A side effect of working at Valve is the constant and steady flow (every week or 2) of email inquiries from valve manufacturers in China asking if I would be interested in ordering any specialty factory valves, valve actuators, and a whole assortment of valve related products😂
From the archives, first stab at HL2 promo art that we felt wasn't the right mood for Alyx. Used this somber tone for the Gordon street pic instead and gave her more power in the Alyx/Gordon shot. She seemed too chic here too, hence the duct tape/hoodie added to the final.
This has been cooking for a couple years now and I'm super excited for everyone to finally see this!

There was a desire to give her an iconic weapon like Gordon's crowbar, and so the socket wrench was aimed towards that. We never followed through on making it a thing for her in the game though, so it was born and died here in this image.
In the spirit of Half-Life: Alyx, dug up something I did a few years ago for a friend's brother who worked at

Playing around with voxels and they reminded me of the game that started it all for me.
Who played this? King's Quest 3 is when I fell in love with games.

I actually had no involvement in HL:Alyx. It was in very good hands and I purposely avoided seeing much because I wanted to play an HL game as a customer for once 😂 WORTH!
My only disappointment in HL:A was when i picked up a cigarette butt in one hand and a lighter in the other and wasn't able to make the two work together. BUT NOW....
(don't smoke in RL it's bad for you, in VR only your VR lungs get killed)

1/ Today marks 20 yrs working @ Valve. I never thought I would work anywhere that long, let alone my first real job. They took a chance on a no experience kid out of college with no resume and a portfolio thrown in a folder on a server somewhere. It changed the course of my life.
Good morning! It's been around a month since Steam Deck launched, and we've been listening to feedback and pushing updates at a steady clip. Here's a quick look at everything that's been added and improved to Steam Deck since launch!
3/3 Ultimately, we didn't use this to announce the release for other reasons but it's a good example of how something goes from idea to completion and the flexibility to create at a place like Valve.

1/ I was about to write how super proud I was of what the HL:Alyx team did on this game. But I feel like "proud" relays some sort of ownership over what happened. I had absolutely nothing to do with this game, I played it as a customer would, and it blew me away.

- here’s some stuff I worked on from the “Jeff” chapter in Half Life: Alyx. Beware: SPOILERS ahead. First up, some screenshots of the area where we train the player on how Jeff works. I referred to this area as the “training trench” throughout development.

Just realising that I did 0 personal work this year. One of the nice things about working at Valve is the line between personal work and work work is very blurred. The itch is usually scratched pretty quickly.

These are Overwatch Soldier conversion mechanisms. Idea being that once proven in Civil Protection as a Metrocop you get to graduate to be a Combine soldier which involves memory replacement, among other mods. All things that make them less and less human the higher the rank. (λ)
15 years ago today, game designer Arnt Jensen founded Playdead! LIMBO and INSIDE each took six years. Our current project, GAME 3, is even more ambitious. If you're a game maker, appreciate our work and want to live in wonderful Copenhagen, get in touch!
When you set out to establish a pattern people will pick up on, but it will take at least 6-7 years before people would be able to recognize it.

2/ It is amazing from start to finish, and it finishes with one of the most satisfying game endings I've ever experienced. The HL:Alyx team didn't just raise the bar for what a VR game could be, they raised the bar for what digital entertainment could be. Again.
Portal 2 was the first game I deliberately shirked my "everyone should playtest this to make sure we catch all bugs" responsibilities. I wanted to play it fresh.
Worth it! It was amazing.

Noclip into the opening the vortigaunt is extracting that thingy from, the yellow inside backing of that looks like solid yellow, but if you screenshot it and the increase the contrast in photoshop a face should appear. If you have no luck I’ll try tonight.

no 3D render under that. Although it’d be a stretch to say it was COMPLETELY hand drawn. I used a lot of photo sourcing for the water splashes and some metal textures to overlay on different parts of the suit and background.
2/3 We had wanted to announce the wide release with a trailer and after seeing a branding piece by the talented Ben Huen, I did some quick screen captures from the HL model viewer and comped it in After Effects over the audio track of the James Bond: Skyfall teaser.

The goal was to bring in a new theme that was very different from the established themes we shipped with, so the mountainous and snowy set accomplished those goals. We pulled from the Cascades of Valve's home state of Washington which is pretty much the same as what you see in BC
A few hours ago someone @‘d me attaching a Half-life 2 concept drawing I did years ago and haven’t seen since. Before I had a chance to save the image or reply they deleted it and now it’s gone forever…. Please send again!!!

For the record, I was looking for the old files and I found them. Can't open them anymore (old xsi .scn file) but saw one called barnacle_cover. So im less convinced there wasn't a scene I painted over. So im changing my answer to "yes". (so long ago!)
In 1992, 13yo me didn't know what i needed to do to make a game. So I just made mockup after mockup.
Found a box of old floppies with the images. This game was a point/click adventure after I saw a screenshot of Willy Beamish at the back of PCMagazine (still haven't played WB)
