It’s a cruel trick of modern life to convince us that everyone cares what we’re doing, all the time; that everyone is deeply invested in how we live and how we identify and how we feel. Seriously believing that is enough to make anyone mentally ill.

What's totally absent from modern mental health advice is trying to be a better person. We talk so much about trauma and correcting chemical imbalances, but never about decency of character. Maybe you feel terrible because of how you're treating the people around you.

Blaming men or women for the problems of modern dating is a distraction. Dating apps teach us to treat each other like disposable commodities. Social media rewards self-absorption. Porn warps expectations. Blame the billion-dollar industries depending on us being lonely consumers

I think a major part of Gen Z's declining mental health is growing up in a culture that has lost the language of defiance. It's become almost offensive to tell someone they can overcome their struggles. We hear endless stories about defeat and disadvantage, never defiance.

I don't know why modern culture looks down on people who live a quiet life. We assume that those chasing constant adventures and new relationships and career changes have the most to teach. But maybe we have the most to learn from people who are satisfied with simple comforts.

I'm starting to suspect that much of the demand for therapy now is not because of an increasingly mentally ill generation but a desperately lonely one. A lot of young people are so starved for human connection that they're paying strangers just to have someone listen to them.

So much of Gen Z's angst comes from excessive self-focus—a vice now endlessly validated and rewarded. We’re encouraged to obsess over our faces, bodies, identities, desires, freedoms, emotions, traumas, symptoms, triggers, lived experiences, all the time. It's making us miserable

The time for excuses and leniency around social media is over. Girls are suffering enough. Now we're unleashing on them deepfake AI that allows anyone to impose their faces onto porn videos. Ban social media for minors. Or the next generation of girls don't stand a chance.

two days ago, an AI image of Taylor Swift being gang raped was posted on here and got 100,000+ “likes,” and I couldn’t help but wonder when these kinds of porn edits were going to be used to torment a girl who would ultimately take her life because of it. it just happened.

Gen Z is in a mental health crisis, but I think a major part of it is the marketisation and medicalisation of our normal distress. This cultural emphasis on treating every emotion we feel as diagnosable and solvable with consumption is doing so much psychological damage.
