I saw the protest from the Beehive.
We will vaccinate more people today - in just one day- than turned up to that protest.
Thanks to all who have been vaccinated.
It’s my privilege to have served with
@jacindaardern
and to have witnessed her strength, intellect and humanity as she lead us through the pandemic. Her leadership saved tens of thousands of New Zealand lives.
As a Minister I want to thank Dr Bloomfield for advising the Govt on some of the most important decisions taken in peacetime.
As a doctor I want to acknowledge
@AshBloomfield
as a colleague who has made an unparalleled contribution to protecting the health of New Zealanders.
So humbled to be elected to cabinet and to bring my expertise to our fight against covid. Looking forward to getting to work as Minister for Seniors and Food Safety, as well as Associate Minister for Health and Research, Science and Innovation. Thanks to my labour colleagues!
Long day. Want to thank all the health workers who swabbed, traced, vaccinated their guts out today. Also those doing the “routine” work in community and hospital settings under radically different circumstances. Thank you for your work. We will beat this.
Thrilled to be taking on the roles of Minister for Covid-19 Response and Research Science and Innovation. Really grateful for the leadership of
@chrishipkins
and
@Megan_Woods
in those portfolios. Lots of seniors and health visits planed this week. Lucky to have good work to do.
Just kissed my daughter good night after a tough day in parliament. The coalition govt’s dirty deal has shocked the country. I’ll fight every day to make sure my daughter’s generation is smokefree.
Big heartfelt thanks to our MIQ workers.
Keep holding the line against

Every time you mask up, hand wash, get boosted or distance, you are keeping us safe
Hi NZ twitter how about rather than fighting about health stats that aren't true, we join together in calling for proper health information systems that mean those statistics are available in real time? Just a suggestion from your friendly local epidemiologist and data nut.
I’ve cared for many people who delayed getting HIV or TB tests because of stigma. We can’t afford for people with COVID symptoms to fear the consequences of a test. So let’s not judge people who have done the right thing by getting tested and disclosing their contacts.

Repealing smokefree laws will mean thousands of deaths and billions of health costs. Shane Reti said he supported 2/3 smokefree reforms but now he is scraping the lot. Way to start being health minister - by caving into the tobacco industry.
“It’s a further insult to our tangata whenua by the newly formed coalition Government on top of the loss of Te Aka Whai Ora – the Māori Health Authority.”
Repeal of smoke-free laws – a massive set back for health
Congrats to Prime Minister
@jacindaardern
for a resounding victory in 🇳🇿 general election. Delighted to see my cousin, Ayesha
@drayeshaverrall
also win a seat in parliament for Labour!
Today New Zealand’s covid response is praised in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine and we’re also out in front in the Bloomberg media survey of business leaders executives.
The best health response really is the best economic response.

