My review of
#ZackSnydersJusticeLeague
goes up tomorrow on
@joblocom
- I’ll admit I was wary of how it would be but my jaw was on the floor throughout. It’s terrific. Don’t consider it a director’s cut. It’s not. It’s an entirely new movie.
Hey
@OwenGleiberman
@Variety
- I get why you need to mention Affleck’s history in your review but saying that his own personal problems are “entertaining” or compelling to you is a gross way to review a film. It feels more like a review of his life than a film review.
@mattzollerseitz
The worst scene is when Freddie hooks up with a truck driver, played by Adam Lambert, and in the next scene is coughing in bed, as if this one hookup is what led to him getting AIDS. Such a ridiculous film.
@Jezebel
How does this get posted on Jezebel? Honestly. Are there no standards? I can only assume this is a joke. Clearly the writer has never actually watched a Brie Larson, Michael B Jordan, Amy Adams, Nic Cage movie. Some of the best actors we have.
@OwenGleiberman
I do save my outrage for things that are more important. But I’m allowed to criticize you if I disagree with you. That’s how you make your living, right?
@OwenGleiberman
This line in particular: “it’s easy to feel that Affleck’s ups and downs have added up to a more riveting movie than any film he has made since “Argo.” - do you not see how crass this is? He’s a real person with real problems, not tabloid cannon fodder.
#MissionImpossibleFallout
is one of those perfectly executed franchise films like THE DARK KNIGHT, FURY ROAD, SKYFALL, and THE WINTER SOLDIER. Textbook big-budget filmmaking, with an added edge thanks to the insane action direction and stunt work.
@TomCruise
is the best!
Spent the weekend in Tahoe interviewing the great
@TheJeffBridges
Jon Hamm and Dakota Johnson for the amazing looking BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE. Now at the top of my must-see list!
#ElRoyaleMovie
#JojoRabbit
is a pretty dazzling parable, an excellent family film, with its irreverence not distracting from the ultimate message about the thorough idiocy of hate- a message we would do well to remember. Loved it.
More unsettled by
#joker
than I thought I would be. It puts you in the mind of a psychopath for two hours and that’s not an easy place to be. To me, the high praise is warranted but many will be repelled. One thing no one can deny, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is incredible.
So it looks like Joker is another movie everyone’s gearing up to hate despite no one having actually seen it yet. Who cares if the leaked script isn’t good? That’s not the film.
@richardmz13
That’s the beauty of the film. The worm turns when you see Portman auditioning really young boys for his role. I also love that Haynes/ Portman show the actress she’s playing to be a hack and the movie they’re making to be trash
@LingoUnbound
Yeah no kidding eh? Drives me crazy people think he’s over the top in Flower Moon. Do they really think he isn’t delivering EXACTLY the performance Scorsese wanted? He’s doing an old-Hollywood Mouthpiece type lawyer, like the kind Scorsese grew up watching.
Very happy to say that I’m starting a new role
@joblocom
as managing editor. Thanks so much to my Beard & the Bald co-host for his mentorship, and
@The_JoBlo
himself! Looking forward to this new challenge!
My ten best
#TIFF2019
film are:
1. Waves
2. Marriage Story
3. Uncut Gems
4. Parasite
5. Joker
6. Knives Out
7. The Friend
8. Dolemite is My Name
9. Ford v Ferrari
10. Synchronic
@ReelTalker
The fact that he isn’t getting flooded with offers post May/December says it all, sadly. He all but steals the film from his more famous co-stars. He should be the hottest new actor in town.
@StephenKing
I just didn’t care for the way he painted Affleck’s addiction issues as “entertainment” because anyone that’s lived through it can tell you it’s not. But, also resent that my relatively measured criticism (of both him and
@variety
for running it) was seen as “outrage”.
Finally got to see Killers of the Flower Moon. I can't review it until Oct 13, but suffice to say only Scorsese can make a 3.5 hour movie and not only have you be cool with it, but also wish it was longer. A great adaptation of the book, and maybe DiCaprio's greatest performance.
#outlawking
(actually on-screen title is Outlaw/King) was a total blast. A worthy follow-up (of sorts) to Braveheart and a compelling epic in its own right. Also- Chris Pine does the full monty. People gasped.
@Lulamaybelle
I was 10 when this came out and this stupid kid cost me my chance to see Batman Returns in theaters. We were supposed to go see it at a birthday party but this kid coming to the party’s mom saw this and clutched her pearls. She was fine with us seeing Lethal Weapon 3.
Wow,
#PromisingYoungWoman
was a killer with an absolutely shocking third act that’s the gutsiest thing I’ve seen in awhile. Definitely NOT a simple revenge fantasy. Not at all.
After watching The Irishman, Marriage Story, The King and Dolemite is My Name, the argument that “Netflix doesn’t make real movies” is increasingly ludicrous. I think all four will make my yearly top 10, and wind up on most critics lists. No other studio can say that.
“Working” hard in Tahoe. Having a few drinks, met up with Drew Goddard, and did a bit of gambling. Wesley Snipes’s Passenger 57 advice to always bet on black served me well.
#ElRoyaleMovie
Our own
@cbumbray
is spending a few days in Lake Tahoe to talk to the cast and crew of
@ElRoyaleMovie
Here he is with writer/director Drew Goddard during a little mixer. Maybe not such a “bad” time after all, eh? Look for our interviews and coverage soon!
#ElRoyaleMovie
So I actually read a review today that complained about Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen and Tony Jaa speaking to each other in “stilted” English in Triple Threat. No shit - Uwais is Indonesian, Chen is Chinese, Jaa is Thai- that would be the language they’d have in common.
