Even if #Ethiopia fails to formally recognize #Somaliland , the status quo of independence from #Mogadisho has been strengthened. If Addis Ababa does recognize Somaliland, there is little doubt that certain other states will follow suit and recognize realities on the ground.

#Somaliland 's independence is not declaratory, it's been a fact for over 30 years. The world (including the #US ) must wake up. Continuing to pursue a "One #Somalia " policy is nonsensical and self-defeating for Somalia, Somaliland and the region.

#China will reduce investments in #Africa by 1/3 in 3 years. It's already happening in #Kenya where #Japan has overtaken China as #Nairobi 's top bilateral lender. This will have big implications for #EastAfrica and Kenya's #SGR will remain incomplete.

The #ICJ 's ruling changes nothing "on the ground" until external interests ( #Soma oil and gas, #Norway and other ne'er-do-wells) get involved. Expect #Kenya to purchase more naval and coast guard vessels, and keep an eye on #Qatari and #Italian interests in the disputed blocks.
