Hey, I'm Devin! I'm a concept artist and illustrator working on video games, I also do mentorships and frequently do tutorials here on twitter!

Thread on color in painting! This will be a 3-part series with everything you ever wanted to know about color. What actually is color, and how do we use it? How come it is so hard to make a painting look natural if we start in black and white and then add color after?
Thread on shadows in painting! Have you ever noticed that darkest part of the shadow right before the reflected light? That’s called the core shadow. Why do they happen, and are they a part of every shadow?
Thread on composition advice! Specifically, triangles and how you can use them. Triangles are a great way to keep the eye moving inside the picture frame, and the uneven number of points keeps the composition dynamic and interesting.
Thread on color part 3! We've gone over a lot of the science, but how do we use all of this creatively in our paintings? How do we make a black and white image look natural? The secret and key to the whole thing is in a property of color called Chroma.
Thread on edges in painting! Hierarchies of value and color in our paintings are so important and a hierarchy of edges adds a whole other dimension. Edges are particularly fun because we can use a mental checklist to sort out which should be hard, soft, and everything in between:
Thread on color in painting part 2! How do we know how to confidently decide on colors in the infinite lighting situations that we can imagine? We’re going to dive deeper this time into how light works, and what determines the color we actually see when light reaches our eyes.
Thread on values in painting!
What do values have to do with Oreo cookies and how are they the secret to good painting? John S. Sargent described it as the secret, and when I read that, halftones seemed like a minor consideration to me. I wasn't even exactly clear what they were!
Tip about edges in painting! Edges are closely related to value. Notice here how the soft edge of the shadow on the sphere is simply a slow gradient of value. This slow change of value tells us that the sphere is round, but it also appears as an abstract shape with a soft edge.
I made a form rendering cheat sheet! Feel free to download for your reference. Being able to identify and group these are so important to painting, and I find that these diagrams can be overly complicated so I made a simple one with definitions and only the most important points!
Thread on highlights! Have you ever noticed when looking at something that the highlight moves around when you move your head? Why does this happen? Why does it only happen with the highlight and not the rest of the light?
Thread on exposure in painting!
How often do you think about exposure when starting? How do we go from a lot of information to something we can actually paint? Organizing values and colors is a big part of successful painting and exposure is a method to plan that out.
🎨Painting tip: Try breaking down a composition as simply as you can, this will help you learn about the underlying decisions that the artist made, rather than just copying the brushwork!
Thread on values! Have you ever had to rely on tweaking levels in Photoshop in order to get your painting to have enough contrast? Here’s how to confidently control values from the very beginning!
What is composition? Composition, at its core, is decision making about relationships. Is your canvas ratio 3:2? Will that be divided in half equally with light and dark? Will half of that dark area be warm, and the rest of the canvas cool? Each of these choices is composition!
Thread on composition! It's not about math formulas or memorizing golden ratios. Contrast provides focal points, and you can arrange these in various ways to create different feelings. Some arrangements create very reliable effects, and you can add these tools to your toolbox!
Studying art should never be about "grinding," this is inherently unsustainable and so often leads to burnout.
It is done out of self compassion, a way to explore your weaknesses so that they can be improved. Knowing that what you have to say with art is worth saying more clearly
Color tip! Keep in mind what colors are intense at what values. Example: red is intense at a middle value, and yellow is intense at a light value, so I knew red in the light and the yellow in the shadow could be part of the same value group. This helps to plan values structures!
Let's talk about one of my favorite paintings and some of the reasons why I think that it works so well: a thread on detail, edges, gesture, composition, and shape design.
The first thing I did when I decided to make art a career in 2013 was to buy a model skull and do a still life every day.
The daily practice led to noticeable improvement, before then I only painted a few times a month. Here's some of those studies from 2013:
New thread on values! What does pixel art have to do with value grouping in painting? It’s all down to a concept I call *dithering*. We are naturally very good at seeing small differences, and this is not helpful for painting, because we need to see differences *between* things.
Cold light, warm shadows, and vice versa, is not a rule! Instead, it helps to keep in mind that temperature is relative, and to think about the temp of the light sources in the environment. It all comes down to reflections!
In this first example, the planes being lit are “seeing” and reflecting a light source that is relatively colder than the indoor environment. In the second, with sunlight, the white light of the sun looks warm compared to the blue influence of the sky. (sunlight is not yellow!)
Tip about highlights in painting and drawing! Highlights show structure in the lit side of an object, and they are just as useful as shadows for showing form.
I wanted to talk about inspiration and daily practice! Here is a thread of a few of my daily sketches from the past couple of weeks. Daily practice is important to keep up what I call a continuity, a narrative that evolves over time naturally with our interests.
What is "soft" light? This just means that the light in the scene is larger than a small point. All light is just light, and as the light source gets larger, from say the open sky, a window, or a large panel, the shadow gets softer. Here's an animation that shows this principle!
If you want to learn more about how values work and about my process, recordings of my 8-week class are currently discounted. I'll put the details below!
Are diagrams like these bad for artists? Will they restrict creativity and and instill a bunch of rules of composition that you have to follow? Are the lines and shapes completely made up? What if I don't get it? A thread. 🧵
Passion and vision in art first, technique and learning second. Don't overprepare by feeling like you need to learn every fundamental to an expert level before you can make art
Here is a tip about values for working from life, find the big relationships first! Here was my first step in this painting, with a foundation like this the small changes like blending and gradients fit well within the overall impression and the parts then relate to the whole.
Thread on drawing in art! If drawing conjures images of line art, pencils, and sketchbooks, try thinking of it in a broader way. When I redefined this term for myself, it gave me a much clearer idea of how to study art and allowed real breakthroughs to happen while practicing.
Thread on finishing paintings! What does it mean to finish or detail a painting? What does the word rendering even mean? Here's a thread on 3 different strategies for finishing work, when to know that it is "done," and the pitfalls we might encounter along the way.
