Had to sift through hundreds of seemingly the same picture to decide but I finally got my ERAS headshot! You’re looking at (hopefully) a future

Officially Dr. Celeste Amara Lourie Pain! So grateful to my friends and family for the endless support throughout this journey. And thank you to

I take Step 2 tomorrow so today I am getting a massage and my nails done and trying to distract myself in any way I can! Send good vibes my way please!
Just submitted ERAS today! Feels unreal to have completed this milestone I’ve been working towards over the last 3 years and I’m so excited for the next steps to come!

I have my first interview today and a little gift bag with water and snacks was waiting for me in my reserved room from our lovely career and professional development department. I couldn’t do this without them!! 🥹
Just got these awesome pins for my white coat!! Can’t wait to wear them in clinic! thanks for creating them and including extra treats in my package
@clairezagorski
I just found out I will be working on a project in Cuba this summer that I had discussed being very interested in during my interview here at MCW exactly a year ago. I am amazed at how everything can come full circle and lead you exactly to where you're meant to be.
So after a lot of thought, many discussions with incredible support people in my life, and only a few existential crises, I have decided that I am going to be applying Anesthesia! It's a little scary making a switch at this point of M3 but I am so excited for the year to come!

Got my ID yesterday! Up until now this has all seemed like a far off experience but it’s really starting to hit me that I’m a medical student. After 3 gap years of imagining this moment it’s here!
It’s so funny watching greys anatomy now as a med student. My roommates and I are yelling at the TV because they didn’t start broad spectrum antibiotics on this kid who ended up having neisseria meningitidis.
Sitting in the airport studying for Step 2 and reflecting on how fun this week was! I got to meet so many amazing fellow medical students, residents, and faculty who inspired me with the work they’re doing. I was sad to say goodbye to everyone after a short time!
#SAEM23
So I start classes tomorrow, which I hadn’t really thought about until today and now I’m frantically downloading slides and trying to do pre-class work I didn’t know about. Med school is starting off great!
Just boarded my flight to SF for

! So excited to be able to visit home for the weekend while also learning more about anesthesiology. Can’t wait to see friends and family and form new connections at the conference!
I just found out I’ve been accepted to be a Kohler Global Health Scholar for summer 2021! This is something I have been dreaming of since I interviewed last year and I am soooooo honored and excited to be a part of this incredible opportunity to contribute to global research!
I feel like a part of studying medicine that I have not seen discussed is how hard it is to be managing incredibly sick patients daily, then while studying for shelf or boards having to read vignettes over and over describing all the ways in which our bodies can fail us.
Had so much fun attending and presenting this poster at
@NAEMSP
today! Was so great to meet health care professionals passionate about EMS from all over!
First day of orientation started out with an in depth history of the segregation of milwaukee and how it is still affecting Black communities today. I learned a lot and I am so excited to be part of an institution that highlights racial inequities right off the bat!
It was so cool to get to watch a fellow MSA’s abstract presentation today on important work being done with Refugee and Immigrant Health, a topic very near and dear to my heart!

@studentdrstacy
gave an excellent presentation about the anesthetic management of cesarean hysterectomy for placenta accreta! So proud of her hard work!

First talk of the weekend was super informative about how abortion laws impact anesthesia practice and how to incorporate advocacy into our care! So fun to see

as the moderator! Thanks Drs.

So I’m actually loving my anesthesia rotation a lot and something one of the attendings said to me really stood out. She said anesthesia is like reading a book, reading it is really interesting, but watching someone read is incredibly boring.”

is my day 1 who brought me here 🤗
My friend asked me tonight how my first day on my rotation was. I said it was good and she replied "that was the first time you've felt good about your first day of a rotation!" Progress sometimes isn't noticeable but I'm realizing I'm finally getting the hang of this whole thing
Just spent a very long time making a chart about different metabolic enzymes and whether they are actives or deactivated when they’re phosphorylated because apparently evolution couldn’t make up its mind
I'm grateful to MCW for providing us with lectures to prepare us for the residency application season to come but it is giving me heart palpitations. Send thoughts and prayers to us M3s staring up from the bottom of our Everest!
I started this playlist while studying for the MCAT and I’ve listened to it before every big test since. It has the most random genres from EDM to musical theater but they’re all songs that inspire me to do hard things!
I told my mom I was missing being in a progressive and activist community and my dad (who is an old radical organizer himself) emails me with links to progressive orgs in my area and signed the email “Lefty Dad”
😭 What did I do to deserve him?
How are we supposed to stay focused and motivated when every day there’s a new disaster? I knew medical school would be hard, but add in starting in the middle of a pandemic, racial justice movement, and election year... this feels impossible.
Got the chance to be a model for the Ultrasound Guided Nerve Block session. This was for a demonstration on PENG blocks for lower extremity regional anesthesia! I learned it’s a good option because it is just a sensory block and doesn’t impact motor function.

