just caught the end of an RTE radio piece where a lad put GPS trackers in his household recycling, proving it was going direct to Poolbeg incinerator, and not to recycling
absolutely no one will be surprised at that story
The IRA (Irish Rural Association) turning attention to NGOs who are apparently trying to drive farmers off the land as part of Eamonn Ryans One World agenda.
hearing Dawn Meats have been granted planning permission by ABP
it’s an 8km pipe for a Section 4 trade effluent discharge license from the meat plant into Boyne River
Double chainlink fencing into hardcore, "Greenway", Co Meath
Unclear how the local authorities are getting all these environmental assessments signed off
Where they cross wildlife corridors... I'd be cutting out small critter sized crossing points in the wires
just a couple of grey beards looking at preserving native oak woods (that we don’t own or have permission to be in)
with this site it’s gotta be guerrilla conservation, as you would never get landowner permission to repair deer fences, cull, remove invasives or plant 🌱acorns
then an industry rep came on to say the industry is regulated so this is rare!
statistically, there’s close to zero environmental inspections across water, air, noise or waste
Plus
initial landowner has now withdrawn consent, so the original planning can’t be actioned
Dawn Meats would not have the access and now need a new location to enter the river
Which would require a whole new application
someone/everyone buy that landowner a pint
did you know Wicklow bridges were all drilled out to take explosive charges during the war?
if you take a look under one, you’ll see the holes
this is Derrybawn Bridge

daily reminder that turf isn’t just an air pollution, public health, climate change and biodiversity issue
it’s also a significant impact on Irish water quality
@RightToKnow
if anyone knows the GPS recycling tracker man (Dublin based), I’d be keen to chat
I know there’s a related issue where domestic waste is going to Construction & Demolition Waste licenced facilities (they aren’t licenced for general waste)
via
@righttoknow
we can ask about prosecutions/ enforcement actions for operators that are dumping recycling
but my guess is no one (apart from this one citizen scientist) is putting GPS trackers in recycling so there’s no enforcement actions
meanwhile
lads in Kerry literally putting digger in the river and selling gravel out of spawning beds
no sanctions here, unless there’s dead fish

Today, landowner John Price was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for the destruction of 1.5km of the protected River Lugg.
Together with
@NaturalEngland
, we welcome this sentence and will continue to work hard to restore the health of our rivers.
📰:
dam good day in the Wicklow hills, on the peat conservation project
beavering away with NPWS
needs a big conversation about funding this work at scale, and addressing the other end (mainly grazing/burning pressures)
🦫
does anyone know if the regular rules on river bank protections (tree felling, vegetation removal etc) apply to modified waters like canals?
was sent this pic, allegedly Inland Waterways. maybe local authority? or just private developer?
Ballinamore
spoken to a few people who work with juvenile offenders and no one has any idea why DPP did not charge for this attack. in other countries this would bring people on to the streets.
The father of one of the three teenagers scarred in an acid attack in Waterford earlier this year is considering a High Court challenge against the decision not to prosecute two of his son’s attackers
keep returning to this map
for sure, there's multiple water pollution issues in Ireland
but you could rewrite the entire River Basin Management Plan to just address nitrates in Cork
tomorrow I’m off to Derrybawn to see a lad who wants to replant a big Sitka Spruce site with native woodland
if you’ve ever looked into the lawns at Derrybawn House or walked up into National Park above …
it’s perhaps the most challenging site in Wlicklow to grow trees
Rewild Wicklow will be helping NPWS with a peatland restoration trial in the Wicklow Mountains National Park

Comeragh Mountain SAC fires in Co Waterford yesterday were in fact four separate fires, suggesting a fair level of coordination for those involved.
Looks like eastern fire didn’t take for whatever reason 🔥
it’s the 8km distance that makes thid unique, I’ve never seen a section 4 that’s more than a stones throw from the effluent discharge pipe
why is waste not stored, and forwarded for offsite remediation
can see this one in High Court, as it’s so off the charts bonkers
@SenatorMarkDaly
@opwireland
Mark, you don't want OPW going anywhere near your local rivers. A search on this website will give you an idea of the 'improvements' OPW can make. Some of their works will take a generation to remedy
In 2016, 4,900 acres were added to the Wicklow national park (at the Featherbeds in Dublin uplands, which added about 10% more area to the park portfolio)
Have there ever been proposals for additional national parks?
If so, where would they be located ?
Did you know that with all the beautiful lush countryside in Ireland, there are only 6 national parks?! Here's to more national parks!!

