I’ve been on Knock LA’s admin team since 2022. I’ve coordinated skills building workshops w/ journalism orgs, overseen award winning reporting & secured major funders. Last night
@GroundGameLA
maliciously deleted all of my

accounts. Pls read our newsroom’s open letter
David Ordaz, Jr. was in the midst of a mental health crisis on Sunday around 2pm. A team of mental health workers were on their way to him. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department got there first and shot him about 17x, killing him.
This is Blake Anderson. He’s a security guard at the Good Batch Lounge. Early Sunday morning, deputy Rodriguez and his partner pulled up and began beating Blake. He’s since lost vision in his eye. He’s current being charged with assault on a police office for this.
@lasdgangs
I have spent the past 6 months on this project. So excited to share this with you –
A Tradition of Violence: The History of Deputy Gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
please read. please share.
They work behind the scenes and perform essential tasks for our deputies & detectives. Today, on Crime Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day, we thank our Crime Analysts for the incredible work they do.

BREAKING:
@LASheriffDept
is having a party at
@SassafrasHW
on Vine in Hollywood. Acting on a tip, I went to the scene and captured photos of deputies drinking on the street, littering, and no one had on a mask. Bars have been closed under guidance from Gov. Newsom since 7/13
We found out the LA's Sheriff's Department (
@LASDHQ
) was having a party tonight at
@SassafrasHW
in Hollywood. Several men we believe to be deputies identified themselves by name and verbally confirmed they were attending an LASD function.
Multiple times during this video, the deputy puts a gun to Blake’s head. Blake told me he at this point the deputy said to him, “I’m going to blow your fucking brains out.” This took place in Inglewood, which is out of the
@LASDHQ
jurisdiction.
Also last night: Jay-Z hosted an Oscars party at the Chateau Marmont, which is currently in the midst of a boycott led by Black women who were fired after complaining about repeated sexual harassment and assault at the hands of guests. The boycott is backed by other celebs.
Really good question: why did LAPD choose to close the site and let the protesters stay? I’ve reported on protesters being arrested for simply standing outside of the Mayor’s home in the past...
We’re at the mass vaccination site at Dodger Stadium to get my mom the vaccine. The anti–vax protestors have approached the entrance to the site. The LAPD have now closed the gate. We have been sitting here for about half an hour. Nobody is moving.
I obtained video from a nearby business that shows
@LASDHQ
pulled into the parking lot, jumped out and attacked Blake Anderson as he walked with a friend. Blake has since lost his eyesight a result of this brutal beating.
EXCLUSIVE: Deputy Konrad Thieme, arrested last week for assault, is a leader in a KKK-themed deputy gang and has a history of brutally assaulting residents.
@LACoSheriff
knew about Thieme’s history, and a domestic violence arrest. He promoted him.
LA is in an enormous homeless crisis.
We have a sheriffs department full of gangs.
We have a corruption scandal at City Hall.
Our local paper is investigating *check notes* the origins of Hot Cheetos?
This is a journalist for the Times of Israel. Still gainfully employed.
Meanwhile, my colleagues who signed a letter asking to stop the murders of journalists and civilians have been punished by their outlets and banned from covering the massacre in Gaza.
This is Robert Fuller. He was found hanging from a tree near Palmdale City Hall yesterday. LA County Sheriff's say this is a suicide. We need a full investigation.
.
@LAPDHQ
officers are fundraising for Salvador Sanchez, the off-duty officer who shot and killed a developmentally disabled man and wounded two others in a Costco supermarket. Sanchez has been charged with manslaughter and assault. The man’s family was awarded $17m by civil jury
EXCLUSIVE: On a 2015 camping trip to Kern County, a group of
@LASDHQ
deputies held down another who made an "unauthorized change" to a deputy gang tattoo. After attempting to burn it off w/ the barrel of a recently fired gun, they shot him in the ankle.
Tonight I will be on
@SpecNews1SoCal
talking about my series on
#LASDgangs
. Here’s me showing off bulletproof vests I’ve started wearing after receiving death threats. Thank you
@KateCagle
for sharing the story.
Here’s my series if you haven’t read yet:
LA Mayor Eric Garcetti just said that the county has more cases than all of Canada. If LA County were an independent country, we would have the 20th most cases in the world. He also said al fresco dining is still open.
American journalist Cerise Castle says there is a gang in Los Angeles made up of police officers & they are identified by a tattoo that changes with the more k*lls they get 🚔😳
I can't tell you how maddening it is to chase a story for over a week, break it, not be credited, then have local reporters tell my colleagues that I'm being "silly" for asking for it.
Buzzfeed Inc. (owners of Complex, HuffPost, Tasty, etc) tells investors that AI will generate content, headlines, "infinite quizzes" & develop Black, Asian, Latino identity-based content to help corporate brands tap an "authentic voice" to sell products
NEW: Researchers at
@UCLA
found the deaths of some 30 people in LA County jails were classified as "natural" despite evidence of physical harm done to their bodies. Researchers were only given access to 59 of 292 autopsy reports to analyze due to security holds by
@LASDHQ
.
LA County Sheriff Villanueva just held a press conference on the death of Robert Fuller, which has been officially ruled a suicide. Villanueva said this investigation was “one of the easier ones” and that it “demonstrates why the public needs to trust the Sheriff’s Department.”
BREAKING: The Los Angeles County Democratic Party's Resolutions Committee has passed a motion calling for the resignation of Sheriff Alex Villanueva. It will be voted on next week by members of the party's Central Committee for adoption. Story coming.
I’m outside of the East LA Sheriff’s Station where the family of Miguel Lopez, a 70 year old grandfather killed this year by a gang unit executing a search warrant. Chants are led by Miguel’s grandchildren joined by a coalition of families whose relatives were killed by deputies.
So honored to announce that I’m a winner of this year’s American Journalism Online Awards for my 15 part series on
#LASDgangs
, the first and only history of deputy gangs. Thank you so much to the community for reading it and to the judges for acknowledging my work.
#AJOAwards
The full security video of Blake Anderson being beaten by
@LASDHQ
deputies is now available
@KnockDotLA
. Deputies drive into the parking lot, jump out of the car and begin beating Blake. He has since lost eyesight. Story coming soon.
It’s here! My podcast A Tradition of Violence is now available wherever you get podcasts. Please subscribe and share. In episode 1 I cover the origins of LASD gangs and the first gangs in the department. Here a lieutenant shares about seeing early gang activity in the 1960s.
I've been told by white employees that I "don't look like I work" at KCRW.
I found out just a few weeks ago I make $12k less than white employees with my job.
Unionizing is important to me so employees of color are protected, and this bullshit stops happening.
We started bargaining our first
#sagaftra
contract 11 months ago. We’re back at the table tomorrow and looking forward to getting a fair contract nailed down for KCRW’s content staff. Retweet if you’re with us

