Your job as a Head Coach is to get the program to it's ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be a very difficult concept for parents, players, coaches, admin to understand. Make sure you do things that help get to the ceiling & worry about what you control!
When you are Head Football Coach, sometimes people ask you, “what do you do when it’s not football season?” as if there is nothing to do! 🤣
Here was my annual “to do” list
(Long post alert) I'm going to preach for a minute...
I quit coaching football after the 2018 season ended. I had no idea that major changes were on the horizon for the profession. The Head Coach of 2023 has so many different issues that I did not deal with in my many years as…
It’s easy to be the Asst Coach, the backup QB, etc and say what you would do if you were in the top seat. It’s hard to be the person in the top seat. Be careful what you say when you are on your way up, as you may think differently if you get that big chair.
Your job as a Head Coach is to get the program to it's ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be a very difficult concept for parents, players, coaches, and administration to understand. Work to get your program to it's individual ceiling.

There are great coaches that win state championships and there are great coaches that win half their games. Your job as a coach is to get your team to their maximum potential. All teams are different.
10 things Athletic Directors should do..
The AD job can be overwhelming. If you are an AD looking for new ideas, here are 10 things I think AD can easily do:
1. Create Athletic Department "Awards"
Give out monthly awards from the Athletic Department. These do not have to come…

@drflatt68
sent me this. I may even settle for Car Wash manager if he gets the GM job. I have run a lot of fundraisers… that should qualify me for the car wash.
With football starting, here is comprehensive list of things heard from the stands:
1. "Get him"
2. "Make a play"
3. "Catch the ball"
4. "Come on coach"
5. "Stop running it up the middle"
6. "Block Somebody"
7. "Throw the ball"
8. "Come on Ref"
9. "Run faster"
10. "That's a hold"
It’s interesting to me how obsessed most football coaches are with X&Os & becoming a head coach. Ironically, when you become head coach you rarely get to work on X&Os and they rarely are the reason you’re unsuccessful. Plan X&Os but also plan relationship building & communication
People used to ask me, "You are a football coach... what do you do when it's not football season?" Here was my annual calendar. Maybe it can help someone get organized today.
If you are a HS football coach, don’t criticize college HC/OC/DC for play calling when you aren’t at their practices. You, of all people, should appreciate that not being there every day makes it impossible to really know what the team can do. Just enjoy the game! Be entertained
So...NCAA football just passed a rule saying people not playing this fall can practice 12 hours a week. Why can’t they play then?? Does the virus spread more at 13 hours together? Also who wants to practice and never play a game?? Wow....
Everyone does realize that even if we don’t have high school sports, there will be club sports and people will still go to Home Depot, Target, etc??? Stopping high school sports will not have the desired impact.
If anyone ever finds "somebody" or "they", please let me know. Both have stolen a lot of knee pads, practice jerseys, pants, cleats, etc. We have to find them.
Evaluating your Coaching Staff (long post...)
One of the things I recommend you do in the early part of the off-season is evaluate our coaching staff.
Here is the process I used as a Head Coach to evaluate my coaching staff....
STEPS FOR COACHING STAFF EVALUATION
1. Coach…
With many high schools limiting attendance to football games this fall, I am offering to make a recording of me screaming the following coaching points we will now be limited in hearing: "Get him", "Make a play", "Catch the ball", "Come on coach", "Stop running it up the middle"
It’s easy to be the Asst Coach, the backup QB, etc and say what you would do if you were in the top seat. It’s hard to be the person in the top seat. Be careful what you say when you are on your way up, as you may think differently if you get that big chair.
Football practice is starting. Watch out for "somebody". He will steal pads, cleats, etc. Then in games people will yell for you to block "somebody" even though we never found him when the pads came up missing...
Being the Head Coach is tough. A lot of people think coaches just get Gatorade dumped on them and yell. That's not what it's about. You navigate difficult situations, that come out of nowhere, that you did not create, but will affect you.
Principals/ADs looking to hire coaches: Don’t become enamored with the type of offense or other small things when selecting a candidate. Ask yourself...
1. Who can build the best relationships?
2. Who is the best communicator?
3. Who seems the most organized?
These are universal.

