National reporter of the year 😭!!!
I’m so beyond proud of the stories I was able to tell in 2023 and the justice I helped to get for victims. I love my job so much for that reason, and this is the cherry on top. Thank you
@IRNAwards
!
Yesterday I was arrested by
@HertsPolice
whilst covering a protest on the M25.
I showed my press card, and I was handcuffed almost immediately. My phone was snatched out of my hand. I was searched twice, held in a cell for 5 hours, and I wasn’t questioned whilst in custody.
Just boarded a flight to Portugal for reporting purposes for
@LBC
. It’s almost full.
Actual announcement just now: “This isn’t a kindergarten, this is a two hour flight. If you can’t wear your masks you will be starting your holiday in Portugal in a police station”
It was absolutely terrifying being in a cell with a pad for a bed in one corner and a metal toilet in the other. I was just doing my job.
What’s also terrifying is what this means for press freedom. It was blindingly obvious I was a reporter.
Thank you for the kind messages x
EXCL: Senior Home Office source tells me Home Sec refused to sign off on hotel bookings for migrants at Manston last week “because they were in Tory areas”.
@LBC
On the day that “noisy” protest becomes unlawful under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, at least 20 police officers have just surrounded anti-Brexit protestor Steve Bray outside the Houses of Parliament and seized his loud speaker.
@LBC
Hertfordshire Police has admitted the arrest of LBC reporter Charlotte Lynch who was detained while covering a Just Stop Oil protest yesterday was not necessary.
BREAKING: Doncaster Sheffield airport to close. They'll start to wind down at the end of October.
In her first PMQs just over two weeks ago, Liz Truss said she'd protect it.
@LBC
'The only question was how I knew to be there.'
After being arrested while covering an eco-protest LBC Reporter
@charlotterlynch
recounts her experience.
This is absolutely despicable. You cannot talk about a woman like this, about ANYONE like this, simply because you disagree with them. Let alone on national television! How on earth does this go unchallenged? How is this allowed?
Review of
@HertsPolice
response to recent protests on the M25 and arrests of *four* journalists, incl myself, has found:
- Arrests weren’t justified
- Officers lacked understanding of the role of the press
- Two officers involved hadn’t done compliance training
@LBC
After two days I’ll never forget I just want to say thank you for all of the touching messages of support, not just from colleagues and friends, but also from countless
@LBC
listeners and people who’ve heard my story. Your words mean more than you know and I’ve read every one.
Source close to Manston claims Suella Braverman only approved three hotels last week which were in Labour constituencies. Priti Patel accused of doing the same when she was Home Sec and “they saw this coming”.
@LBC
BREAKING: Inquiry finds Wayne Couzens sexually assaulted a child, tried to kidnap a woman at knife point and was reported to police eight times for indecent exposure before he killed Sarah Everard.
@LBC
@LBCNews
EXCL: Police will not investigate an NHS worker who filmed and shared video of a patient whilst naked
Lancashire Police say no crime took place when a female mental health patient was covertly recorded by a staff member, who then showed it to others
@LBC
Braverman has repeatedly denied “deliberately ignoring advice” and Home Office says any claims advice was ignored are “completely untrue”. But is that the same as refusing some hotels but not others?
@LBC
We have permission to share that the patient attempted to take her own life after finding out.
Family say they don’t know who else has the video.
Online Safety Bill made specific offence of recording & sharing intimate footage without consent.
(Excl with
@HandyMan_18
)
Hello. I've written some more about my arrest alongside some footage of it. I wanted to share it because I have been able now to fully digest what happened, how serious it was, and why it matters to you.
@LBC
✨ Protection for journalists! ✨
Thrilled to have been in the House of Lords tonight to see Public Order Bill amendment pass with majority of 91, to ensure protection of journalists reporting on protests. Thank you to Baroness Chakrabarti for tabling it following my arrest.
🚨Journalist
@richfelgate
arrested AGAIN whilst filming JSO protests. This time by
@metpoliceuk
at the Coronation.
A reminder - the Public Order Bill includes a clause which states police can’t use powers to prevent journalists or observers covering protests. Answers needed ASAP
Yesterday I got arrested whilst filming a
@JustStop_Oil
supporter holding a banner on the pavement near the coronation route. I'm a filmmaker and had my
@BECTU
press accreditation visible around my neck.
Police deemed this to be "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance".
Very interesting and suggests this may have been policy over the Summer as my source claims - also told by a councillor in Brighton and Hove that a hotel which was earmarked for Surrey was ditched and it went to B&H instead.
@charlotterlynch
@LBC
In August we found out about a plan to house asylum seekers in a well-known local hotel before it was made public. It’s in the constituency of Tom Pursglove, who was immigration minister at the time. A few days later, it was inexplicably ditched 👀
@SangitaMyska
@British_Airways
This happened to me last year! I got fully reimbursed for the flight, all expenses incurred as a result, plus compensation. Keep all of your receipts and submit here!
If you don't understand why politicians, particularly the Shadow Foreign Secretary, would engage with a peaceful Palestinian group with absolutely nothing to do with Hamas, I politely suggest you educate yourself on this conflict and more broadly how international relations work.
Lib Dems say this is “yet another example of the Conservatives putting their party’s interests ahead of the national interest and the rule of law.”
“Now more than ever there must be a Cabinet Office Inquiry, this is the final straw."
@LBC
Also found:
- Police powers weren’t used appropriately
- Direction to arrest was given and no alternative, so arrest was likely regardless. (Whatever we said or did, it was going to happen)
It’s revealed a 4th journo was arrested along with
@richfelgate
,
@tomsdinner
and I.

The new laws are to tackle the likes of Insulate Britain and who’ve caused huge disruption by blocking roads. But it defines excessive noise as “having a significant impact on people or causing serious disruption to the activities of organisations in the vicinity”.

I hope that my experience will at least mean this never happens to another journalist in Britain again, simply for doing their job.

I’m also grateful to

for submitting an EDM, and to Baroness Chakrabarti for raising in the Lords. Thank you
@BenKentish
for raising with No 10 and
@theousherwood
for contacting MPs about my case.
The ‘touch of balance’ offered doesn’t even begin to cover these completely irrational and frankly disturbing insults. The way they both laugh through it is terrifying. This is SO beyond dangerous.
@richfelgate
@JustStop_Oil
@bectu
I’m so sorry Rich. Remember public order bill protection for journalists clause was added in wake of our arrests in Herts
I’ve just realised that 6 years ago today I was in the middle of a week of work experience at Global in Newcastle, with no idea that it would lead to my first job in journalism. I was still in Uni, had 0 experience, but they invested so much time in me and taught me EVERYTHING.

@LBC
Confused about the defence that the ‘mainstream media’ are simply out to get Russell Brand when
#Dispatches
literally exposed a disgraceful culture within those very organisations that allowed his behaviour to continue and worsen. It was just as damning for them.
🥳 So honoured to be selected for this year’s