LAPD officer just called to tell me they can't process the evidence from the hit and run I was in because of "The Defunding," - and she said it like it was the title of some right wing horror movie starring Kevin Sorbo.
Yesterday, the LA Times handed their opinion section over to Trump voters. Today, their Latinx food critic was denied equal pay for equal work.
This all comes after they made a public pledge to “reckon with racism”.
The two-page memo that
@latimes
sent me yesterday was extremely painful to read.
In the memo, the L.A. Times said I am not worth the same as my male or white colleagues.
Isn’t it great how
@KnockDotLA
does better reporting than the two establishment Times papers? Can you imagine what we could do with a full time staff??
Just listened to the full hour plus of
@CD6Nury
@kdeleon
and
@cmgilcedillo
uttering slur after slur all whilst laying out a plan for redistricting the city of Los Angeles in their favor. Stay tuned to
@KnockDotLA
, we’ll have it for you shortly.
New from me: almost 40% of sworn
@LASDHQ
personnel do *not* live in LA County.
At least 51 of them live in states like Idaho, Arizona and as far east as Kentucky.
KCRW was aware of what I was going through for months. It’s heartbreaking to see them choose to deny my and other’s experiences. Here is my resignation letter from the station, which details more of them.
.
@KimKardashian
endorsed LA mayoral candidate
@RickCarusoLA
in an enthusiastic pitch to her 313 million Instagram followers, saying he would help with crime and homelessness.
Here in El Sereno where activists are trying to prevent the eviction of families from vacant homes owned by CalTrans. CHP is stationed outside ~15 properties.
Footage shows
@LASDHQ
deputies beating Blake Anderson for No Reason. I obtained security video from a nearby business that shows deputies appearing to violate policy in the incident. Story:
Today
@LAPDHQ

