The horrible tragedy that happened on the NY subway over the weekend like so many things is being exploited to argue for a greater police presence, but there were two cops *on the platform*, police is not the answer
In my experience, the camps are largely snacks and art making until the cops show up. They are literally creating the problem they claim to be solving.
the funniest thing about the Yale protests is it was located SO OUT OF THE WAY, by the rare book library with passages left clear. But they arrested a bunch of kids without cause this morning and now it’s in the middle of a central intersection.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS LEVEL OF POLICE PRESENCE, AND TO AMASS THEM REACTIVELY TO PROTESTORS IS DANGEROUS HYSTERIA ON THE PART OF THE MAYOR & POLICE
As 100s of students were arrested for exercising their right to p/assembly in support of
#Palestine
, I remind
@Columbia
to respect academic freedoms and student’s fundamental rights. The right to p/assembly is key for people to speak out against injustices& to mobilise for
#peace
BREAKING: At Columbia, public safety officers just kicked out students from their classes and are locking down buildings. NYPD assembling outside university gates as 100s of students and faculty prepare to defend the camp.
#escalate4Gaza
WATCH: Among those arrested today were Noelle McAfee, Chair of the Philosophy Department at Emory University.
I’ve asked for a comment from Emory on this arrest, no word yet.

@ATLNewsFirst
so much sadness but at least once every few hours “bonk bonk bonk” pops into my head and it makes me laugh
Cal Poly Humboldt you have truly given us a gift 🙏
so fucking sick of the liberal “kids are just doing it because they think it’s cool” takes. remember when Gloria Steinem said women were just supporting Bernie to meet boys? This is the liberal playbook.
My basic model of student protests is that in general students don't know shit about what they're protesting against, they do it because it's cool, makes them feel like they're part of something important and they want to be with their friends.
In the vast majority of cases,…
No law review article has proven more fruitful, offering new insights and perspectives each time I read it, than Cheryl Harris's "Whiteness As Property" -- a truly transformative piece of scholarship.
I just got a bill for $617 for a covid test that was apparently sent to an out of network lab, and I can’t even tell which tests the charges are coming from. I feel like I’m gonna throw up. 😭🤮
Amazon now has some 400 full-time economists on staff, several times as many as a typical research university. Meanwhile, last year Uber hired a fifth of Harvard University’s graduating PhD class
so I was walking back from the park when I saw a relatively young girl walking determinedly alone. I have seen enough kids not want to walk WITH their parents that I didn't think much of it. But I scanned and scanned and couldn't see anyone she could even possibly be with.
if you are wondering when immediate suspension of students for peaceful protest became a thing, me too! I guess just when those protests started being about Palestine
What happened at Columbia was reprehensible, but it’s STILL HAPPENING at CCNY and they are looking for legal observers and support if you can make it uptown!
not to be a total dick, but the dissents do absolutely feckin’ nothing except possibly persuade people to stay invested in the court as an institution.
We have created a world so painful and full of death, so impervious to the desperate cries to stop the slaughter, that it makes total sense to me how you could convince yourself this was the only way you could be heard.
Don’t let the media silence Aaron Bushnell, FREE PALESTINE
I'm thrilled to share with you the amazing articles that make up the SAQ Issue on Law and the Critique of Capitalism that I had the pleasure of putting together. It brings together an incredible group of LPE scholars, Marxist scholars, & political theorists engaging with law 1/x
don’t get me wrong, the National Parks posters are great (esp the Dorothy Waugh ones) but I feel like people are really sleeping on the Lester Beall Rural Electrification Administration ones
did not expect this to get so much traction but I guess everyone is just so sick of more cops being offered as the solution. if you think we should be funding care not cops, please considering joining or supporting
@nycDSA
efforts to
#defundnypd
on occasion of his 90th birthday, Jameson on how from Palestine to gentrification to zoning in American small towns "in our time all politics is about real estate; and this from the loftiest statecraft to the most petty manoeuvring around local advantage."
I did what literally any fucking adult who noticed would have done, but also holy shit make sure your kids have your phone numbers memorized, and also if a kid looks lost ask them because I almost didn't
so wishing that just a tiny fraction of the impassioned US college students for Palestine could take time to camp out & vociferously protest against our fatally corrupt Supreme Court; on the issue alone of Roe vs. Wade, why don't more young people care? US future belongs to you.
as someone who has spent a lot of time outside the gates the past few days, I can assure you I and 99% of the people who are out there are neither professional anarchists nor antisemites
The proofs for the SAQ issue came today and I feel super humbled to have been able to bring together this incredible group of scholars. Get excited, issue out in April!
for everyone who is asking pro-Palestine students why they haven't officially condemned every dumb thing someone did at a protest, have you all condemned Shai calling a bunch of students "actual terrorists"??
No matter how many weekends you work there are still no jobs in academia. It’s a structural problem, don’t let them make into one about personal sacrifice
NOW: NYU students have established a new ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment’ after NYPD swept their first encampment in Gould Plaza
Hundreds of UAW members and supporters marched to the encampment
**to be clear, the director of the history museum was on the line with the dad when I called because that is where the child got lost, not related to the director
I am so pleased to see the memefication of Shai Davidai in ways that are completely and totally divorced from anything to do with Israel-Palestine because I know he would hate it so much. I think he likes being the villain, my guess is 🤡 less so
not realizing that her parents weren't with her and then just kept moving forward. We waited for about 15 minutes for them to arrive and seeing the fear in their faces was one of the most terrifying things i have ever vicariously experienced.
