Repeal of AFSPA has to be contingent upon sparing Army for internal security duty. Army unlike police doesn't have non-lethal tools like tear gas, water canons & batons to tackle violent Civil unrest. Army's only option is to open fire. AFSPA is thus required to protect Army Ops.

@IlhanMN While making this huge effort of standing up, do stand up for minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh too. From 12% in 1947, the percentage of minorities has fallen to less than 2% in Pak and less than 5% in Bangladesh, while in India minority population has grown from 12% to 20%.

On 31st Oct 1984, returning from my NTPC office at 6pm, was stopped by a Delhi police cop short of Delhi Cantt flyover. He curtly directed me away from the flyover as Sikhs were being flung on to the tracks beneath. His firm direction saved my life. And got me to join the IPS!

Some people may argue that let Army too carry non- lethal weapons. This is not possible for two reasons. One, it will dilute Military doctrine of 'eliminating enemy in combat'. Two, it will make mockery of 'rule of law' as Military can't keep up with constant judicial oversight.

@AdityaMenon22 Jathedar ji is mistaken. Sikhism is not monotheistic in the sense of Abrahmic religions. Our monotheism is akin to Vedic Hinduism's "unimaginable god", also akin to Confucianism as it focuses on knowledge and wisdom, as exemplified by status of "living Guru" to Guru Granth Sahib.