EXCLUSIVE: Deputy Angel Reinosa tried to report criminal conduct inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He was fired and charged with a felony.
NEW: Judge Elaine Lu has ordered Sheriff Alex Villanueva to appear before her next month & explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt
for ignoring subpoenas to testify before
@LACountyCOC
. The proceeding is criminal & could result in a maximum fine of $3,000 15 days of jail.
BREAKING: the motion received 91% of the votes. The Los Angeles Democratic Party has passed a motion formally calling for the removal of sheriff Alex Villanueva.
Couldn’t close out the
#LASDgang
series without a special surprise:
Available now for the public: a searchable database of ALL deputies I found affiliated with
#LASD
gangs. Please share far and wide.
BREAKING: Office of LA District Attorney George Gascón will NOT charge the deputies who shot and killed Frederick Holder.
Holder was an unarmed Black man shot 17 times by
@LASDHQ
deputies on a freeway on ramp.
EXCLUSIVE: I obtained the autopsy photos of Frederick Holder. Sources tell me the wounds to his body indicate he was shot at a range of no more than 10 feet with an assault rifle, blowing off his mouth.
So excited to announce this: A Tradition of Violence, a podcast about deputy gangs within
@LASDHQ
. I wrote the history of deputy gangs for
@KnockDotLA
, exposing their 50-year reign of terror. Now I’m bringing it to you in a podcast. Subscribe today!
B is 17 years old. This afternoon, she gave me a tour of the home that was reclaimed for her and her mother. She told me how excited she was to have her own bedroom for the first time in her life. CHP just knocked down her front door, and currently have her hogtied in the street
New: I spent a year reviewing all available records of shootings by
@LASDHQ
. The results are staggering.
At least 916 people had deputies fire guns at them. 42% were killed.
At least 307 unarmed people were shot at - 1 in every 3 shootings. (1)
BREAKING: An amended complaint has been filed on behalf of the deputies who were beat up the Banditos deputy gang at Kennedy Hall in 2018 unmasking additional gang members. There are now 64 named associates of the gang, including captains and commanders. Story coming.
it's been 2 and a half months and I'm still not able to engage in extended physical activity (think jogging, dancing, walking up the stairs) as a result of my injuries.
Explosive, exclusive reporting for
@KnockDotLA
from
@bencamach0
: The Santa Ana Police department appears to have a gang within the ranks of their MET Team. Members share tattoos, tokens, and sexually assaulted a child. No one has been disciplined.
Thank you
@GravelInstitute
for featuring the stories of the families terrorized by gang members inside of
@LASDHQ
and my reporting for
@KnockDotLA
in this documentary. Please watch!
Criminal gangs – “Banditos,” “Executioners,” “Vikings” – operating among LA police, killing civilians with impunity. Corruption, brutality, murder: the bloody secret of Los Angeles.
A documentary from the Gravel Institute.
Watch it now.
#GoogleLASDGangs
The Sheriff of LA County name checks my reporting as “unproven allegations alleging ‘deputy gangs’” and instructs people to Google his press release. Funnily enough, the first search result is my article.
LA law enforcement shot 3 people in 3 different incidents last night. One man is dead, one woman is expected to survive, and details on the third have not been released. This comes just one week after a man was shot *inside* of an area hospital by law enforcement.
Today my 13 part series with
@KNOCKdotLA
on
#LASDgangs
kicks off. The first 3 parts cover the origins of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the formation of one of the most infamous deputy gangs: The Lynwood Vikings.
Here’s LA City Council President
@CD6Nury
talking about a Black child. Remember, before city council, she was on the board for the LA Unified School District.
Here’s a video that appears to show
@LASDHQ
deputies performing a drive by shooting on residents with so-called “less lethal” rounds. This violates several department policies. It was posted by
@wtactraining
, a right-wing pro law enforcement page.
New from me: LA County Sheriff candidate Cecil Rhambo shot 3 people in 3 years: his supervisor, a colleague, and an unidentified man while off duty.
That's per records
@LASDHQ
disclosed just 1 day after I submitted a request for them.
Baca, a 21-year veteran of the Inglewood Police Department who serves as their police union representative, was accused of delivering cocaine to a “witness cooperating with law enforcement,” according to federal authorities
Over the weekend, a group of “concerned neighbors” organized a clean up of the area under the Cattaraugus Tunnel in West LA, which included dumping the belongings of an unhoused man and placing these enormous boulders along the sidewalk.
Spoke to restaurant owners in LA on this latest lockdown. They had spent thousands making outdoor dining feasible. They had prepped for Thanksgiving week, one of their biggest nights for business of the year. This is devastating for them. His one question: where is the science?
NEW: Today
@LACoSheriff
Villanueva hosted H.E Shyalpa T. Rinpoche @ Hall of Justice to promote universal peace. I asked Villanueva if he & Undersheriff Murakami defying subpoenas & being sued for using racial slurs are actions of upholding peace. He said I’m “disrespectful.”
New: Reporters at the LA Times who signed an open letter criticizing Israel have been told that they cannot write about the Israel/Gaza conflict for three months
The LAPD says that the curfew between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. tomorrow applies to everyone, INCLUDING news media according to Officer Rosario Cervantes. This is frankly, bullshit.
Lot of talk this week about why NPR is losing its BIPOC employees left and right. Just about a year ago, I posted about my experience with LA affiliate KCRW.
KCRW was aware of what I was going through for months. It’s heartbreaking to see them choose to deny my and other’s experiences. Here is my resignation letter from the station, which details more of them.
BREAKING: TheLA County Board of Supervisors (
@LACountyBOS
) just voted 4-1 to ask voters if they should have power to remove a sheriff for cause on November's ballot. Supervisor Barger was the no.

firefighters are under investigation after a video shows them striking and removing a homeless man who they say was breaking into their fire station. Neighbors say the man has been a nuisance for months. Did they go to far? Tonight at 11 from ABC7

@LASDHQ
is the biggest sheriff’s department in the USA. Over the past year, I’ve conducted an extensive review of all available records of their shootings.
On Monday,
@KnockDotLA
will launch the first ever public-facing, searchable database of the shootings. Stay tuned.
Another bad LA take from the NYT. The article fails to ask why LA city and county allocate large sums for policing and little for social welfare. Also weird the author mentions the death of John Horton in the first graph yet never discusses the deputy gang who killed him.
A year after the murder of George Floyd, Los Angeles and other American cities are facing a surge in violent crime, forcing cities whose leaders embraced the idea of police reform to reassess how far they are willing to go to reimagine public safety.