BREAKING: NBC News reports that 'President Joe Biden has privately expressed concern that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to drag the U.S. more deeply into a broader conflict'
and so I stopped and asked her and she said she didn't know where her parents were but miraculously knew her dad's cellphone number, which I called only to have the director of the Natural History Museum pick up. Apparently she was 7 and had walked out of the museum
there is no other excuse. and if you set up a situation in which you are inflicting an unmonitored NYPD on your students after they have been vilified in cop papers like the NY POST, you are directly putting your students in serious danger.
LET THE OBSERVERS IN!!!
Does anyone actually think neoliberalism means a reduction in state capacity/withering of the state? I just feel like it is the strawman anyone working on neoliberalism (myself included) sets on fire in the first few paragraphs. The stakes are in what comes after that negation
I know it won't, but what this SHOULD DO is cause literally everyone who has supported Israel to question all of the claims Israel has made about why it bombed hospitals, schools, refugee camps, journalists, etc.
Israel’s Ambassador to UN:
“We always knew that Khamas hides in schools we just didn’t realize that it’s not only schools in Gaza it’s also Harvard, Columbia and many elite universities”
the fairytale of Scalia and Ginsburg’s friendship is at its heart a story about class and elitism triumphing over everything. the palling around of the professorial elite with people whose politics they claim to hate is the same story.
for all the media likes to talk about Yale Law School, nobody every talks about the fact that the crest is a dancing dog, some giant staples, and an alligator
The President doesn't get credit for being "privately enraged" when he still refuses to use leverage to stop the IDF from killing and starving innocent people. These stories only make him look weak.
Making ever clearer that even if the liberals had a majority, the courts would never save us. Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson all side with big oil.
time to give up the ghost of the Warren Court and see the Court for what it is
BREAKING: In a huge blow to the rule of law, the US Supreme Court today let stand Chevron's prosecution and 3-year detention of me after helping Indigenous peoples win the historic Amazon pollution case.
Gorsuch dissented: "Our Constitution does not tolerate what happened here."
israel has killed more aid workers in the tiny gaza strip than have died in all of the countries in the rest of the world combined in any of the last 30 years
I am lucky enough to have private medical insurance that just f*cked me over, but the US government is choosing to abandon millions of uninsured people to this situation this week just on the crest of another wave. It doesn’t have to be this way.
People keep saying “what about legacy admissions?” Sorry friends but the court is never gonna be the mechanism that gets in the way of the reproduction of class 🙄 We’re gonn have to do that one ourselves
My mom worked as the social worker for Meals on Wheels in Asheville for past two decades—it was a job she loved and was deeply committed to. And so we are asking that rather sending flowers or food that folks would donate in her memory to the Asheville Meals on Wheels
Palestine has to be part of your politics or you have absolutely no business calling yourself “left” or “progressive” — it genuinely blows my mind that this is an issue of contention
NOW: Columbia University faculty link arms and form a wall in front of the entrance to the ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment’ as hundreds of students encircle the both lawns
Students remaining in the encampment were told they could face disciplinary action after 2PM
NYU threatening suspensions of students still at the encampment today, rumors of another wave of arrests at Columbia at 2pm today. If you live in NYC and want to show solidarity with these brave student, NOW would be a good time to do that
New York University constructing a border around sites of popular support for anti-Zionism. All the walls will fall, free Palestine, end the genocide of Gaza, and may the students be victorious
I am also someone with resources and legal training and so I can likely find the time to challenge or get this reduced but that is a position of extreme privilege. And even from this place it makes me feel physically ill to contemplate what fighting the insurance system takes
it's shocking that in the articles relaying that a 13 year old child was shot with his hands up how quickly the narrative changes to how the city is bracing/preparing/preventing looting.
it's disgusting and heartbreaking
the pandering emails from
@lyft
abt abortion access are infuriating. More than ever before the recent decision made access to abortion a class issue — if you have wealth, you you have options. If you don’t, you don’t
So instead of a symbolic $1 million donation PAY A LIVING WAGE
🚨NEWS: House Dems just joined Republicans in passing legislation that would give a second Trump administration unilateral power to punish any nonprofit groups it deems to be "terrorist supporting organizations."
The bill is now moving to the Senate.
my mom was a truly magical human, everyone who met her loved her, and I will do a proper remembrance of her at some point but it just hurts too much now
the gofundme’s from Gaza are so heartbreaking, what they have been through is more than I could ever imagine, I wish I could give to all of them but I can’t and so I make arbitrary decisions which feels bad.
Are you interested in LPE but smart enough not to give into the parental pressure to go to law school? Then this one's for you!!!
Night School will introduce non-lawyers to LPE themes in 5 sessions (intro, labor, housing, race, gender, and the courts)!
“Capitalists and the state are not a cohesive team colluding to oppress opposing teams; instead, the basic social architecture of capitalist society makes only undesirable outcomes possible.”
Everyone NEEDS to read
