There will be a fiery, bright ball in the sky for much of today. This is normal. It is the Sun, the star our planet orbits around at a distance of about 93 million miles. It will provide warmth and could enhance mood.
Warning: Do not stare directly at it.
Pumpkin Spice Warning for tomorrow as temperatures may not get out of the 60s. A Pumpkin Spice Watch is in effect for the next few mornings given lows in the 50s.
Water level at 9.46’ in the harbor. We’ve just passed the high-water mark for Hurricane Matthew. This is the highest non-tropical tide on record at Charleston Harbor.
31 days into the government shutdown, and the fine folks at

continue to deliver forecasts and warnings to the people of the Lowcountry and GA Coastal Empire with no hiccups. My continued appreciation for the meteorologists who serve our nation on promise of pay.
Just did a little tour of West Ashley and parts of downtown. Cleanup crews are kicking ass — things look in really good shape, all things considered.
The most dangerous thing on the road right now are drivers who do not know that disabled traffic lights are four way stops…
Walmart Market in Summerville. It’s like people think a storm is coming or something. Unfortunately for me, my kid only likes honey wheat 😂

Thank you to everyone for taking this severe weather threat seriously. I know it can be frustrating when it feels like you might have done all this for nothing, but you did the right thing by being prepared.
It’s nice to feel lucky again.
Severely nice weather safety tips:
- Put as few walls between you and the outside as possible
- Seeking shelter under a tree is perfectly acceptable
- Wear a helmet for your bike ride
- Use sunglasses and sunscreen
- Remember: “When Sunshine Glows, Go Outdoors”
As rain bands begin to get stronger and stronger, power outages will begin to become more likely. With apologies to Alec Baldwin, Mitch, and Murray, remember this rule:
ABC
A - Always
B - Be
C - Charging
Always be charging.
Today marks ten years of
@chswx
. Thank you to everyone over the last decade for your storm reports, coffee, Patreon, weather questions, weather pictures, and most importantly, your trust. I am, quite frankly, amazed it's gotten this far.
Yesterday: Record high minimums of 75 and 77 at the airport and downtown, respectively.
Today: 59 in Summerville with low 60s elsewhere.
Freaking finally, man.
The Ian we encounter will NOT be the strength of the Ian Florida encountered. I think sometimes that might get lost with the tropical headlines sometimes, especially for new folks.
We’ve done this before, and we’ll do it again, and we’re gonna be just fine.
The cow coming down is a perfect reminder that you should secure loose items outdoors. Strong winds can make outdoor items projectiles, direct hit or otherwise. Strong winds and rain will be felt far from the center of the storm. Keep getting ready!
This is one of those nights where you will want your phone to be able to alert you. Resist the urge to keep it on silent or Do Not Disturb tonight as you may not hear emergency alerts for flash flooding or tornadoes.
Yes, I’ve seen the Euro.
It’s not gospel, but it underscores the low confidence in the forecast one way or the other. Respect this uncertainty by preparing and, if needed, evacuating!
It is exceptionally dangerous to be attempting to travel downtown right now given continued heavy rain and record tides. Photo via Capt. Kathleen on Instagram:
Seeing reports of questionable forecasts from a vendor that should know better. This week is one of those times where weather apps driven purely by computerized forecasts fall short and you *must* listen to meteorologists.
Cheers to y’all

. Long, long hours of briefings, coordination, excruciatingly tough forecasting executed well with a balanced, consistent message throughout the event.
There are no shortage of Scary Computer Model Runs going around regarding Dorian. Take a breath and let the meteorology get sorted out a bit more. If and when it's "go time," you'll know.

It’s a Severely Nice Weather Alert Day. Remain weather-aware by opening your sunroof, lowering your convertible’s top, and enjoying lunch outdoors. Expect highs right around 80 under mostly sunny skies.
The 8am advisory confirms a north-northeastward motion has begun. We can see the effects of this as winds have turned to be much more out of the north over the last few hours. Tropical storm conditions look to persist for several more hours, but there is an end in sight.
Rain is beginning in upper Berkeley County and will sink southward across the area over the next few hours. It’s moving at a snail’s pace.
In fact, one could say it is as slow as Flolasses.
Admin note regarding Twitter as a platform:
First off, as long as Twitter remains a viable platform,
@chswx
will be here.
With that in mind, I have serious concerns about the near-term stability of the platform in the wake of numerous layoffs and expected infrastructure cuts.
One more band of rain is moving through downtown. Generally will be light to moderate. From there, light rain will linger for a little longer. The good news is we are through the worst of this. Tomorrow will be gorgeous, BTW…
Things are brightening up out there a bit as dry air begins to infiltrate into the area, but winds remain quite gusty, and with such saturated soils after the soaking we've taken, more trees will likely come down. Continue to delay nonessential travel.
Some good news: Tonight’s tide prediction has been revised down to 7.2’. It looks like more northerly winds are helping to keep the water levels a little more in check. Some minor flooding will still be possible around the 11PM high tide, but it should be less severe.
You guessed it: SEVERELY NICE WEATHER ALERT DAY due to copious, uninterrupted sunshine, temperatures topping out in the upper 70s to around 80, and low humidity. Stay weather-aware by going outside and enjoying it!
Squalls are already working into the area from the south. These become more frequent and windier as the day goes on. Limited tornado threat for now, but that will increase as the day goes on. I know the 5am wake up sucked, but please leave your emergency alerts on today.
The worst is over, and on the fast side of the timeline, too, which is always good. Winds may kick back up on the back side of Idalia overnight, but nothing damaging is expected. Heaviest rain is over, though showers may linger through early Thursday. Exhale!
STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT PORTIONS OF CHARLESTON, COLLETON, BERKELEY AND DORCHESTER COUNTIES, At 831 PM EDT, National Weather Service doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Jamestown to near Old Santee Can...
The Tropical Storm Warning is hanging on a little longer for the risk for tropical storm conditions in a few spots (mainly near the coast), but otherwise we are done with Ian’s weather. The recovery phase begins: listen to local officials and be safe as cleanup begins.
