I watched this video last night and it's still freaking me out. A deep fake where Bill Hader *turns into* Tom Cruise and Seth Rogan *while impersonating them*. (via
@MohamedGhilan
/ Ctrl Shift Face on YouTube)
@MohamedGhilan
*shivers*.
Anyways, imagine when this is all properly weaponised on top of already fractured and extreme online ecosystems and people stop believing their eyes and ears.
I've been watching the main UK news shows every evening and my impression is 🤨: When Italy reached the death toll of 800+ the UK reports about Italy were full of justifiable gravity. But reporting the same numbers in the UK don't seem to generate the same gravity? Am I wrong?
@RVAwonk
@TomiLahren
(one of the many causes of the revolution in Syria was higher food prices due to drought leading up to 2011. I was there in 2009 and saw it)
@MohamedGhilan
True videos will be called fake videos, fake videos will be called true videos. People steered towards calling news outlets "fake", will stop believing their own eyes. People who want to believe their own version of reality will have all the videos they need to support it.
I wonder is
@OpenAI
performing the biggest act of "don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness" in human history. They appear to have scraped everyone's content on the internet under a US interpretation of fair use. And that's different from, say, search engines.
It's worth watching the whole 6 minute clip of Jonathan Powell from
@BBCNewsnight
the other night. It's a view rarely expressed in the UK on a mainstream news show, and
@maitlis
(who I admire) seemed a little perplexed by the statement of the actual detail
@MohamedGhilan
Some things to note since this went viral:
1) A person asked if it was a genuine shapeshifter (!)
2) Qanon/Trump people said this came out now because it's connected to Epstein or is "deep state" training
3) Others wondered how Hader was able to do it (some jokingly)
@MohamedGhilan
Of course the other questions:
Will we need A-list actors in the future when we could just superimpose their faces onto the faces of other actors? Would we know the difference?
And could we not choose at the start of a movie which actors we want to play which roles?
🙈🤷♂️
@MohamedGhilan
This is despite the actual tweet calling it a fake at the outset (admittedly not everyone has heard of deepfakes), and a later explanation of what is happening. And in fairness this is a very small portion of the reactions that I've seen at least.
So, make of that what you will.
AFAIK the biggest security vulnerabilities IN THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING have just been exposed. *I'm trying* not to exaggerate here.
1. Update your Mac to High Sierra 10.13.2
2. Update Windows now and again next week
3. Update Linux NOW
3. Update Chrome NOW
4. Update Firefox NOW
When Zuck makes a statement, whenever that will be, he will:
1. Admit they got things wrong "in the past"
2. Promise this won't happen again
3. Will work with regulators to correct the situation
4. Say that the solution is for people the use Facebook *more*.
Fantastic news
@amazon
announce 1000 new jobs for DUBLIN. Great boost for capital and clear signal that Ireland investment pipeline is strong.
@IDAIRELAND
congrats
A brief thread on the Facebook ad and page problem (h/t to
@TheLiberal_x
and
@TransparentRef
) 1/ The day before Facebook introduced the new view ads feature in Ireland, this domain was registered:
We *might* be shifting gears. Thursday was, in a single day:
- highest number of doses (27,490) (of which highest number of first doses (18,961))
- highest number of Pfizer (17,386)
- highest number of Moderna (1,918)
- highest number of AZ (8,186)
This is headline news IMHO.
News in Ireland that may have been missed in the UK:
1. 79,000 first time Irish passports were issued to UK residents Jan-Jun 2019. (60k first time were issued to people in Ireland)
2. In the year to April, 20k UK people immigrated from the UK to Ireland
@MohamedGhilan
And thanks to
@clarkgregg
/ Agent Phil Coulson for helping melt my mentions. Here's hoping you are not replaced by a generative adversarial network (GAN) or some other machine learning algo.
@DanielJHannan
@GeorgePeretzQC
@SebDance
Or just read some history, it might better inform you. Will you be correcting your piece on the Tele website or on Twitter, about the rationale for Bertie Ahern's resignation in 2008? And the reason Cowen resigned and Fianna Fail were destroyed electorally?
Running a country 101:
1) Do we have enough power for everyone & future demand?
2) Do we have reliable clean water supplies & treat all sewage?
3) Do we have enough homes for everyone & future demand?
4) Do we successfully balance biodiversity / farming needs?
Ireland: no.

Feels like this huge story was missed a bit last night. Strong indications that we now know how Multiple Sclerosis is triggered - the Epstein-Barr Virus
Things Ireland is good at:
Craic, music, literature, food production
Bad at:
Clean drinking water
Damp-proof homes
Planning for the future
Big infrastructure projects
Climate change mitigation
Regulating
Hate to be the bearer of good news, but relative to our EU peers Ireland is doing pretty well on vaccines. We tend to always compare to our nearest now non-EU neighbour who have different supplies.
I dunno about everyone else here on this Twitter machine but I still sing "30 days has September.. " in my head and I've been four decades on this planet.
Here are two bookmarks to history.
1. The moment Trump walked out to be sworn in.
2. Almost exactly four years later - *on the exact same spot* - a policeman pointing a gun, through teargas
Or in internet parlance:
How it started. How it's going
I've no particular issue with the Taoiseach going to Washington or getting vaccinated either, or his officials. Not sure why it would be an issue either? Just me?
And just to be absolutely crystal fucking clear. If you're still following Gemma O'Doherty after her descent into the abyss of far right conspiracy nonsense, false narratives, and absolute fucking bullshit, then you're a) an idiot and b) should unfollow me
I wonder if higher case numbers have anything to do with people between the ages of 5 and 18 having respiratory systems? 🤷♂️ And CO2 monitors were installed in all schools before reopenings right? 🤷♂️😬
Ireland really needs to stop looking to the UK for infrastructure inspo wrt design, attitude etc, just because they're our old colonial power and speak the same language.
The Dutch speak English, have much better rail/cycling infrastructure design and are not much further away.
Just chatting to
@PeterKGeoghegan
and we're both struck. Ireland is *another planet* to the UK right now. Irish people consume both Irish and British media.
Ireland: consistent, repetitive messaging. Consistent action, complete shift in media focus, expert advice.
UK: 🤷♂️
All the signs say our whole world is about to utterly change. On top of the last two years of the pandemic. 2019 will seem like innocent days. My thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine.
Car bomb in Russia targeting Dugin apparently but killing his daughter; and Albanian soldiers injured by two Russians at a weapons factory in Gramsh. Busy news night.
"We noticed that we were getting a lot of donations from Ireland so we were wondering why . . . sorry I get emotional talking about this part,” Ms Begay broke off. “And I learned about what the Choctaw did for the Irish people, and it was so beautiful.”
(For those who are new to this story, we created the Choctaw-Ireland Scholarship programme for Choctaw people to study in Ireland (such as in Cork, as detailed here: )
Here's the before and after for Bryan. Working for RT for years. Looks like something happened recently?
@27khv
have you had a change of heart working for RT? Please tell us about the change of bio 🙏 you haven't really tweeted much since the invasion by Russia of Ukraine.
New CNN show:
@JohnKingCNN
travels the world to see how counts work in other countries. First stop: Ireland.
King: Wait, so you count over and over again - not just once? And you do it manually?
Irish person: Indeed.
King:
