To win Smash Summit 12, iBDW beat the following:
- Mango 3-0
- Zain 3-2
- aMSa 3-1
- Leffen 3-2
- Hungrybox 3-1
- Tyler Swift 3-1
- Pipsqueak 3-2
With Mango & Zain, I wanna note that he was previously 0-17 vs. them in the last two years. Congrats, iBDW. Massive underdog win
STORYLINES FOR THE BIG HOUSE 10:
1. aMSa has never won a supermajor. In 21 years of Melee, Yoshi has NEVER won a major. It would be a landmark moments in Melee - IN ESPORTS HISTORY - if he won TBH10. Can aMSa do it?
Okay, I know I've geeked out about iBDW's win being historic, but it LITERALLY just hit me...
Smash Summit 12 was also not only Magi's first ever supermajor top eight...
IT WAS THE FIRST SUPERMAJOR TOP EIGHT APPEARANCE THAT A WOMAN HAS EVER MADE IN SMASH HISTORY LET'S GOOOOO!!!
To win Smash Summit 12, iBDW beat the following:

- aMSa 3-1

I’m not going to comment much on Alan’s latest statement, but I’d like to share some behind the scenes reflections that could shed some light.
Firstly, Alan didn’t believe in Melee. Much of his content team knew he felt that way, and were internally frustrated with it.
I can’t believe aMSa won not once, not twice, but three majors this year. In addition to being a lock for Top 3 in 2022, he’s basically put himself in a group of, like 11 people to ever win 3 majors. If the second half of the year were its own thing, he’d have a case for No. 1
Happy 10 year anniversary to the greatest losers run in SSBM history.
On February 3, 2008,
@C9Mang0
beat Sliq, Mathos, Forward, Cactuar, Azen, ChuDat, Cort, PC Chris and Mew2King (twice) to win Pound 3: his first ever supermajor.
This has to be the biggest upset in Melee history, right? It’s totally unprecedented in terms of characters, reputations of both players, etc.
Unbelievable that the best player in the world can just lose to a DK, and one that wasn’t on many people’s radars
Quick things from winners finals:
1. Was that the first time Leffen ever four-stocked Hungrybox?
2. Per Liquipedia, the Hbox-Leffen rivalry is now tied at 22-22.
3. Leffen's sitting in grand finals at a major for the first time since Super Smash Con 2019, which he won.
I've had enough of watching Hbox/Plup sleepwalk their way through doubles. I'm putting a $1,000 bounty on them. The first team that takes a set will win the bounty. This is a limited offer for the next three majors.
If nobody does it, we should just cut doubles entirely tbh
On December 8, 2013,
@MVG_Mew2King
won Smashacre Frostbite 2013. As in the whole event.
M2K took the top spot in Melee, Brawl, 64, Project M - he also won Melee doubles and Project M doubles. Just another day in the office!
Insane to think there’s 230,000 people watching Ludwig’s Smashboxing event, unironically there will be a big portion of people who get into Melee from this and that rocks
Metagame randomly bringing up PP’s ex girlfriend every now and then without ever talking to her is the perfect encapsulation for how this documentary treats the presence of women in the scene
You know, I’m getting pretty fed up of some squishy Panda sentiment I’m seeing on the TL, so let me unambiguously clear:
The shutdown of Panda was a net good for the Smash scene. I’m sad about the circumstances behind it, but you shouldn’t “want” Panda to come back.
I want an apology from all the people who whined about how a wobbling ban would invalidate ICs and make it impossible to succeed ROFL
SluG’s neutral game in most top tier MUs is literally so miles ahead of every ICs player in the history of the game
Let’s recap for a second. This month, we’ve seen:
1. The biggest circuit ever shut down
2. The other circuit postponed cause its ex-CEO had a Machiavellian plot to take over the scene
3. The most watched Melee set ever (live)
4. The release of ranked matchmaking for Slippi
It’s here, everyone. Here’s my first book, the first book in esports journalism history to cover the history of an entire competitive gaming community - The Book of Melee. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way.
These two sets tell such different stories. Between n0ne, the 17 seed, and Jmook, the 21 seed, this is the “lowest” combination of seeds in a modern supermajor winners semifinals
On the other side of winners bracket, you get Zain-iBDW, the 2 and 3 seeds of the event
When we worked on the All-Time Top 100, Alan initially asked us to include banned players, including ones w/ sexual misconduct cases. I refused. Were it not for other Panda people who internally defended my team, the project might have been killed because of this decision.
SMASH SUMMIT 14 STORYLINES:
1. If he wins Summit, Zain will have /five/ 2022 majors won, the most out of anyone this year. As of right now, for remaining events he’s going to, he's been invited to both Panda Cup/SWT. Will winning Summit lock up No. 1 for the entire year?
Battle of BC 4 is gonna be so exciting. Here's roughly what's at stake for each of its top seeds:
1. Zain continues chasing the title of GOAT Marth, but Summit was a rare setback. Does Zain bounce back and prove he's still the favorite at majors? Or was Summit a sign of a slump?
Aliens have invaded Earth. In order to stop them, humanity must pick ONE Melee player to beat 30 0-2rs (presumably who want to see humanity die) in a row - but they only have four stocks to do it.
Who are we sending out? Zain? Mango? Someone else?
So this is somewhat subjective, but winning Double Down adds a fourth major win to iBDW’s resume. The only people ahead of him now for majors are Hbox, Mango, Armada, Ken, M2K, Zain, Leffen, PPMD, & Azen.
Oddly enough, those players hold the 1-9 spots on the All-Time Top 100.
Here’s the final part of my Top 100 Melee Sets of All Time, featuring my choices for the Top 10, many of which feature
@ArmadaUGS
. Also, download The Book of Melee!
Fun fact about Cody's win at BOBC 6 - with this, per Liquipedia, Cody jumps ahead of Mew2King for all-time major wins.
He's currently at 10, behind Leffen, Ken, Zain, Armada, Mango, and Hungrybox. Pretty wild that he just did this after being sent to loser's so early yesterday
After losing to Soonsay,
@iBDWSSBM
def. Skerzo 3–0
def. Axe 3–0
def. Leffen 3–0
def. Joshman 3–1
def. Mang0 3–1
def. Jmook 3–1
def. Zain 3–0
def. aMSa 3–0, 3–0
That's nine set wins and a 27–3 game record to win Melee at
#BoBC6
! What a run 🦊
This is really sad to see; the specific content of what's said here is unacceptable. If it was said to Magi or another prominent woman, nobody would let it fly.
Genuinely very disappointed here. If you consider what Hbox said here cool, take a look at yourself in the mirror.
a top melee player vulgarly punching down like this is a prime example of what's wrong within the scene. using your platform to say this to a woman in the scene is gross and anyone cheering you on for it is gross too.
Lowkey, Leffen had one of the best performances you'll find from someone who got 3rd at a supermajor. He beat lloD, iBDW, Wizzrobe, Aklo & Jmook
Short of events he straight up won, this is one of his most remarkable runs across a weekend, stellar play through 90% of it
Excited for Summit? I'm jotting down what's at stake for each competitor:
1. In 2021, the MS All-Time Top 100 put Zain at No. 9. Where is Zain if he wins four of 2022's biggest tournaments in a row? Zain is chasing history at this point
Storylines to look out for at Pound today:
1. Zain - having already won LACS & Genesis 8 already, he could distinguish himself even more as a clear No. 1
2. Leffen - huge question mark over the last 2 yrs; we know he can win a major, is the Sheik the answer for him vs. Zain?
Thrilled for the Ludwig Smash Invitational? Here are storylines to follow for each player today:
1. In one of the most surprisingly new challenges for Zain, he's lost his last FIVE sets against top Foxes (Mango & iBDW). Can he snap the streak today vs. iBDW and win the event?
The real news from this is Nintendo’s continued support of Panda. Keep in mind: Panda recklessly used their partner status to worm their way into the major events space, to harm a competing circuit, and to scare other TOs out of ever running unlicensed events.
6. KoDoRiN spent most 2022 reigning over the West Coast and looking Top 10. Lately, he's struggled to balance Melee with his new plant diet and eating ass. How will this nerd-turned-jock recover from holding so many Ws out of the game?
If it isn't clear enough to anyone here: this company does not love you. It will never love you. It would prefer you be a mindless, uncritical & brand-worshiping drone than ever let you try to create anything beautiful if it technically involves its IP
It has now been more than a year since I announced this bounty. Afterward, Hungrybox and Plup have entered 0 doubles tournaments as a duo.
For all the attention this received, and even the "risk" I took in creating this, it completely flopped. LOL
I've had enough of watching Hbox/Plup sleepwalk their way through doubles. I'm putting a $1,000 bounty on them. The first team that takes a set will win the bounty. This is a limited offer for the next three majors.
If nobody does it, we should just cut doubles entirely tbh
I noticed something pretty strange tonight in the bracket of Coinbox: a top-level Pikachu ditto. Couple things:
1. Anyone have a VOD?
2. When was the last time this matchup had ever been played in tourney among two top players?
Not trying to be BM here, love watching both Jmook & moky, but that should have been a 3-1 win for moky.
The winning player is always put in a bad spot: accept a “dishonorable” win or decline, gentleman to play, and possibly lose. The TOs should call that shit every time
GOML 2022 top eight storylines:
1. Jmook attempting to become the first person to win a major w/ Sheik since 2004
2. Zain trying to break a two-tourney stretch of not winning
3. iBDW going for another major, aiming for No. 1
4. Hbox trying to end 2+ years of no major wins
Storylines for Genesis 9 top eight:
1. moky’s shown the ability to defeat multiple ppl in the top echelon, but he’s never actually put it together for the definitive dream run. Will that change today, Can moky put Canada on the map and finally win a supermajor?
The whole point of excluding sexual predators from the Smash scene was that whatever happened to them or was literally none of our business
I'm beyond appalled that so much of the Ultimate scene is staying quiet while its most noteworthy offender gets gifted a softball interview
Inngenn has one of the coolest rises to prominence out of any Melee player I’ve seen in recent history. The dude is younger than Melee and got into it through Slippi, all the way from Japan too. I really hope we see more of him, that was only his third IRL tournament ever IIRC
Doing some research/clip collecting for a project I'm working on, but got distracted. One thing left to another, and I found this old archived post from Mango on the MIOM site
Hard to not feel something in your heart when you see it. How the years fly by
I almost never comment on Twitch chat of large streams because I basically take it for granted I'm gonna see shitty comments here and there. But holy shit - VGBC's chat is highkey the worst chat I have ever seen in Smash - my god LMAO
Insane statistic - that's the first time Leffen's lost to Peach since Beauty 9 in December 2014, where Armada 3-0'd him.
What a tournament from lloD so far, beating the best player in the world and someone I once thought would never lose to Peach again
If you're not Mango or Hungrybox, as far as streaming /Melee/ is concerned, the money you directly earn from it is still pretty low and far from what most ppl associate with being a top player.
For today's column, I simulated Genesis X (projected Top 32) 1000 thousand times. Although I do not think this is too accurate, I did learn the following:
1. Predictions are hard
2. Quantifying what goes into a prediction is even tougher
3. Projected brackets are super important
I’ve been getting rec’d a bunch of old videos on YouTube, and came across this one of Crush vs. lloD from Holiday Bash
To this day, I don’t think an in-game tag has ever made me laugh more than “NNOD” - a totally nonsense version of his opponent’s tag. Crush ended up winning 3-1
It is ridiculous how much people think locals matter. I can say "I'm practicing being fast so I'll be losing more for awhile!" till I'm blue in the face but they just see the results and keep bringing them up. Like yeah I get it lol, can't say I didn't warn you.
I never wanna hear shit from anyone in the Melee scene about how cool it would be if Nintendo and the community ever worked together. Nintendo can fuck off. It literally just ruins everything for us
At one point, he told me that “statistics” should be prioritized in the list over ethics, and that he was worried about the risk that came to Panda’s family friendly brand…with explicit exclusion of predators. It was insanely out of touch.
I think one of the greatest things about Albert beating Hungrybox is that this dude stared at the best player in the world, an open advocate for monitors, and said “yes, I will gentleman-agree to play a Bo5 in Falco-Puff on a monitor setup.”
What a god
21 major first places
4 years of being the world SSBM No. 1
9 years of being Top 5
Thank you for everything you've done in Melee singles,
@ArmadaUGS
! Best of luck in your future; been a pleasure watching you play.
In the end, he lost almost every key figure, tarnished his brand, and left in disgrace. Within Smash, he’ll be a cautionary tale of what happens when you think you know more than everyone & what happens when you reduce others to being means to your goals for far too long.
A common thing I knew from my sources was a begrudging sense that Alan saw Melee as far less grateful to Panda as Ultimate. Though most didn’t agree w/ his skepticism toward Melee, some of this lingering resentment toward the Melee scene was there in the upper levels of the org.
Woooooooowwwwww
n0ne defeats Mango 3-2 at EGLX, becoming the first person to beat Mango with Captain Falcon in a decade (the last one being SilentSpectre)
I'm setting aside $100 to make five big underdog bets for Battle of BC 4. Here's your chance to take me up:
1. Zain is eliminated before Top 8 (25:1)
2. aMSa wins the tournament (20:1)
3. Vish makes Top 16 (10:1)
4. Swift makes Top 8 (5:1)
5. Leffen DQs (3:1)
The Melee Stats team is proud to announce the newest edition of the MSPR: our seasonal Top 25 rankings, this time for the Summer-Fall 2018 period. Enjoy!
2. As the No. 37 seed of this tournament, Soonsay is one of the lowest seeds to ever be in WSF of a major ever. He’s beaten Pipsqueak, beaten Leffen - how much further can he go today?
Giving Alan credit, he ended up listening to them. But that interaction never sat well with me. Neither did him acting aloof, telling me how simultaneously cool and worthless (limited budget) the project would be for his brand, and talking as if I was a nobody wasting his time.
Even then, I have to admit Alan’s response was shockingly bad. In it, he throws his PR team (lmao) under the bus, basically claims SWT ran a false flag operation to curry community favor, and brazenly attacks Hotbid, one of the most important and competent ppl in Smash.
As I’m making coffee for the two of us this morning, my spouse - who barely follows Smash - walks up to me, looks at me dead in the eye and goes “You just got ratio’d by Air Yingling”
It’s gone too far
I think that Genesis 8 legit has the highest level tournament gameplay I’ve ever seen in my life. This is genuinely mind blowing, I feel like the level of play at this event just completely blows everything else out of the water
This is not to say Alan didn’t care about Smash as a whole - clearly he did - but part of his vision was a doubt in Melee’s long term viability. From what I know, it consistently roadblocked his teams. I believe my sources on that matter because I experienced it firsthand.
This was not the only obstacle. We couldn’t acknowledge Slippi in our blurbs. We were told that the trailer for a video (admittedly one called dpad=fnintendo lmao) was a threat to our project, as was the release of the full video on Nintendo’s relationship w/ Smash.
I can't believe how well Joshman has played this weekend. Just a month ago, he got 8-stocked by Leffen in two games at BoBC. That would have broken so many people - but he went from that to beating aMSa/moky/iBDW in the same weekend.
One of the great underdog supermajor runs
The Book of Melee is finally out in paperback edition! If you haven't checked it out, you can buy it from Amazon now. Thanks to everyone who has supported me! Still can't believe it's finally done.
Update: there’s an asterisk on this because of online, but by winning Pound, Zain became the first player to ever win each of the first three majors of the year.
The first! Not Mango, not Armada, not Mango, not Hungrybox, not even Ken!
