In the musical Dio also has more of a conscience too since every time he feels awful or does something that is really evil Dario appears and he relates said feelings and actions to his father. It really tortures him and he can’t find any relief from it.

When Dio is being arrested he tells Jonathan that he’s in a prison covered in mud and that he can’t see the stars. The scene where Dio quits being human in the musical is not so much of manic act of realization like in the original story. It’s an agonizing desperate last resort.

You can debate it in the manga and anime but at the very least in the musical I am very convinced that Dio loved Jonathan (he just never realized it until it was already too late) and that's based on how Mamo played him and how some of the scenes differed from the original work.

Honestly this Musical did a lot of good for Phantom Blood, this scene alone just shows the mind and philosophy between Dio and Jonathan and ultimately foreshadows each of their fates. Also foreshadows the last scene of the musical with both of them leaving together.

@Vishkujo I saw the online version with Matsushita playing Jonathan and I noticed the way the says JoJo in the clip with Arisawa is a little different to that one. The one I saw it was more like JoOoOoOoJoOoOoOoOoOo.
