in 2006, i interviewed one of the first people subjected to this tactic. one night, his landline -- which had been deactivated for months due to unpaid bills -- suddenly rang. it was the army telling them to get out. the line went dead again, the bomb fell minutes later.

when i called a friend in gaza this morning he sounded shaken as i said hello. later in the call he told me that my number came up as unknown (i was using skype) so he was sure that it was the israeli military calling to tell him they were about to blow up his home.

people are always surprised to learn that aid trucks never actually enter the gaza strip. rather, goods are unloaded at crossings and reloaded onto another set of trucks that never leave gaza. this "back-to-back" system is extremely cumbersome, costly, and wasteful by design.