Man - I want
@ManMadeMoon
to make another movie. I miss him. Such a good director. People dumped on Mute - I was one of them sadly - but it’s actually a pretty good movie. Not sure what I was on when I reviewed it. Rudd is so amazing in it. I was too damn cynical.
Really disliked Dear Evan Hansen. It was well intentioned but also seems hopelessly naive and tone deaf. Ben Platt in undeniably a talent but also undeniably too old to convincingly play a teen. But, there’s a lot more about this film to dislike. A LOT.
Is there anyone actually not enthusiastic about Robert Pattinson putting on the cape? Watch Good Time, Lost City of Z, Damsel and High Life. Dude has CHOPS. He’s going to be perfect.
This week's Best Movie You Never Saw. Fun fact - I interviewed Christopher Walken years ago. As delightful as you'd hope. He walked into the room I was in to get some tea. He stopped in from of the tea table and said, "Hey...this tea...I mean WOW...there's so many tea BAGS."
The Wonder Woman 1984 hate is ridiculous. At worst it was mildly disappointing. Now people are going nuts like Patty Jenkins personally slapped them in the face. Chill out folks. It’s. Just. A. Movie.
Today would have been Anthony Bourdain’s birthday. I think one of the most inspiring things for me about him is his success came in middle age. As I approach 40 it’s nice to think the best days in my career could be ahead of me.
#ThankYouTony
If you're one of those lucky people that has
#YouWereNeverReallyHere
opening up in their city this weekend, make it a must-see. For me, the best film I've seen not just this year, but maybe in the last couple of years.
I actually think Robert Pattinson would be a great choice for Batman. Has an edge to him but also the good looks. Check him out in Good Time if you’re not convinced.
@MegJamesLAT
@AmyKinLA
It does sound like his team was exploiting him a bit - as if everyone involved wanted to keep the gravy train rolling and didn’t focus on what’s best for him.
Still thinking about
#TheKing
- one of the best movies of the year for sure. A pretty major accomplishment for Netflix in what’s turning out to be an extremely strong year for them. Chalamet is sensational. Going to be amazing in Dune. Also my cat identified with him strongly.
Well
@arcticninjapaul
- you were right - had a blast with
#Aquaman
- family audiences really have three super fun choices out there this weekend between this, Bumblebee and Spider Man Into the Spider-Verse.
Our Editor-in-Chief
@cbumbray
had a terrific interview with
@DonJohnson
this week. Can’t wait for you all to see it. A true icon and a super nice guy to boot. Some amazing stories. One of our best chats in awhile.
Enjoyed
#venom
- extremely silly with Tom Hardy’s performance being like Marlon Brando circa Streetcar mixed with Jerry Lewis, but that actually made me like it more as did the eighties defiantly goofy vibe.
Here it is - my review of the best movie I saw at Sundance, which is so good I think it's one of the best films of the decade-
#YouWereNeverReallyHere
w/ Joaquin Phoenix directed by Lynne Ramsay.
@katerbland
@PhilNobileJr
I wonder if anyone complaining about Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles on the Sight and Sound list will ever actually watch it.
Blown away by
#CharmCityKings
- outstanding acting and direction. Angel Manuel Soto should direct the next Fast & Furious - heck they should folk
@MeekMill
into that universe - would be amazing. Seriously - this was a kick ass movie. Review on
@joblocom
to follow soon.
Another amazing movie on
@disneyplus
is The Rocketeer, which is a thrilling, Indiana Jones style superhero movie set in WW2 with a top notch bad guy turn by Timothy Dalton. Great score by James Horner. Won Joe Johnson the job directing the first Captain America.
Why is it that movies, all of a sudden, have no physical affection whatsoever. In Quantumania Ant Man & Wasp are supposed to be in love, but they never even give each other a pec. Plus that CGI kiss in You People. Are we that puritanical? Thank God for TV at least.
After Coronavirus has passed, I never want to hear anyone say cashiers don’t deserve to make a decent, living wage. $15 an hour should be a baseline here in Quebec. It’s not the hedge fund managers who are still going into work every day keeping the grocery stores open.
@arcticninjapaul
I think the focus is too family friendly. They need to goose it up a bit. Use more of the Touchstone archive. They could just do what Netflix does - separate profiles for family/adult.
My grandfather is one of the last survivors of D-Day. Ninety-four years old but he tells me he still remembers it like it was yesterday. Not the type of thing one forgets.
June 6th, 1944 - D-Day - Never forget the brave men who jumped from the sky and stormed from the beach to do what was right. My eternal honor and gratitude for those who came before me and left an impact on history that changed the world for the better.
#DDay75years
You cannot possibly call
#TheSuicideSquad
a flop. First, we’re in a pandemic. Second, the movie is streaming for FREE on HBO Max. Impossible to judge what’s a flop by that metric.
#TheCreator
is really bold, vivid sci-fi. While some of the dialog in clunky, John David Washington is a kick-ass hero, and Allison Janney is brilliantly cast against type. Wonderful aesthetic. Hope it’s a hit. We need more original sci-fi.
So
#Deadpool2
just screened all over for fans - my
@joblocom
review will be up when embargo breaks but fans of the first will not be disappointed - at all. Brolin owns as Cable.
Officially on my way to Toronto for my eleventh year covering
#TIFF
- I was such a kid when I started. I’m really lucky - it’s been a journey with
@joblocom
that’s for sure. Thanks for the continued confidence
@arcticninjapaul
Whenever anyone asks me why I hang on to my DVDs, I say simply, Cocoon.
@mikeryan
wrote about how it vanished 3 years ago. It’s still not available (but the sequel is).
"You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film. We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple."
Ridley Scott is a bloody legend.
Back in theaters for the first time in close to a year (went to Tenet/New Mutants in August). Very surreal. Things aren’t quite back to normal here in MTL yet.