Today is day 1 in the new job and my first visit as Minister of Health was to Wellington Hospital Emergency Dept.
I worked here as a medical registrar many years ago and I wanted to see for myself the pressures doctors, nurses and allied health staff have been facing recently.
The coalition government is funding tax cuts by repealing smokefree laws. That’s right - they’re raising money by letting more kids get hooked on tobacco. (At 1min:50)
Where is National going to find the money for tax cuts without a foreign buyers tax, and what does Nicola Willis mean by 'trimming the package'?
#NationNZ
When I was a doctor I found it incredibly frustrating that the co-payment stopped some of my patients from getting the medicines they needed to stay well and stay out of hospital. Today's announcement means that three million people will benefit from free access to medicine.
A new telehealth service will remove barriers to accessing abortion. 0800DECIDE will enable people to access early medical abortions, including information, advice, referrals, counselling and consultations with clinicians.
Welcome to the Olympics of vaccination! 🏅💉Starting today at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau City. Our first mass vaccination event will vaccinate more than 15,000 people over the next 3 days.
Horrible sad day at parliament. Multiple fires being fought on the lawn, objects like fire extinguishers being thrown at police lines. What a tough dangerous job police have to do here.
New Zealand is taking a historic step towards our smokefree future.
We will implement bold measures, including banning the sale of cigarettes to future generations, as part of our
#Smokefree2025
Action Plan.
Proof: Shane Jones admits tobacco lobbyist influenced NZ First policy and celebrated with him as new coalition govt was sworn in. A very dirty deal indeed
We’re enabling early medical abortion provision in primary care. Clinicians who undergo training will be able to prescribe subsided pills. This will mean people can access the service from their trusted primary care provider & in a familiar setting.
As I move from medical scientist to Associate Minister for Research Science and Innovation I wanted to speak to my daughter on the importance of
#WomenInSTEM
. This from my maiden speech.
New Zealand’s pandemic response has been globally lauded for saving thousands of lives – and now, a major analysis suggests much of its wider health benefits have been sustained over the long-term
This government is taking New Zealand backwards. The Science City initiative would have driven innovation and economic growth in Wellington. These cuts to fund tax cuts are short sighted.
We’re at an estimated 1504 public servants loosing their jobs because of Nicola Willis’s cuts and she’s disparaging journalists who are covering the story. I get the distinct sense Nicola doesn’t like being held accountable. Nasty.
Luxon saying National committed to
#smokefree
goal while scrapping smokefree laws on RNZ. They can’t have it both ways - they’ve confessed they’re funding tax cuts through repealing smokefree laws. They’ll only get the revenue they need if more people smoke.
It’s hypocritical of Dr Reti to threaten a program that got him his degree.
He should focus on the serious health workforce issues he appeared so concerned about before the election.
A brilliant morning welcoming Labour’s new team of MPs who now make up the biggest caucus in NZ’s history. All passionate, dedicated, smart people who represent the NZ of 2020 in its great diversity.
I’ve come down with cold symptoms. Antigen tests are negative. Still it is important to stay home, which is what I’ll do. Luckily I can zoom into all my covid response meetings today.
Thread: A year ago I was sworn in as a Minister. Here I am at govt house making an effort to say my oath correctly. Soon I’ll sit down and share a fist bump with my new friend Kiri under the table. 1/n
Rheumatic fever is a disease we shouldn't have in New Zealand. It is a disease of poverty and poor housing. To prevent rheumatic fever Labour will expand the healthy homes initiative - a program shown to prevent 1,533 hospitalisations and 9,443 GP visits a year.
New Zealand’s
#smokefree
legislation will save lives and health care costs. Here is the modelling we got on the benefits. Over 8000 lives and $1.4 billion in health care costs saved.
We must stop the repeal of these Smokefree laws.
This comes after the Waikato VC was revealed to have been heavily involved in developing National’s pre election policy on the matter.
These guys are busy doing $380M deals with their mates, without considering what’s the best for the health of Nee Zealanders.
Shane Reti revealed today Waikato University is co-writing the business case for Waikato Medical School with the Ministry of Health.
And Reti won’t commit to the “full cost benefit analysis” including consideration of NZ’s existing medical schools. 1/2
The cartoons, the ‘make cancer great again’ comedies being staged in the provinces, the tik tok and insta roasts. This govt has made its health minister the laughing stock.
Today
@nzlabour
announced our plans to begin universal dental care. I know that removing the cost dental will prevent a lot pain and suffering.

