I’m sharing resources on how you can incorporate Black writers into your curriculum. I use slides like these as our weekly bellringers in AP Lit and in English II. Starting off with Black Joy and resistance from Lucille Clifton 💛

I found out about a friend’s death during school one day. I stepped outside my class to take a phone call & I lost it. Every student who passed me, even the ones I don’t know, hugged me. My biggest ‘problem’ child gave me a pep talk about strength & made me take deep breaths. +

+ From that day forward, I’ve shifted my winter activities to be truly inclusive of all students. The student from 2019 was in my class again last year. At the end of our last class together, he gave me a big hug and said, “Thank you for listening to me.” +

I will quit my job and this profession before I stop telling the truth to students. I will no longer be a teacher if it means that I have to lie about what I know is right.

Black children do not need to be ‘excellent’ to be treated like children. They do not need to be ‘excellent’ to be treated with dignity, respect, and humanity. Allowing Black children to fail and fall with lovingkindness and grace because they’re children is excellence.

I, an English teacher with 2.5 degrees, would not be allowed in this teacher’s class.

Teachers: If even one student in your class is masking, it would probably mean so much to them if you wore a mask too. It’s a tiny way to make a huge impact for a child right now.

The last 3 years have sucked the air out of teaching. It’s always been hard, but there is no room to dream, or breathe, or heal. I used to see my job as a space of limitless possibility and now it feels like my best, most creative and liberatory work is behind me. It sucks.

School and district leaders: Teachers do not need to hear “you got this!” We need to hear “when you do not have this, here are tangible ways we will support you.” Put that in your convocation speeches and then do it.

I’m so uncomfortable with the way some teachers talk about students as if they’re not literal children.

Children who watched their friends die should not have to testify about it in front of Congress.