@mcwquips
Dr. Ferguson your REACH sessions are so greatly appreciated by me and so many of my peers! I’m sorry that people feel like they can hide behind anonymity but just know it is not what the rest of us believe. Thank you for your dedication to all you do ❤️
Thank you Dr. Ferguson (
@mcwquips
) for such a meaningful REACH session today. The topic of compassion v. empathy and how to hold space for our patients' trauma while not taking it on ourselves is something I have thought a lot about without any idea how to approach it. 1/3
Just attended a conference about Global Health and Emergency Medicine here at MCW and I am just so grateful to be able to begin my journey in medicine at a school where I am surrounded by people who inspire me and encourage me to continue following my passion for global medicine!
Finally submitted my ERAS applications last night and am so excited to be applying

I minored in Cognitive Science in college just because it was interesting not thinking of how it would be useful. But now, I am SO grateful to my past self cause I don't have to learn the complicated details of neuroscience for the first time as an already overwhelmed med student
Hey med Twitter, prefacing this with I'm personally ok but does anyone know if you have an inpatient stay in a psychiatric facility if that will show up on residency applications?
There are protests in my city tonight because of the ruling on Joseph Mensah. The national guard has been deployed and we’re on mandatory curfew until Monday. I had plans to study tonight but instead I’ve just watched Netflix because I can’t seem to focus on school right now...
I love learning more about Global and Rural Anesthesia practices! Thank you Dr.
@HILTYORR_MD
and Dr. Beatriz Sant’Anna for teaching us more about these topics.

I know that when you're in medical school you become a hypochondriac, so is it worth it to schedule a doctor's appointment because I think my right shoulder hurts because of my gallbladder?
I’m really excited to get to Milwaukee and start this new chapter of my life but I am NOT looking forward to saying goodbye to my parents and pulling away from the curb. Can we just skip that part?
Everyone is entitled to their own personal beliefs about abortion, but how can we be medical students/doctors and not fully support planned parenthood?! How is using their graphic politicized to a point where students have complained to the professor?? Please make it make sense.
You'd think after 4 years of college and being well into my first semester of medical school that I would know what side the "apical membrane" was but alas I still do not...
So so so grateful to be included in this round of vaccinations here at MCW! Happy to have done my part in helping to end this pandemic once and for all!

Studying for my last exam of a week of stressful tests and I'm finally able to come up for air a little, but that involves fully processing all the current events in the news. I am sad, I am angry, and I am feeling hopeless.
I very much dislike writing e-mails in a professional setting. I never know what to say at the beginning or how to sign off. And it doesn't help that the perfect casual but still professional sign off is "Best, name" but I can't put "Best, Celeste" cause then I'm rhyming...
Something I’m most bummed about starting med school in the midst of covid is now all those clinical experiences I was so looking forward to getting involved with during M1 can’t happen....
@trups772
eloquently discussed the analysis of different EMS calls to a local ICE detention center and the next steps she plans to take in her research!
I’m definitely enjoying break but I’m starting to get bored so I’m looking forward to starting the new semester but I know that 1 week in I’m going to miss doing nothing all day again...
I know racism knows no borders, but I’m shocked that the actions of our country have sparked

protests all over the world. This is a global issue and I’m hoping this fire doesn’t fizzle.
It can be really hard living in a place without a significant Jewish community but I am so grateful to have found a community here no matter how big or small that always makes me feel at home
@nurse_doc
I legit had no photo and no time plus I was in the middle of moving and had no professional clothes handy so I borrowed my friends (way too small) blazer and random shirt and she took a picture of me with my phone in front of a white wall while wearing pajama bottoms.
Yesterday in lecture our professor used a graphic made by planned parenthood about gender identity and sexuality but had to make a very clear disclaimer to the class that they weren't making a political statement about planned parenthood they just liked the graphic...

I’m Celeste, I’ll be an M1 at Medical College of Wisconsin starting in August and so excited to be a student again!
I’m interested in EM or IM and Global Health work! I was most recently working for a nonprofit in Tijuana that served refugees and people experiencing homelessness.