As an AD, I helped hire coaches in every sport. These are the interview questions we asked the candidates and reflected on with the committee. If you are a candidate, know the answers to these questions.

Reminder: Your job as a Coach is to get the program to it's ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be a very difficult concept for parents, players, and administration to understand. Work to get your program to it's individual ceiling, then keep pushing.
Head Football Coach is the most competitive job in the Athletic Department. Usually 100+ applicants. If you are fortunate enough to get an interviews, make sure you know the answer to these questions. They won’t ask all of them but be ready!

- Do not talk bad about the coach in front of your kid
- Volunteer time
- Communicate
- Show the same concern for grades you show for sports
Have some accountability system within your scheme. Doesn't have to be any big punishments, just an understanding of what is expected. Golden Rules. Here is an example of Offensive & Defensive Accountability plan. Maybe it can help you come up with your own.
As a play caller, I tried to limit plays but have as many formations as possible. My favorite formations allowed us to:
- Put the defense in a bind
- Run both ways w/ jet motion
- Run the box
- Throw verticals
- Throw horizontal
Here were my 10 favorite formations... 🧵
Head Coaches of all sports: get organized with your “To Do” list. This is the list I used as a Head Football coach. Maybe it can help someone out today!
So many games cancelled, rescheduled mid-week. As if coaching football wasn't hard enough pre-COVID. You now also have to worry about your players being out and the other team cancelling. Hats off to all the coaches out there continuing to persevere for kids.
Everyone wants to be the leader until they have to have the hard conversations and make the difficult decisions. Leadership is not easy.

of being a head coach: There isn’t much of an “off-season”. Here was my annual “to do” list as Head Football Coach. Thank you to all the Head Coaches out there working hard all year for kids.

If you are a Head Coach interviewing an assistant coach, here are the questions we recommend. Obviously add in more scheme-specific questions regarding to what you want as well. Always know what you are looking for and cater the specific questions to that need.
Principals/ADs looking to hire coaches: Don’t become enamored with the things that don’t matter when selecting a candidate.
Ask yourself...
1. Who can build the best relationships?

10 Stats that win football games 🧵
There are so many statistics now that they can be deceiving or overwhelming. Over my career, I found these were 10 stats that mattered….
Coaches get head jobs because they're good w/ players as an assistant, but working with ADULTS usually makes or breaks you. Most are unprepared. Make sure you are ready to work with:
- Asst. coaches
- Parents
- Administration
- Other sport coaches
It’s easy to be the backup QB, the Asst Coach, etc and say what you would do if you were in the top seat. It’s hard to be the person in the top seat. Be careful what you say when you are on your way up, as it may come back to get you if/when you get to make all the decisions.
Successful Football Parent Tips
- Don’t put your child down
- Don’t make excuses for your child
- Insist on good grades
- Support the coach around your child
- Encourage your child to play for love of the game, not scholarship
- Always tell your child you love watching them play
Loyalty between coaches and administration should be a two-way street. We need coaches and administrators that are honest with each other and support each other.

If you have coached football, you need to read this! Here's a little humor for my post this week.
10 things the young guys don't know about in coaching....
Coaches: As you prepare for next year, make an annual calendar. Here is the calendar I used over the years. Kept me organized. Also, if you are not a coach, these is the kind of work that is done all year as a Head Coach.
All this stuff I put on twitter is great and all....but if you want to be a successful coach you must care about kids. This is the first step and all the other is secondary.
No OC should ever again talk about the defense taking away their best receiver and that’s why the WR didn’t get the ball much. Sark has done great job getting Devonta the ball when everyone knows he is the best WR.
The keys to being a good assistant coach:
