amount is a lot to them, you can be almost certain they won’t be signing onto a larger job.

Employees drive me fucking crazy sometimes. “It’s kinda hot I was hoping I could finish this next week.” Need to hire more Mexicans I guess. White guys not cutting it.

Important to remember: Most of the best business operators are terrible husbands, shitty dads, horribly out of shape, and just generally slaves to money. I’ve spent my entire life around entrepreneurs. I’ve seen the divorces & lost relationships first hand many, many times.…

I put an estimate together for fence staining & house painting. Total came to $12,000 or so. Thought about the customer & potential red flags, as well as how far away it was. Decided to added $4k. I figured they’d say no immediately. Didn’t happen. Raise your prices.

When I first started our business, I of course had no customer base. I decided to write a generalized letter introducing ourselves & our offerings. At the time, I didn’t know EDDM was even a thing…😂 I literally went on Google maps and pulled addresses for nearly every SMB…

Just got our first 4 star review. Quoted work for the guy, he decided to just go with half the bid because the other service was apparently too high. Went out to perform the agreed upon work. Pulled some tiles off and found the entire shower to be in need of replacement.…

Friendly reminder: Don’t send a team of techs to go pick up materials unless you have no other choice. They’re burning unnecessary hours doing unskilled labor, not to mention each trip is gonna cost an extra $10-$15 in Red Bulls & snacks. Ask me how I know…😂

“Can you send me a line item estimate breaking down costs for labor and materials of each job?” No. Absofuckinglutely not. Cost of the job is cost of the job. I give step by step explanations of what exactly we will do, and won’t do. Labor & materials is none of your…

Lot of people don’t realize how small business/money X really is. There’s obviously a lot of great contributors on here, but it’s still a small enough pool that all kinds & sizes of business overlap/interact with each other. Which, when you think about it, is a crazy concept.…

Nobody really talks about it on SMB Twitter (mainly cuz everybody in this corner is a cleaner) But there are some seriously shady contractors operating out there. Frankly, many of them are straight up criminals. Ripping customers off by taking deposits, spiking jobs, etc…

Here’s the reality: One of the hardest parts about business is simply starting. It takes some fortitude to strike it out on your own. Some people will support you, some will act like it but quietly hope for failure, and some will openly ridicule the idea. Pro tip: surround…

Hired a project manager finally. $8k/month. With the current jobs we’ve got lined up, feel like it’s more of a “lead tech for the big jobs” type role. Need a small-jobs manager now.

Contractors take on an enormous amount of risk. Building and repairing homes comes with massive liability. Not to mention employees performing dangerous work, your trucks all over the road, etc etc etc Not for the faint of heart. Prices should continue to increase.
