On Nat’l Signing Day, cheers to all walk-on recruits including the most famous in CFB history I.M. Hipp of Nebraska. Evaluation is only an opinion, not a fact. Talent Evaluators are Not Equal. In August labels won’t matter. Only Performance !
In 1994 I had the privilege of meeting Jim Brown who was generous with his time. A great athlete and football player who stood up for what he believed in.
@MrsT106
@JennaEllisEsq
Met your Dad in 1988 when UNLV played at U of AZ where I coached FB. I was UNLV BB fan growing up in 70s. Asked if I could come to hotel to meet him. He spent 2hrs talking to me about coaching. 1st Class! Never forgot!
@CoachPCJ
Coach, you're record speaks for itself. The option is a great weapon to compete and have success. At UVA in 1984, working for George Welsh, we employed it and it helped us go to the first ever bowl game in school history. Ga Tech has a long way to go now.
@KChism_
Agree 100%! The philosophy of the line play, stance, get off, splits, techniques, drills, and teaching make the difference! Yeoman, Bellard, and Switzer were innovators. It takes courage to be different, and challenge the status quo. Harding proves it year after year.
@JerryRatcliffe
As a former George Welsh GA in 84/85, we won with a strong commitment to a downhill running game. It fostered a tough program and helped the defense. Teams that win the rushing yardage battle on Saturday win 75%+ of the time. Ball Control Offense can Win today.
@Barry_Switzer
@OU_Football
Coach, you’re exactly right! The Oklahoma Wishbone would win today. 300 yards rushing, controlling the ball, and protecting the defense wins a lot of games.
@ReportOption
Harding U still runs triple under center 💯 , rushes for 300, they adapted to not cutting earlier, top D2 program, this isn’t about rule change, it’s professional IMO, where is the NCAA proof that those specific blocks caused injuries? Go learn from Harding, no change @ AF
My former boss, great person, recruiter, coach, evaluator of talent and innovative! U of Arizona has never been the same. BTW, the staff had Sundays off and he still became winningest coach in history! The Friday morning meetings in season reviewing 300 recruits Legendary !
@geoffschwartz
Notre Dame did not manage the clock well on offense either. You have to make people burn timeouts. Clock stops after 1st downs in last 2min, got tricky after gashing them with basic run . Had to keep running the ball.
@APlayersProgram
Coached for Dick Tomey in 88. Coach Olson locker was next to mine in the coaches locker room. Great person, First Class. Bear Down! A Legend!
My mentor, great coach, first class program, watching NBC Historic Penn State Fiesta Bowl victory over Miami and how we won with Field Position, Kicking Game and Defense!
@CoachPCJ
I hope you coach again. College football needs the Flexbone, Wishbone, Houston Veer , and I Formation back on the national stage. It would be great to see quality blocking again.
Congrats to Dick Vermeil for HOF, the coaching job he did in Philly was best ever in NFL history. I am proud member of Vermeil coaching tree, having coached for Dick Tomey at Arizona !!!
@DickVermeil
ND is a niche job. Academic Restrictions. Holtz 88 team had diverse offense. I Power& Wishbone Option,/Parseghian won NT with Wing-T. ND must be different. Must be a top rushing offense. Won’t likely out spread top spreads.
@RyanClarkDH
@CoachLouHoltz88
It’s no secret that the “expectation is to win every game you play here” when you’re
@ndfootball
, but the harsh truth is that they haven’t won a championship since 1988.
@Marcus_Freeman1
knows it’s a process to create the culture he wants, but sometimes the process ain’t
At Arizona under Dick Tomey, we ran the Wishbone/Run and Shoot from GA Southern, the forerunner of the NAVY Offense, lesson for Arizona football, hire people and recruit people who want to help Arizona win.
Ok, so let me get this right. All HS players are evaluated on their HS HUDL tape. Comparisons made. Offers made. But practice tape is needed from college? What was the original evaluation?
Thanks
@Realrclark25
. And to be clear, I doubt that
@DeionSanders
is keeping transfers from accessing film, that’s not the man I know. Sounds like some false narrative.
@bwizgins
💯 Barry! Downhill running with the Wham and Option football out of 2-Back I formation! Practice with intensity and toughness. You were big part!!
@coachbillcurry
No reason to change! Heard you at the GW Celebration of Life at UVA, was GA at UVA 84/85 and Penn State 86/87. Played you 3 times, we had big win in Atlanta, you had big win in 87 at Penn State, Bobby Humphrey big game! Thanks for your Leadership!!
As the
@USFL
starts up again-The last USFL Championship Game at Giants Stadium was between the Baltimore Stars & The Oakland Invaders. It ranks as one of my favorite sports memories because I went to the game with my brother, my Dad & some guy named Joe DiMaggio.
As a former PSU GA in 86/87, checking PSU football record history, JVP beat OSU in 78,80,94,97,99,01,05,08/
Michigan in 94,95,96,08,09,10
Tom Bradley beat OSU in 11
“Joe didn’t beat them either”is inaccurate .