Got my second dose of the Pfizer BioNTech covid-19 vaccine at Wellington Hospital along with a fast moving queue of health workers.
Now my 20 mins observation are up! Time to catch up with some hospital friends at the Friday place...
I've sent this to
@DrShaneRetiMP
(+other doctor gvt MPs).
His decision to support scrapping of smoke-free legislation calls our profession into disrepute and is incompatible with his role as a GP, or any professional association with GP bodies in Aotearoa.
(RT if you support)
few hundred of Ayesha’s Army have turned out at parliament in support of the Smokefree laws … even bigger numbers online with 47,000+ signing a petition
After the coalition government’s dirty deal to scrap our smokefree legislation we need greater transparency of government links to the tobacco industry.
National are now saying a second election is a “very real and growing possibility”.
Only a PARTY VOTE FOR LABOUR will keep New Zealand moving forward, and deliver the stable Government we need.
Thrilled to announce a move that will protect more babies from developing conditions such as spina bifida. We're making it mandatory for folic acid to be added to non-organic, bread-making wheat flour - which could prevent up to 240 neural tube defects over 30 years.
We’re at an estimated 1504 public servants loosing their jobs because of Nicola Willis’s cuts and she’s disparaging journalists who are covering the story. I get the distinct sense Nicola doesn’t like being held accountable. Nasty.
Has he read the thread?
Does he understand what test sensitivity means?
Did he wonder why NZ microbiologist Dr Ussher said he didn’t see a role for this?
Did he imagine South Auckland two weeks later when those who falsely tested negative turn up in hospital?
I want to thank our EXISTING health workers for clearing surgical Waitlists: people waiting >365 days for surgery (non orthopaedic) down from 50,000 at the end of 2022 to 9383 on August 6. Labour isn’t waiting 6 years for National’s fantasy med school to deliver faster care.
We've achieved something amazing in New Zealand through all of our hard work and Jacinda Ardern's leadership. We went hard and early in our health response and now have opportunities for a strong recovery. Let's keep moving.
Fantastic to be back in Otago where I studied medicine. PM and I announced today that Labour will deliver more than 60% additional doctors next term. A fully costed, trustworthy policy with NZ’s future in mind. A vote for Labour is a vote for health
Nats knew about the need to provide ongoing funding for Pharmac b4 the election - see their fiscal plan ⬇️
The “cliff” is <$200M from 2022, not the $1.3B of baseline funding as Luxon suggested this am.
They’re making up excuses for why their budget doesn’t add up.
1/ In this interview
@DrShaneRetiMP
the new NZ Health Minister said there were submissions to the Select Committee that the black market would greatly increase with NZ's smokefree legislation. There were, largely from the tobacco industry.
And the results of that hard work are in: 56,800 vaccinations and 41,400 tests yesterday. Both record days. 🏅5065 contacts in the system and likely 5000 more to be uploaded today.
Long day. Want to thank all the health workers who swabbed, traced, vaccinated their guts out today. Also those doing the “routine” work in community and hospital settings under radically different circumstances. Thank you for your work. We will beat this.
Kiwis across the country are already experiencing the benefits of free prescriptions, with over three million free scripts provided since July!
Yet National is promising to cut this support for the majority of Kiwis.
It’s unacceptable that publicly funded research is locked up behind paywalls.
That’s why the govt will be requiring open access publication of MBIE funded science.
This will give us all better access to knowledge & drive greater impact from science.
For any doubters: The Māori Health Authority plays a vital role in our new health system. It brings a strong voice for whanau in health decision making, and services. Turning around historic inequities in access and life expectancy will take years, but together we will get there.
The last time National said this health funding was frozen, meaning effective health cuts. Doctors and nurses missed wage increases and capital funding was foregone. Sewage ran down the walls of Middlemore Hospital. There is too much at risk with National.
Christopher Luxon was asked a couple of times today whether health and education spending increases would match the rate of inflation, but would not commit to it.
This is a change of position from last year where inflation increases were promised.
Thrilled to announce our ambition to eliminate HIV transmission in Aotearoa and ensure that all people with HIV enjoy a long life free from discrimination.
We can do this!
Today I joined Cantabrians to call for the govt to retain our Smokefree Laws. Smoking kills - and the govts proposed repeal helps nobody but the tobacco industry. Everyone gets it - why won’t the govt keep the law as it is?
We’re adding 830 additional nurse training placements starting from July this year which means nursing schools can open their doors to more students. Today’s announcement is an important step in growing the domestic health workforce.
“All our young people should grow up with a sense of pride in themselves.
Conversion therapy is monstrous.
It is not therapy, it is hate.”
My speech on Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill
The PM’s done us proud at the UN General Assembly. Watch her speech canvassing climate and covid challenges. Her calls for nuclear non-proliferation and to eliminate terrorist & violent extremist content online is the leadership the world needs now. 🇳🇿 🇺🇳
'Put our People over Profit - Stop the Repeal of the Smokefree Legislation!'
We urgently call on the Government to stop the repeal of the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Smoked Tobacco) Amendment Act.

This is nuts! Parliament being asked to refer a list of projects we can’t see. The public won’t get a chance to comment but you can bet the mining companies already have.
Fast track (economic Ministers decide on projects avoiding normal environment protections) bill has landed but the projects are missing - no confirmation that select committee public process will apply to these projects 🤔
#crazyexecutivepower
During the interview with Minister Chris Bishop, we challenged the assertion made by him and PM Chris Luxon that under the previous govt's plans Northland would have only one tobacco retailer. In fact, the maximum allowed number would have been 35
Public private partnerships for hospital builds have failed overseas. Why is the Minister of Health considering them in NZ? And why hasn’t he be briefed on health infrastructure 8 weeks after becoming minister?
Sunday 10km. Rain filled up my shoes like buckets. Lightning ⛈. Dodged being sprayed by cars through surface flooding. Why did I pick this as my hobby?
I came to parliament uncertain how it would work out being an MP and a Mum. What I found was an institution transformed by

to be welcoming of parents & children. The playground the mob burnt today stood for our inclusive parliament & democracy. Let’s build it back.
I’m so sad and angry that the precious playground at Parliament has been damaged.
Let’s fix the people’s playground and make it even better than before!
Please donate a little if you can.

One of NZ's most prominent Pacific health leaders, Sir Collin Tukuitonga, says ...
"I really don't want to work for this government. I have no confidence. They are not going to treat Pacific people well and I want to be free to speak up and speak out."
Is that why it’s Raining Tax Cuts is a gay anthem and there was a police man in The Village People?
Way to show you went to an event and didn’t listen to anyone.
New amazing Luxonism. Pressed on his govt’s review of sex&gender ed, Luxon says:
“Talk to the rainbow community. I’d just say to you, what are they fixated on at the moment? Rebuilding the economy. Restoring law and order. Delivering better health and education.”
From today the majority of prescriptions are free. Proud to see through this policy that will reduce the costs of care and keep people well and out of hospital.
Clinical roles being cut last week now this. Looks like the govts commitment not to cut frontline health services was a lie.
