'Film Studies' was full & oversubscribed at high school, until a student dropped out. All of the names of possible replacements were put in a hat and a random passer by pulled my name. My score in that class saved my transcript and allowed me to go to college!
My professional goal this year will be to find ways in which to make my
#PhysEd
classes more meaningful. I created this to sit above my desk as a daily 'nudge' to remind me to find ways to ensure each feature of meaningful PE is present in my lesson planning.
@glaad
My
#pronoun
buttons arrived this week. Not quite sure how I’ll distribute them but they’ll be great to promote a healthy discussion in my classroom.
I asked students to share any apps that they use on their phone to promote health. One student shared her 'self-care' folder with me. Can I just give her an A now?
This is my post-surgery face.
Repairing a torn right Achilles’ tendon.
I won’t be tweeting much this week, but your positive vibes and messages will definitely help me feel better. ♥️
This is the
#MeaningfulPE
document that sits above my desk. I added an extra box to list additional features being discussed in meaningful
#PhysEd
conversations.
Here's my recent blog post on how these features are shaping my instruction this semester.
Wondering if
#HealthEd
friends who grew up watching Friends on tv might like this shirt design. Currently a one of a kind that I had specially printed.

I love telling students that I’m trying out a new lesson idea and that they can stop me at any time with feedback. Brainstorming a lesson on intersecting identities and how they impact the lens through which we see health.
Pro tip: If a student tells you that another teacher did something really awesome in class.....tell that teacher that you heard that they were doing something really awesome in class!
Working remotely from home, it's tough to know if your efforts are noticed or appreciated.
Do your Zoom calls need sound effects? Crickets when no one answers a question? Applause for a correct answer? Check out my , search & save sounds and add the page to your Home Screen.

I just added links to my two 'choice boards' to this blog post. These have been VERY well received by my students, are great as an asynchronous opportunity, and can be used over and over again. Download them for free here:

What a night! Beyond honored to present on the
#TEDx
stage at

@MrsMilneBiology
and
@ScottAmpersand
could be my support crew!
Looking forward to the official photos but proud to share these few from tonight.
This is what teaching is all about. When on your 50th birthday you get messages from across the Atlantic from a teacher friend who you’ve known for 22 years and he’s tracked down students you taught as 11 year olds and are now grown men.
Feeling very appreciated!
I'm guessing that teachers who spent the first 3/4's of the year motivating students with grades....are having a harder time right now than those teachers who spent the first 3/4's of the year instilling a love of the subject matter.
@TeachMrReed
I send mine on a ‘walk and talk’. Set them a question, pair up and let them discuss while walking a pre-arranged route. That allows me to re-set the environment...and my mood. Works every time!
Please don’t make your Ss analyze Thanksgiving foods, do an eat this not that activity, or look at calories consumed. If they’ve got a full plate, & are joined by family, that’s all they need. Holiday food is experiential. It’s who you’re with & where you’re at that’s important.
Just thinking out loud.
Looking to find ways to make it easier for students to write deeper, more effective goal statements in

Happy to hear any feedback.
Alas surgery one wasn't as successful as hoped. Back in today for a second surgery. Remaining patient and humble but this is proving to be quite the test. I'll happily accept all positive vibes sent my way.
My new apartment is in a renovated elementary school. Mine is in what used to be the gym, and the original basketball hoop is in the living room. Still waiting for my movers to arrive and unload my stuff, but maybe I should just leave it empty and host some games 🤔?

I check-in (and out) with my students frequently throughout the week. It looks like this, with each check-in including a different, silly, conversation prompt. Here are some examples. What can you add to this thread?
Looking for advice, and good luck vibes.
Tomorrow I return to school for the first time since the end of January following two Achilles heel surgeries.
A little nervous. Physically not really ready, but the return will be good for me mentally.

tip: every year I go to the Dollar Store and buy 30 cheap kites, throw them in the trunk of my car and wait. On a windy day I call an audible, and we get the kites out. There’s so much joy when teens successfully fly their kites, often for the 1st time.

I challenged my 17/18 year olds to catch a falling leaf. Giggles & cheers. Memorable experience.

The

community have adapted this idea to include links to workout videos and other online resources with THIS being the best example I could find, and oh my goodness doesn't it look awesome!

Because I am mandated to make students take the PACER test, AND because I don’t ask students to do anything that I’m not prepared to do….I will be running alongside my students tomorrow.
Please wish me, my reconstructed ankle and 50 year old knees good luck.
Incorporating movement in the classroom increases student focus and makes the classroom more social, more memorable and more interactive. Consider sharing this great blog post with your co-workers. More Movement in the Classroom

Day 1 of sexuality education today and I tried this activity.
I appreciate that some of my peers couldn’t do this with their students, but my class were awesome!
A great start to the

quarter.

Put each student in their own breakout room so that they can work asynchronously and still call on you for help.
My 8 year old taught me that.

I have collated some of my favorite resources pertinent to our subject.

Of course there's no 'correct' answer, but this friendship qualities bracket led to a good discussion today in
#HealthEd
class.
The most frequently chosen quality was: LOYALTY.
Printed back-to-back on cardstock, and connected with a keyring loop, I can use back-pocket questions as exit tickets or post them on our LMS and have students answer them as homework reflections.

Due to the requests, I made a poster-friendly pdf copy of this

document and embedded the download link into my latest blog post.
It's a personal work-in-progress, and my daily nudge to include
@meaningfulPE
features in my
#PhysEd
delivery.
Today, all students received a short message from the administration addressing events in Kenosha. Teachers then led discussions guided by question prompts.
We can not shy away from conversations about race, and this was a great way to show all of our students that we care.
While students are waiting to join your Zoom, display relevant information and share a student selected song.
So many great ideas in this post!

Sometimes education posts on social media seems like this to me.
Twitter: Here, I’ve done all the work, created some great resources, and here they are. Use them.
Facebook: I have done no work, please give me your resources.
How do we start next school year remotely and yet get to know our students?
THIS is an activity that I highly recommend and it can be done remotely and still achieve powerful results. You'll want to share this with your teaching peers.

I’ll even pre-pay the postage for you if you promise to send it to your administrator thanking them for sending you.
Creating a "Brain & Exercise" choice board for my
#PhysEd
students. Resources to read, watch, and listen to.
I'll share the live interactive version within the next day or so once I've trialed it.
I ask my students for anonymous feedback at the end of the semester. I included: What was Mr Milne's overall message, what did he want you to takeaway from your time in
#healthed
class?
I'm happy with the results.
I’m creating a series of ‘Back Pocket Questions’ that I can ask my
#PhysEd
students based on
#meaningfulpe
features. Here’s a sneak peek of some bonus questions. Look out for the next
#slowchathealth
blog post.
Big shout out to the student who reminded me to give the class movement breaks today.
And shout out to the student who moderated a breakout room like an absolute champion.
Feedback from my students makes me a better teacher. Every time.
Who needs a 'Gratitude Choice Board'?
Articles, meditation, music playlist, origami activity, some TED's, videos and a podcast. Please share.
I just added it to the folder referenced here:
I asked my students to write a health-themed haiku.
Which

from these 18 do you like most?
I promised I'd select a favorite for a prize - can you help me choose?
Creating a Dimensions of Wellness activity. 6 cards of various levels of wellness per dimension. Randomly dealt one card for each dimension. Make conclusions about strengths/weaknesses, areas for improvement. Research school/local opportunities to improve one or more dimension.