@JamesALight
@OLSHIFFER
Frank Spaziani taught this for George Welsh in 1984. Watched it first hand on practice field . “The more things change, the more they stay the same”.
I’m my opinion there is simply no substitute for coming off the football. Changing the line of scrimmage will win you a lot of football games! Better buckle up that chin strap!!
#flatbacknation
@CoachMcNallyOL
Completely agree!!! Watching Tackles on an island with no TEs or chip, lack of max pass pro, run/pass ratios, and overall quality of game, it’s all the same. The prep needed today for diversity of blitzes due to all the open Formations is a lot. No consideration for OL.
Since it is NFL draft day, the

photo of the day is my

mini helmet signed by John Mobley. He was a first round draft pick in 1996, 15th overall. Signed for me on the day if his enshrinement in the D2 hall of fame.
@dhglover
The best test of quickness and power is the 10 yard. During the great run of Nebraska football, they evaluated their athletes based on the 10 under Boyd Epley and Tom Osborne.
@GroundStrikeO
@ReportOption
All need it! Nebraska/Colorado greatest success involved option! Nebraska lined up in I and ran freeze option vs Ohio State for gain of 8. Still works.
@JohnFina
John, When did you flip over to OL at Arizona? In fall of 88 when I was there, where you a true, or redshirt freshman? Do you believe that DL guys drafted in the 4th round could be flipped over after college? They are likely better athletes than late round OL .
@bwizgins
@IAmBallHawk
Yes, Barry he would have. He always took points. The end of game sequence was not good however. The George Welsh teams were well coached, well Disciplined, and didn’t beat themselves.
@CoachTroyTaylor
The design of the Schnellenberger system is as good as anything taught today. The spacing , route combos and protection concepts develop QB success.
@CoachHand
@CoachTroyTaylor
@CoachMcNallyOL
Joe Bugel has 3 Super Bowls and a legendary name for his guys. Counter Trey became football lexicon. A very strong candidate. Plus he clerked as the OL coach for Woody Hayes.
Agree 💯! Coach Niumatalolo will look back and realize that capitulating to others or status quo offenses in CFB was a mistake. Would have been better to combine Flexbone with Switzer Wishbone and Osborne I-Option schemes and principles.
@Barry_Switzer
@CoachPCJ
Steve Smith fought ALS valiantly. One of the toughest guys to ever wear the Blue and White and a man who fought this longer than anyone could have ever expected. Heart goes out to his family — a family that was in this fight with him every day,
Great Coach, he along with Howard Schnellenberger and Bill Arnsparger were from the Paul Brown , Blanton Collier system. Great teachers and system. Would win today!!
@ReportOption
Maryland would serve themselves well to study what Bobby Ross did. Had multiple NFL QBs, and tough rush offense in pro-style approach. Or early Friedgen who mixed pro-style with Flexbone and went to Orange Bowl
We’ve coached 13 years together but this is one of only a few pictures we’ve ever taken. I’ve learned more from this man than I ever thought possible, but more important than that, he’s family. The GOAT!
@JumboElliott76
@exGOPer007
@OLSHIFFER
Agree, he is a great coach. The intersection of coaching and player talent is what makes a great system. Re-inventing their offensive system based on the next QB is the challenge now. Parcells, Gibbs, and Walsh all adjusted to player strengths and abilities. So did Bo.
@Ryan__Ward32
Great ! As you can see he could throw, run and was a leader! I also played basketball, when we played at CB West my senior year, your Dad waited after school until our bus arrived, so that he could meet me. I thought it was so classy! He was a Jr. I was honored that he did that.
@finebaum
@ralphDrussoAP
Florida State, Miami, Syracuse 87, West Virginia 89, rose out of Independent , non-conference affiliation to elite status. Get rid of the Power 5 only playoff system, and open up more teams. FIU with Butch Davis could be one such program on even recruiting field.
@iamCoachAbe
They are getting clobbered on both lines of scrimmage, better get some players there or it won’t matter. Notre Dame is smarter. Built differently.
@PropstRush
Coach, heard Del Hufford was back coaching with you, Del played college football for me, great guy, so proud of him! He left Philly and headed South! Good Luck this year.
@Ryan__Ward32
I will be working on it for you Ryan! All the athletes in the Bux-Mont League had great respect for each other. I had hoped to see your Dad at the Mike Pettine COL, he was supposed to speak. My Dad and Coach Pettine were PA HS Football Hall of Fame Coaches from that league.
@RussellStoner24
Keep trying, a school that produced Woody Bennett, Chris Doleman, Omar Brown, Andre Powell, maybe coaches will get it. I got it a long time ago!
Recently, the AFCA staff dug into various metrics related to starting field position and drive length to determine if field position is the most important factor in any game. Here is what we discovered.
