I think my resolution for 2024 will be to depart this place properly - I now officially have too many tabs to check. You can contact me at deirdre.oshaughnessy /at/ for work purposes, I'm on LinkedIn, Threads, and Facebook.
I spent years researching the Rwandan & Cambodian genocides. All the personal testimonies, international court of justice cases, books, newspaper articles, promises from the "international community"... there is no such thing as "never again". Here we are, again.
Grand total of €19.10 on a one4all card I got for €50 in 2019. Allegedly valid til 2023. Please don’t buy these for people they are a complete waste of money
Watching
#SexEducation
on Netflix and it's a bizarre mix of UK and US stuff. English accents, US landscape, English teachers, US school setting with football jackets etc... I feel SO culturally confused RN
Resorting to to check the plumber is still alive three months after he half fixed the heating and stopped replying to our messages is a new experience…
Some news.
I’m delighted to be joining the

Might be worth reminding people that lots of ordinary people in Tuam, people she knew, told Catherine Corless to shut up about the babies and leave it all alone. In 2014.
My Mam
@ancearc
was one of a kind & the kindest person I ever knew. She loved words, stories & people.
She loved mischief & fun & trying to embarrass me. She was wise.
She was the best mother I could have asked for & a fantastic granny to our boys.
Goodbye Mam.Always with us ❤️
Put children to bed, at great length.
Went for customary “date night”.
(This constitutes a walk, together, to the bottom of the driveway to put out the bin. Takes about four minutes.)
Returned to house.
Two tearful faces in the hall: “we thought you left us”.
Lads.
Complaining about having nowhere local to hold a communion because it’s housing women and children fleeing conflict suggests to me that people aren’t quite getting the message of Christianity… but what would I know
Introducing Oscar. Arrived just after 2am Thursday at CUMH (thankfully) & we were home safe within 12 hours thanks to their amazing Domino scheme - coincidence we were watching

when contractions started?!

I’m not normally one for the vague needy posts but if you could see your way to lighting a candle or sending some good karma, or prayers to whatever deity you believe in, in the direction of UHL tomorrow I’d appreciate it.
Imagine being inside that centre, looking out the window at this, after fleeing a war zone or being persecuted for being LGBT, or running from an arranged marriage or from FGM.
Cancelled broadband contract this morning - to take effect on August 10th to allow move to new provider. With remarkable efficiency they cancelled it immediately and now we have no tv or internet. I invite you to guess who our provider was. Just guess. One guess will do you…
Am in hospital with small boy and staff are telling me they’ve seen loads of kids with serious E. coli this year because of all the sea & river swimming. If we’re going to be encouraging people to staycation we should probably make sure the place is fit for purpose...
Prediction: Leo will appear on the Late Late Toy Show wearing Christmas socks to reveal the restrictions are lifting, around the same time Micheál is standing, alone, outside Govt buildings to make the announcement.
"How will kids react when we tell them they can't trick or treat?"
Eh lads, kids have been here this whole time. They're small, not stupid.
They will react the same way as they did to all the other things they can't do because of
#COVID
.
Little bit of cuteness for your Saturday night. We have a gorgeous Ukrainian family sharing our home at the moment, including a lovely 12 year old girl. My boys made her a picture today and wanted to know how to spell “sister” 😍❤️😭
My friend, a teacher, was still hiding the fact she lived with her boyfriend from the parish priest (chair of BoM) in 2012 in case she didn't get a permanent contract.
52 hours after being triaged, 40(ish?) after getting a trolley, 100+ tweets, 1 email of complaint to the CEO, many phone calls, Dad has a bed in UHL.
I’m conscious of the platform I have. This is happening to people every day who don’t have that. It’s not good enough.
36 hours now. Given no food between 8pm & 10am (while everyone else got supper and breakfast) because he was "fasting" waiting to see a dietitian. There is no dietitian service in A&E. Patient advocacy manager tells me he will have a bed this afternoon.
Not asked for vaccine passport in Cafe Sol Bishopstown and neither was anyone else while I was there. When I raised it the lady came and checked mine and my friend’s… and nobody else’s. Not great.
4 year old was talking to his Granny today. Asked him did he have a good chat: “I did. Your mother seems to be in great form”...
Anyone hiring? We might skip the school bit altogether.
Listening to the Clonmel principals on the radio, they really deserve to be commended on how they have leapt into action. Ready for the media, ready to support the students, ready for going back to school for everyone else tomorrow... I hope there is someone minding them too.
Elderly family member with chronic condition went into UHL by ambulance yesterday early. Still on trolley. We don’t even expect a bed any more.
Don’t fucking talk to me about coalitions, nobody cares what your party fortunes are. We care about getting the services we pay for.
My Mam wanted her ashes scattered at a particular beach in West Clare, specifically in October.
I’m fairly sure she knew well there would be thunder, lightning and hailstones.
She’s definitely here today! ❤️⛈
Yesterday a nurse rang the show to complain that teachers are “sitting at home on full pay” and said they should be redeployed to the front lines to risk their lives like she is.
Don’t be that guy.
Deliveroo should be banned.
Yes, cycle safety is a huge issue here.
But allowing "disruptors" create a whole new underclass of precariously employed people, mostly migrants, to be exploited is like ripping up every employment law we have.
Why is it being allowed to continue?
Thread. Dad got a trolley after 13 hours waiting. He’s been on it now since 3am. All he needed was a blood test & IV antibiotics. Should have been GP -> non-acute hospital.
Why are we funnelling EVERYONE through one exhausted emergency doc? 145 patients in UHL A&E last night.
Family member very ill in UHL. Excellent (and VERY unusually speedy) care, mostly by doctors and nurses from India, Asia and Africa. Where would we be without them?
Events management companies with no work in every county. Why weren’t they contracted by local authorities to manage an outdoor summer, free to the public, with adequate security, waste management, as part of a *plan*?
I also want to mention publicly the incredible kindness and compassion of the staff in the ICU at
@ULHospitals
. It takes a very special kind of person to do that work and we are so lucky that they made Mam’s stay there and her death peaceful, respectful and dignified. Thank you.
I was in a shop this morning that sells plastic plants for €400. Apparently there is high demand for them. I wouldn’t mind but I bought the real version of this plant for €20 in aldi and it’s practically impossible to kill. What’s going on lads?
Michael Healy Rae owns a bit of the company profiting from the direct provision centre in Cahirciveen, but Eamon Ryan is in trouble for quoting someone *too* directly about their experience of racism?
Ok...
Workman cursed in the presence of almost 4yo today, stopped, apologised.
Child: “it’s ok, I know those words. I just pretend not to know them”, hands in pockets, saunters off.
He’s either going to be a politician or the greatest criminal mastermind Ireland has ever known
Feeling very sad today for all the people missing huge milestones. Primary schoolkids not being able to say goodbye to their schools, weddings being cancelled... it's all just very hard, isn't it?
The doctor on
@drivetimerte
now talking about witnessing an orphaned eight year old Palestinian girl dying alone of her burns, with no pain relief, in the corner of a crowded A&E… this is a stain on all of us
#genocide
The abuse
@BootstrapCook
is getting is vile. Her work has made me think really differently about the detail of food poverty and how we engage with it - it wouldn't have *ever* occurred to me to include the energy costs in how much a dish costs somebody to make.
By the way, Dublin media, the woman who was sleeping on a beach in Youghal earlier this summer with her nine kids is still homeless. Just so you know. From hotel to B&B to tent and back. No home. But it’s not in Dublin is it?
Conor McGregor invited to march in the Chicago parade, Shinners bearing stupid, divisive slogans in the New York one... Irish America is not reflective of the vast majority in modern Ireland. Embarrassing.
I just saw a sign on a car that read “babaí ar bord”. Regardless of the merits of these yokes (it’s fine to crash into people with no children?) what language is this supposed to be? Babaí wasn’t the Irish for baby last time I checked and doesn’t “ar bord” mean on the table…?
Just the 12 hours waiting now in A&E. Glad I’ve made so many new friends. I think by the time we leave here it’ll be like Irish college, we’ll all be crying and promising to write to each other. My dad still hasn’t seen a doctor though.
Listening to the middle aged (sounding, anyway) chairman of a Board of Management of a small rural Catholic school defending a boy's right to wear a skirt if he wants to is something that would have been UNIMAGINABLE a couple of years ago. It's astonishing. And so refreshing.
Someone organising a very large event contacted me today asking me to host panels. No budget… for this very large event. If you can’t afford to pay people for their work, you can’t afford to run an event.
