As people are arguing about the development of doctrine again, often without any acknowledgement from either side of the principles the Church gives us for discerning what can & cannot change, my take on our "Doctrine on the Development of Doctrine".

@ghostowlredux This seems ... not true. Basically the first Western literary text we have, Gilgamesh, is all about the horror of death. Egyptian culture was obsessed with trying to provide comfort against the dread of it. Definitely not just a Christian thing.

Some will dunk on this as a lack of faith, but it responds to an argument which has traction in Rome, that you don’t need to be pastoral to Trads b/c (unlike libs) they have nowhere to go. But the cynics are wrong – Fragility of faith exists all across the ideological spectrum.

Deacon Ditewig's failure to deal with the fact every priest is by necessity a deacon, I'm afraid, basically renders his entire argument invalid. A vocation to the priesthood does & must presume a vocation to the deaconate! You can't be a priest & not a deacon!

Eliminating a seminary diaconate is not only possible but necessary for envisioning a mature and fully formed diaconate for the future.

my 2 cents: Catholic thinking (not just professional theologians) done outside, far, distant from the Vatican will have a lot to do for the Church after the Synod. Synodality remains on the horizon of the Catholic Church, whatever Francis’ Synod 2021-2024 does or fails to do.

We remind Bishop Barron that Thomas Jefferson was a deist. Jefferson rejected traditional Christian beliefs like original sin, the virgin birth, and the resurrection. If Jefferson lived now, the good bishop would undoubtedly label him "most disturbing and frankly dangerous."

Nonsense! Many disgraced & dubious religious artists have created works that over the centuries have raised minds and hearts to God. This is pure iconoclasm, Puritan not Catholic, and heretical, bc it does not allow for grace to supplement sinful nature.

Marriage as a sacrament wasn’t a dogma until 1563. And the church’s legal control over marriage didn’t solidify until the 12th century. The idol of the “respectable heterosexual marriage” is antithetical to the early church.

Trads need to learn how to take a win. The priest in question doesn't appear to be the sharpest tool in God's toolbox, but that a formal apology is being offered even from Cupich's Chicago, is a good sign the limits around Fiducia Supplicans are being enforced.

@TheresaMac1960 A simple current example: We now have assemblies (scripture sharing, etc) led by lay persons, when there is no mass on Sunday, due to priest shortage. But many persons, chosen to preside, will opt out and insist a deacon lead the celebration, if a deacon happens to be around…