NPWS Liffey Head bog rewetting project
it’s close to road, and machine access is possible, compared to the sites we’ve been working on with Rewild Wicklow
Whatever about the wildlife how the hell do the Kerry locals put up with that volume of thick smoke from this level of burning. Inside or outside of the breeding season this seems dangerous.
heard an interesting response to the issue whereby employers can’t ask about vaccination status
invite team for lunch to a restaurant where you know they always check digital Covid certs 💡
Data isn't yet available for all counties, but this one is concerning
Coillte pre-harvesting inspections found just one single bird nesting site in Cork (sparrow hawk nest in Bantry)
One possible nest location from 50,517 ha of Coillte forest?
here’s the map of the planned pipe (just in case you think I’m making this shit up)
it’s an abattoir waste pipe discharging into a river that 25,000 homes in East Meath and South Louth get their drinking water supply from
59% of the Wicklow National Park is in commonage for sheep
- 131km2 out of the 222km2
if the goal is habitat restoration, buying commonage might make more sense ?
or buying out the Coillte plantations on peat soils that border the National Park ?
more 'greenway' fencing
you don't see these barriers on farms, they are all local authority projects
via AIE, and searching tenders, it's possible to document most, if not all of this rapidly growing class of wildlife barriers
but how to remove them? and prevent new builds?
This type of fencing seems to be installed everywhere in Castletroy, Co Limerick, now - including areas adjoining the Lower River Shannon SAC. It blocks movements of wildlife (including Otters) and causes habitat fragmentation. It is along the Castletroy “greenway” also.
great idea, I was thinking we could put similar on Irish rivers at the end of every Section 4 trade effluent discharge pipe, noting who owns the licence and which local authority officer signed it off. 🤔
Many blue plaques have appeared this weekend by waterways across Newark and Sherwood reading: “Robert Jenrick MP voted against reducing the dumping of raw sewage in our rivers. Demand change now."
I've found two already! Love it!
#dirtywater
DAFM forest road licence approvals are obviously licencing the actual road construction
But … it’s also double drains into the nearest watercourse
most criticism of state forestry is clearfell and replanting on inappropriate sites
someone should document road licences
Avoca mines visit… not sure what to say about this place
It’s imposing, in some places like the surface of a toxic moon, in others nature is slowly re-establishing
checking my trailcam after a few days in the woods
it’s a small (ten acre) mixed woodland site behind my house, there’s between 10-15 sika hinds, two large badger setts, a woodpecker pair and the odd pinemartin
headed up the hills today to take another look at Sitka Spruce replanting on steep peat soils
@ShaunaReports
covered the issues well, but it’s such an issue in Wicklow that I think it needs ongoing attention
current Govt plan is replanting upland, mono-culture sitka spruce and clearfell
that’s what I’m seeing in Wicklow hills
absolutely conflicting with Blue Dot / Waters of LIFE objectives
peat soils, so additional impact is surface water quality
am I missing something?
Irish forestry will also have to change. We must move away from upland, mono-culture & clear-fell plantations to allowing trees re-seed naturally in ‘continuous cover’ forests and promote the new agroforestry options
@pippa_hackett
is introducing.
@IrishRainforest
one to watch
it’s early days on Irish solar farm planning permission.. but you would think putting panels on built infrastructure (buildings/carparks/motorways) is better than on farmland/peatland
cc
@IrishRainforest
thinking about a canoe trip west to map and photograph Irish island woodlands
I know in some lakes farmers put sheep on islands, but there must still be islands with undisturbed woods
Like this one on Tawnyard
so we won a thing 🥇
well done to everyone who’s been volunteering on the Rewild Wicklow woodland and peatland restoration days

Peatland restoration hasn’t been a feature of climate change discussion.
There’s just 205 people employed in peatland rehabilitation in the Midlands
Is there scope to significantly increase bog rewetting, to reduce emissions?