Zain?
melee storylines aren’t non existent, top 8s aren’t getting worse, commentary isn’t going downhill - you’re just getting old & don’t like that things aren’t what they used to be when you were young
okay sorry but it just hit me that Alan was bringing up the fact that he offered 90K to a major or w/e but the final event apparently had sponsorships worth 2 million dollars. Holy shit dude, if he wasn't taking a bunch of the money himself, where was it going?
Obviously, I was more than willing to die on the hills I’d chosen - my backup was just to publish it on the MS website. But surprise: the skepticism was totally wrong. The whole project was universally celebrated, and from I know of its metrics, it succeeded.
I think Alan truly saw himself as a savior who could bring competitive Smash into the mainstream - but only on his terms, formally weaving Nintendo into the fabric of the whole scene, refusing to accept that not everyone would agree, and risking their independence.
It's so wild that I'm literally watching five hype matches of Melee at the same time while thinking to myself, "wow, I wish they were streaming these other two loser's matches."
I actually can't get enough of the Ludwig event right now; other tournaments plzplzplz take notes
Hey, guys. I wrote a book about professional Super Smash Bros. Melee history. Here's a sneak peak of the Book of Melee, my final tribute to my favorite game.
BTS was one of the most consistently excellent production teams in Smash. I'd go as far to say that I trusted BTS basically more than any other comparable group in the scene.
Very saddened to hear this is what's going to happen now - horrible horrible news
It’s good to want to do things for Smash. It should be encouraged to dream of a future where Smash is “legit”. I don’t even think Alan was greedy. However, he was reckless. He had a pattern of acting like he knew everyone’s best interests in spaces he didn’t fully understand.
Reading through Alan’s statement, I couldn’t help but remember and re-experience the same register of voice, the dismissiveness, the feeling of being talked down to, the presumptuousness. I cannot comment on specific claims, but needless to say, my starting point is not positive.
However, I always look back on that one meeting we had and think about the alarm bells it rang. I privately told many colleagues that working with Panda’s team was a mostly good experience, but that I did not trust Alan himself all.
I don’t get anything from saying this. The company employed many of my friends. I even worked with them. But are we not learning anything here? From what became public in December, Panda’s long term vision was completely at odds with the scene’s values and other community leaders
I'm setting aside $100 to make five big underdog bets for Battle of BC 4. Here's your chance to take me up:
1. Zain is eliminated before Top 8 (25:1)
2. aMSa wins the tournament (20:1)
3. Vish makes Top 16 (10:1)
4. Swift makes Top 8 (5:1)
5. Leffen DQs (3:1)
It's so sick seeing Leffen win Evo in another game. Can't help but feel super happy seeing a top Melee player not only thrive in other games but take home the Evo trophy in one of them
Believe it or not, I am really not trying to “cancel” Alan here. But I do think there’s a pattern of alienating professional conduct. I was reluctant to share this - I didn’t wanna come off as a “victim” or whatever and don’t really see it that way - but it is important.
He finally does it.
@TempoAxe
breaks the mid-tier curse and wins his FIRST EVER MAJOR: SMASH SUMMIT 8! Axe joins 16 other players to ever win a major.
LET ME REPEAT THAT AGAIN: A PIKACHU HAS WON A MAJOR FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MELEE HISTORY!
Something I've been thinking about a ton that makes Smash cool is how people can get reputations from how they play the game even when they aren't top players
Just IMO, a ton of the best stories come from neat mini-legacies that mid-level players have within a small group of ppl
4. Mango, the all time leader in Big House wins, is fresh off his first win over Zain this year. He’s won LTC, he’s won Smash Con, can he win Big House? Is Mango back to being the best player in the world?
WIZZROBE DID IT!!!!
WELCOME TO IMMORTALITY WIZZROBE!!!! With that victory,
@Wizzrobe
has joined 15 other players as the only people in Melee history to win majors, and OFFICIALLY ENDED THE CURSE OF CAPTAIN FALCON!!!