The dog went to the vet at 2pm, has had bloods taken, results returned, been given anti inflammatory and antibiotic injection, and a prescription. I really don’t understand why humans can’t get this level of service!!
Eoghan Murphy says there is no silver bullet to solving the housing crisis. Guess what, there is! BUILDING PUBLIC HOUSING WOULD SOLVE THE HOUSING CRISIS
It occurred to be the other day to wonder about all the people who are trapped at home with somebody abusive. School is a great escape for a lot of kids. This is a terrible time for them.
Neither of my children has slept past 5.57am for a single day in the past year.
Until today.
When they slept until 7.20.
Making EVERYONE late.
Happy September
Shout out to the lovely Georgi in
@Aldi_Ireland
’s Elysian branch who packed up my shopping for me because the baby was crying. And the nice lady who told me he was lovely then hoped I was doing well myself.what could’ve been a v messy stressful shopping trip was made really nice.
Listening to the parents of poor Vivienne Murphy on the radio and I can't believe THREE GPs didn't realise how ill the child was when she was unable to produce a urine sample.
In other HSE related tweets, I have to say thanks to the absolutely wonderful staff at CUMH and particularly the brilliant Domino midwife team. Our newest addition Donncha is settling in really well ❤️
Love this “I think he might want to withdraw his remarks about the significance of a credit union meeting in Kerry because I can’t think of any more important organisation than a credit union movement and it is as important in Kerry as it is anywhere else,” Mr Higgins.
Some good news today. Two friends - one in homeless accomm, one in a DP Centre - have been housed in the past two weeks. There is movement happening, somewhere. I’m so happy for them and their families. Gardens! Their own washing machines!
There is an American guy working in my local shop. This morning at 9am I was there buying papers and I heard him trying to give a Ted Lasso style pep talk to a young colleague. At 9am on a Sunday. It didn't go well. I'm not sure Irish people are receptive to pep talks?
Small boy tells me there was bunting and decorations at the vaccination centre in North Main St for all the kids getting jabbed. Vaccinator asked him about his Ninjago jumper & security guard waved as he left. Thanks to those in the
@HSELive
who made it a positive experience.
Himself brought the boys out to the market this morning solo. In 100m between carpark and market he counted 9 “fair play”s and “oh good man you’ve your hands full there”s. This has never happened to me. And I normally bring the dog as well!!
Baby came home in another kid’s socks yesterday. By mistake, obviously.
Today the other mother pointedly asked me for them back.
I can find... one.
These socks are only available in Germany, you know.
THIS... I don't know how many middle aged, middle class men I have heard sneer at "single mothers" for "refusing" council houses. This is why. A house is no good to you if its location keeps you unemployed and isolated
I read something on twitter last night that said the song that's number one on your 14th birthday defines you for life.
What's yours?
Mine, I am somewhat aghast to report, is Chocolate Salty Balls.
Relative just got her very sick toddler out of UHL where she’s been all week. You can’t pay the carpark with a card and there’s no ATM in the building.
Seriously.
Does anyone use their brain?
@HSELive
Just found ourselves explaining to 4 year old that no we never went to cafes for a hot chocolate at his age because... there were no cafes in rural ireland? There was no such thing as a takeaway hot drink? We weren’t MADE of money? So many reasons
Happy Monday to everyone who didn’t start the day by discovering the dog has been doing sneaky poos in the spare room for possibly quite a while now.
Anyone want a dog?
The Shelbourne Hotel will be removing its revolving doors (Revolving doors have been in place at the Hotel since the early 20th Century) due to a series of compensation claims 🙄🙄🙄 - the Government need to get an urgent handle on this pathetic compensation culture.
More than a year after a hip replacement I am still consistently shocked at the freedom I have now.
Being physically able to bring the kids swimming, and afterwards hop on a train to *walk across the city* to meet someone is an unbelievable privilege.
Two weeks today since my Mam died. I got the phone call mid-highlights to come to the hospital, 2.5 hours away. The lovely people at
@CarolineBell79
looked after me so well that day & wouldn’t even take money. Those moments of kindness are so important.
I’ve an email from Brown Thomas urging me to spend my loyalty points before they expire... hmmm... so much excitement... what will I spend my riches on?! This €1.35 is going places baby!
Does everyone else have a hypothetical thing they would buy if they won the lotto that they have detailed plans for but are never actually going to do because they never do the lotto?
